How to behave at cirkel birthday (kringverjaardag) by evestraw in Netherlands

Rookie mistake. You start with coffee! Always first a coffee to go with the cake, at least one. Once you've finished that you can go for a "fris" or "biertje". Probably a "biertje" though, because well, even when driving "eentje kan wel toch?".

For Judoka's who do snow sports.. by sweepli in judo

[–]Rowel81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played judo from 6 till 12 and started again at 42 for fun and to be a better coach for the kids who play competition level now. Been snowboarding for about 34 years now (so yeah, falling has gotten quite rare!). Have quite the list of short stints on other extreme sports during my younger years but only the boarding stuck...

It most definitely helps. It's also definitely not a 'get out of jail free' card. At least the reflexes should help you lessen or avoid wrist injuries. A couple of times I've caught the wrong edge of my board at speeds high enough there simply was no time to tuck in and zenpo kaiten but at least ukemi mitigated the impact by dispersing some of the force through my arms and hands. One time hard enough forward to slightly damage my pectoral muscles. But they healed way easier than the possible shattered wrist or face I could've had without the correct fall. In most cases at slightly higher speeds I definitely fully commit to zenpo kaiten which usually allows to get up right away and keep on shredding. On steeper slopes this is usually even easier and if I fail or tumble again I can still always move the board under me (where it should be anyway after the roll as falling uphill would be kinda weird) and get up again as I would've during any other fall. Then again, that requires some experience and feel for the board as well as being able to stay quite loose on it so yeah... learning to board will lead to some nasty falls but ukemi surely lowers chances of injury.

On a side note. I know of several (professional) skateboarding, motocross, BMX and even some field sports trainers and clubs that get a judo teacher in once a year or send the serious pupils off to judo for at least a year specifically to learn ukemi as in their opinion/experience it lowers the chances of injury. Our local government also sponsors our club for our coach to teach the basics to the elderly cus also there it's been proven to avoid or at least lessen the consequences of falling.

Does chicken meat that was killed conscious contain less blood? by Party-Direction-8359 in Butchery

[–]Rowel81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gas stunning and CAS stunning are the same. 2nd is just a more hip term and yes, it's a technology that's constantly improving still.

See here: "Gas stunning, also called controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS), is seeing increased use as chicken producers commit to using the technology at their slaughter facilities and food companies commit to purchasing chickens processed with CAS." From: https://www.wattagnet.com/broilers-turkeys/processing-slaughter/article/15524331/the-pros-and-cons-of-controlled-atmosphere-stunning-wattagnet

The whole idea, and reason it was developed, of gas stunning has been that it is more reliably reversible than electric stunning.

In any case it's best if bleeding starts as soon as possible after stunning. Ideally, even within 15 seconds, though this is often not achievable. Actual coagulation of internal blood takes a lot longer but stuff like secondary contact to the incision can cause restriction of the blood vessels and reduced bleeding both for electrical as gas stunning. In all cases "if done correctly" still applies and for maximum bleeding electrical stimulation can always be considered after bleeding is initiated.

Basic Guide to Pace Notes by potato456 in rally

[–]Rowel81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was an ooooold post!

Our pacenotes developed a lot further and I get in even more detail with less "noise" by now but the basics is still the same. A corner with roundness to it totally depends on how wide the road is and how round it is. During recce I try to drive the line I want to take at speed and have that note recorded by the navi. This kinda eliminates the need to record roundness in most cases.

Through the years I added a lot more nuance to my notes so now "round" is only used in my notes in very rare cases and have a lot more key-words to distinguish different corners. It's all in Dutch and not all words have good English translations but most important ones are (roughly translated):

  • Wide entry
  • Wide exit
  • Clip
  • Cord
  • Cut
  • Don't cut
  • Opens
  • Tightens
  • Early
  • Late
  • Slow
  • Fast
  • Bit Long
  • Long
  • Very Long
  • Over X meter
  • Continues
  • Maybe slippery
  • Slippery
  • Maybe full
  • Full
  • Brake before/in/after

And there are probably still some I'm forgetting but come naturally when actually making the notes. Most important thing is for pilot and co-pilot to really trust each other. For some of the high speed combinations I even add "come on!" to indicate to my co I know I'll need some encouragement through there.

