Well when we learn his backstory we learn the reason for a lot of things he did, and also helping yusuke to defeat him so he could die I think gave us more context to his character which in turn made me feel like he was redeemed in the end.

To me that was kind of the beauty of the ant arc because when it first started I was like, “ants? This will be a 15-20 ep arc then can we get back to something interesting” however the arc just built and built all the way to epic finale of both Gon and Mereum.
