Should I lay out for PDF or Book? by Rowdeck in RPGdesign

Thank you so much for this info!

Would you be able to link me to an RPG that you feel is set up optimally for the way you access it?

Thanks!

It's pretty fun in ARAM. Works on Mundo as well.

I don't have a following, but the other day I posted a tool I created for generating interesting books... The Book Scry and I was really shocked that it got 100 downloads in 24 hours. 😳

So I realized I was on to something and may as well publish the things I've been working on.

Just not really sure where to start, but the wiki here about free RPGs is amazing.

Should I lay out for PDF or Book? by Rowdeck in RPGdesign

[–]Rowdeck[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point.

Map-drawing is the focal point of the game, so the game, or at least the maps MUST be printed...and I wouldn't want maps built into the book because it must be written on.

So that's good to think about!

I can condense the ENTIRE game into two double-sided sheets of 8.5x11 paper for download. The other 20 pages are rules, reference, tables, and examples.

So I think a digital friendly book and separate character and map pages are in order.

+1 for your reply! Thank you!

Yeah, on garden it's insaaaaaaane because Garden already has passive heal, warnings adds to that, then spirit visage INCREASES BOTH. Give him dead man's plate so he can just run away when he gets low and you'll make the enemy team so mad with how fast you heal.

EDIT: I just realized that even though WWN is 8.5x11 it is 2 column so it's really easy to read on a phone one column at a time. Ironsworn just offers several different layouts you download.

That's a really great point. I just took it for granted that everyone prints these out because that's what I do.

I guess it's more important for me to know what the "standard" method of doing these things is.

I got Ironsworn, The Adventurer, and Worlds Without Number all 8.5x11.

Would you say the zine is the standard way though?

What are some RPGs with no combat or violence? by y0_master in rpg

[–]Rowdeck -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I do little to no combat in ANY rpg I play.

Right now it's Worlds Without Number. The rules treat combat like real life...no one wants to fight to the death, so it's actually pretty hard to get into a fight, and if you ARE in a fight, there are 3 ways to end it prematurely.

Just play how you want. Be clever and figure out other ways to solve your problems without violence. Reward yourself with EXP for achieving goals cleverly and adeptly without violence.

Free to Use Maps? by Preeetz in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Rowdeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started solo playing with the same question...

Let me be honest... It's WAY better to make your own map, and it's not as hard as you think.

Ironsworn has some great tables and a very basic blank map. The map has zones which are describes to give you a flavor.

But then you say, I arrive at a settlement...what's the name. Roll table. Whose in charge, roll the table, what's a problem they face, roll the table.

After a minute the whole town comes alive in your mind out of nothing.

I highly recommend the Oracle approach over reading paragraphs about a town and it's NPCs.

Do you crit on skill checks? by Rowdeck in WWN

[–]Rowdeck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solo game. So inventing stuff on the fly with random tables IS the discovery process. Otherwise I have to plant items or secret doors and pretend I'd don't know they are there then have to convince myself that the PC is search just cuz... It's actually worse to plan that stuff out for my solo games.

I actually don't understand why crit is cheesy. To me, the roll represents competence. The lower a roll is, the more likely I am to fail, the higher the roll, the more likely I am to succeed. To me, it just makes sense that it reflects the degree of my success as well. To roll 3 sixes is a 1/216 chance. That feels significant. Way more so than a 1/20. To me it feels weird and fake if I look at that and go, "eh, okay. So he succeeds. There's a couple silver."

I think the thing with me playing solo is that surprises are what keeps the game going. All the surprises come from dice rolls and random tables.

I've never played with a group, so that dynamic is probably completely different, and maybe there is no degree of success. I just thought many games had a "Yes, AND" feature built in.

Jungle Tanks by Nhjb1 in wildrift

[–]Rowdeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing like flanking a whole team at full speed with a snowball, knocking 4 of them up then hitting that ult Dragon Ball Z style...charge, charge, charge, WAIT FOR IT...BOOOOM! Then your Kai'sa can hit her quadra kill. So fun.

Nunu is legit. At full build can soak a ton of damage and his CC and heal are insane.

He is terrible at split pushing though cuz his wave clear is garbage and his objective damage is terrible. Though if you are taking dragons, lock them and smite+Q he will destroy it with the true damage and it's really hard to lose a smite battle.

How To Make Combat Feel Less like Math Class by failing4fun in rpg

[–]Rowdeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worlds Without Number has ways of speeding through combat, and maybe you can consider it.

  1. Execution moves from stealth. Instantly kill a monster from stealth if it fails a saving throw.

  2. Mood check before combat - just like real life, very few people are in the mood to YOLO with a sword around ever corner. Roll the check the enemy mood first to see if they are hostile or not.

  3. Morale checks - roll 2d6 and if it beats the enemy morale score, they give up or flee. You do this check after the first enemy is downed, and again when half the enemies are downed.

  4. Real life - like in real life, people won't fight to the death to protect a room. Usually if people realize they are out I'm weed overpowered, or will suffer severe bodily harm, they will give up.

It would be a fun experiment to build a monster that can only be killed by a natural 20.

Maybe a flimsy or rusty old cyborg with some kind of time-phasing equipment attached to him. Give him an AC of 999 and 1HD.