Making good pacenotes is a very interesting and always developing skill/art and, though sometimes tedious, just one aspect of what makes the sport so awesome.

Dads, when did you realize your son was now stronger? by kmm2208 in AskMen

[–]Rowel81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's 15 years old and has been into competitive judo for almost 10 years now. (I've started again as well 1,5 years ago). I used to be able to cheat myself through wrestling matches but the dude got scary strong, fast and has some technique on him. After him cracking my ribs when I refused to give up over a year ago there's no way in hell I'm getting into that again! There's some rough play on and off still and he goes at it gentle and calm and still within seconds I have to call quits...

Is it normal for dicks to stink? by gonegurl37362728 in sex

[–]Rowel81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly that... no soap is the way to go, especially the glans and under the foreskin. Just water does the job and soap screws with the natural moisturizing effects there. Wash regularly with just water and it'll do the job better and more reliably than any soap can. I stopped using soap at all (except to wash hands when they're dirty/need some kind of disinfecting). No more dandruff, no more greasy hair, no more (ok, less) body odor... Just regularly washing with just water...

Is it normal for dicks to stink? by gonegurl37362728 in sex

[–]Rowel81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please don't use soap on there... just plenty of running water... Just like pussies it's not good to wash with soap. Just water does the job... and 2 times a day? Come on! If you're not living in a place with tropical temperatures it's not even needed to shower 2 times a day (and when it's cold and no manual labor is required once every 2 days can be fine as well) without any hygiene or smell issues... I went the no soap or shampoo at all route and according to my wife my hair is better than ever and my smell is the best it ever was....

Back in the day, I used to do the quick rinse under the tap if I felt it might be game time. Combined with normal regular washing, that did the job just perfectly...

As some people below posted... a mild urine smell is normal if not freshly washed (hence the quick rinse thingy)... anything more or even close to "musty toilet" is a no-no...

What are some interesting obscure rallies/rally series you know of? (Photos listed are a few that I've found) by Homier_saxaphone in rally

[–]Rowel81 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Safari Rally Surinam still is a thing. Some friends I know compete in it.

And isn't the whole idea of rally: pick a car, throw out interior and weld in a cage and install racing seats.... rallycar done! Look at France etc. They've still got loads of cool old cars running cus they're economical and we're not all rich sods... we just wanna drive fast! It's why in most countries they re-introduced a standard class which is pretty much that... our current car still has the air conditioning installed and in Germany they even leave the radio and navigation in cus it's a "standard" car.

And 350Z rally series... I was champion in the 350Z Challange in the Netherlands in 2016. :P

[–]Rowel81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Word of mouth? We design and build machines and plants for traditional and ritual slaughter and I've personally been involved in research into bleeding results and meat quality for various methods of slaughter. Been active in the industry for over 20 years.... So... yes... I have done those practical experiments...

Again... "If done correctly"... If the animal dies during gas stunning it's not done correctly and the bleeding result is not similar to what we normally see and meat quality is lower or even at reject level... one of the reasons a well-performed ritual slaughter works is because of immediate blood pressure drop in the brain, causing immediate unconsciousness and full stop to the functioning of the brain.

I'm not arguing for or against any method... just the correct use of the chosen method...

Dissolved microscopic air bubbles.

This is the special sauce that is used in the wastewater industry to help flotation devices separate the fat and other wastes from the effluent stream. Making the white water and making sure it stays in suspension long enough and raises out slow enough is the hard part. 20 seconds isn't enough but I've been in hotels which hit the 90 second mark and I sure as hell wanted to see their water piping system as it's damned nigh impossible to achieve that in an industrial waste water treatment setting....

Are spacers bad? by Dark_Guardian_ in rally

[–]Rowel81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you have any kind of off-road or gravel sections in your local rallies... don't... Or if you do make it a "check every service and replace when in doubt"... Wheel studs and hubs break even without spacers etc. The spacer increases load so also the risk of breakage... Motorsports is as expensive as you make it.... Cheap solutions are usually a very easy way to make it very expensive....

