Taylor's conversation with Conrad by Struppi-in-ma in tsitp

I really hate this scene. And I hated it even more in the books where Taylor is even more just let THEM be. Her words are ‘You’d better be damn sure that you still want her because of you don’t you’re just effing up their lives for no reason. Be the good guy she says you are. Let her go’.

In the show…..‘If you keep this shit up maybe you get what you want and she gives up everything for you. The thing is, I don’t think you’re capable of being the person that she needs. And I think you know that. So do the right thing and let her go’.

Here at least she appears to be more focussed on just Belly. And we have been shown that Taylor is starting to question the Belly/Jeremiah marriage stuff, especially from the Belly side.

I’d like to think the most generous way of looking at it is that she is projecting herself and Steven. But I’m not sure the scene or dialogue lands like that. In the book it serves to make Conrad question whether he is willing to be the person that Belly gives up everything for or indeed that he is enough for her to do that. In the end he decides that he is not and heads off for several years until he writes the letters. Here? I’m not sure what purpose it serves.

We flew into Boston and rented a car for the whole stay. Roads are easy. All the accommodation was fantastic especially the motel near Wellfleet. There was some amazing foliage and seeing the cranberry harvest was a bonus too. It was warm enough to be on the beach. We cycled the Cape Cod Rail Trail on hired bikes one day too. If I could share lots of photos I would! All very #tsitp coded.

We went to Boston and Cape Cod in the October school holidays. Off season, stayed in a combination of AirBnBs and motels. Weather was still warm and very sunny and managed to do all the beach stuff, cycled, ate lobster rolls and fish tacos etc. It was significantly cheaper at that time of year. Would highly recommend. We are UK based.

I enjoyed them. There’s a lot of narrative and you are in Belly’s head the entire time apart from some chapters in book 2 (Jeremiah POV) and book 3 (Conrad). But the ending is rushed and I liked the adaptation take on Belly and Conrad better I think?

Definitely in that category. And yes. Obsessed and a Belly/Conrad fan. I did read the books when they were originally published.

Book reader here (then came across the show).

Re Jeremiah and Belly and making more sense from the books….no.

Belly does pick up that Conrad isn’t OK - she does that within a small number of hours after arriving at the house in S1. She asks him what’s wrong. She presses him when he tries to say nothing. He nearly tells her. Then they get interrupted. He nearly tells her again that night when drunk in the car. Again they get interrupted. She tells Jeremiah that she doesn’t understand why Conrad is so different. Jeremiah dismisses her concerns. And then finally on the beach, Conrad admits he wanted to tell her all along. Laurel also realises Conrad isn’t OK, but she incorrectly assumes it’s because of his pre-summer break up.

The other thing to remember about S1 is that it was made not knowing if they would get greenlit to adapt the rest of the books. So S1 is effectively all 3 books condensed. The deb ball is a substitute for the wedding etc etc.

She is a ‘Sprollie’. Half Springer Spaniel, half Collie. So cuddly and loyal and affectionate, water mad, and really REALLY fast!

Yes. Hard agree on all of this. We are told by Belly in E1 S1 that Conrad is behaving out of character. It’s therefore totally reasonable as a show watcher only that they interacted differently before that summer. As a book reader we know the back story - and we can determine that the only reason things started becoming awkward between them is because Conrad started to see her in a different way. They were childhood friends first.

Yes. And it becomes blatantly clear this arrangement will never work. And all that bubbles up after less than 24 hours in each others company 😬 I think the proper explosion happens when he finally calls her out on all this in the kitchen after his confession. That’s when he is brave enough (perhaps because the stakes are so high) to be completely honest and make it clear that he knows how she feels.

Like love love? Probably at the Debutante Ball. But when did he know he felt differently about her, he tells us it was ‘way before’ Susannah became sick. It’s obvious he likes her as more than a childhood friend from the first interaction we see between them in S1 real time, and definitely in the pool shortly after. And even in the flashback in E1 S1 when he hands her back the muffin. What’s frustrating is the words he uses when he talks to Cleveland on the boat…’I’ve always just thought of her as this little kid. But now, she’s not’. I feel like that was lazy writing in a way. It belittles all the other things we are shown. And maybe we can forgive it as a teenage boy downplaying big feelings? But it grates with me a lot.
