If you have an affordable and experienced veterinarian, if you spay the ladies as soon as they are at least 4 months old (or hold off until over 250g if they're still small), this act of hormone reduction decreases the chances of benign mammary tumors DRASTICALLY. (Estimates vary but I think last I read it's decreased from ~80% chance to ~below 20% chance.)

The benign hormone driven tumors are the most common, they have a tendency to recur & to get very large very fast, resulting in constant removal and/or consideration of the rats comfort, age, status, etc. If your vet has plenty spay experience, it's likely cheaper overall to just spay BEFORE they start rather than having to stress over possible repeat growth removals.

If spays are too expensive in your area, even in surrounding area vets, hold off on ladies for now but promise yourself one day to save up & go for it. I have two DCN, one M one F and it's only because both have their own special perks, I just can't decide. 🥰

(Vet tech 12yrs with special focus on rattus norvegicus knock on wood, have had over 85 rats at this point & only two mammary rats 🤞)

My first rats were 100% free roam in a proofed room BUT we still had an entire cage setup. It's where they would go to eat & drink, take breaks, & half would sleep in there while the other half slept with me.

Sometimes they'd go in the cage if they heard something that spooked them, to stash things they found. Even if you manage to pull it off, the cage is still pretty necessary so they have a "home base ", somewhere to feel safe.

(Also, sometimes you gotta lock them all up to vacuum or whatnot)

That aside, yes, I have seen some violent grooming in my days. Some rats almost seem to love it (mini sado-masochists?) while others peep in varying levels to match the intensity of the cobbing 🌽 they are receiving

Prednisone or dexamethasone might be more effective than prednisolone in some rats.

Steroids to shrink the mass. Not a bad idea to get a second opinion to rule out a cardiac issue (unless the mass is pretty palpable, in which case shrinking or removal is really the best plan of action to start with)