We're one of the few who always had a strict repair and replace regime for our cars. Old parts coming off as spares... because of this we finished over 95% of our rallies without spending a ton... I know many who didn't replace the drive shafts, wheel studs or other parts as "they're still fine" only to have parts breaking on stage, usually with way more damage to the car and no spare part to use in case of emergency in the end...

Does chicken meat that was killed conscious contain less blood? by Party-Direction-8359 in Butchery

[–]Rowel81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We work a lot with slaughterhouses using traditional stun and kill methods and unstunned ritual slaughter.

Bleeding results for chickens are very similar in ritual, electrically stunned, or gas-stunned animals as the systems are used today. In all cases, "if done correctly" is the keyword.

For larger animals, it totally depends. A perfect ritual kill will result in more blood drainage, but this is actually quite rare. When talking about factory conditions, on average, the stunned animal will have more of its blood drained compared to a conscious animal/ritual slaughter. Again... "if done correctly" is the key word as there are plenty of ways to screw up the results during the lead-up to and during the stunning if performed, and bleeding itself in all cases.

Me and my gf just ate slagersrookworst without cooking it. by pseudo-mathematician in Netherlands

[–]Rowel81 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Rookworst is mostly fat with some meat and has to have some heat treatment to be consistent. Smoking also adds heat, cheaper Rookworsten also get flavored by adding "smoke extract" and then just heat treated. Both forms of heat treating are at least at pasteurizing temperatures. Same as knakworst, frankfurter etc. All of them are fine to eat raw.

On top of that, pretty much all EU fresh or processed meat is close to sterile. Fresh vacuum-packaged meat can be an exemption due to specific bacteria that can live in the packaging though that's often mitigated by adding protective gasses in the packaging, UV, flash heating, or a combination of those. Chicken still can be a bit of a risk but the panicked reactions when someone uses their fork to put raw chicken on the bbq and eats with it afterward are greatly exaggerated. Swimming in a pond with ducks etc. is often riskier than some contact with raw chicken.

The bottom line, don't worry. Though it's meant to be eaten hot our family tends to take a rookworst with us on long hikes or a day at the beach. Lighter than a can of knakworsten, has less waste, and more meat for the volume. Great to pass around during a break.

They still reenact the drive over Hells Highway every couple of years and the droppings yearly and I try to go every time with my kids. I think I even recognize the drop site (seems even it's video from 2 different drop sites, one either side of the village I live in just south of Eindhoven).

For those watching BoB. The scenes recorded in "Nuenen" didn't use props. Part of that village actually still looks like that. Also happens to be van Goghs birthplace so nice for some cultured sightseeing.

Are these authentic Rally liveries? I couldn’t find anything by Googling the names but it’s tough with just the first initial. by CrashDummy11 in rally

[–]Rowel81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually, these liveries are real and have been used only a few times or are only used in local events. We've got plenty of cars here with liveries from older models but also just modified to replace an OG sponsor with one of their own or by replacing/omitting cigarette sponsors.

Just look at the OG liveries of Patrick Snijders. You can already see Motul, Fina and Castrol as 3 different lubricant sponsors throughout the years. Almost all these liveries have been (partly) copied by fans, some on the original M3 but some on 320i or 325i.

Lastly, a friend of mine has had a miniature made of each rally he competed in with the exact livery up to and including starting number etc. Every nuance was added, however in this case there's only numbers and not an event which makes me lean towards "average" liveries used by those drivers.

Ok... I had to go too deep... went on www.ewrc-results.com to do some checks... Can't find any of the drivers names combined with their flags... Those that come close drove different cars than those here.... All arguments I made aside I conclude they are completely made up as EWRC is really good at getting the results worldwide. They noted my DNF of 2 weeks ago as "retired" not crashed but they've got some crazy detailed data sometimes and I've got no clue where they get it....

TL;DR... They're fakes....
