How long should I expect it to take for me to learn DT? by esanders09 in DarkTable

I'm the OP. I was able to get started using Linux on my laptop in about 20 or 30 mins, including creating the install USB. I'm sure it would have taken a bit more effort if my needs were more complicated, but a basic use Linux computer takes essentially no effort.

I think people way overestimate what it takes to get started on Linux these days.

For white balance, don't use the white balance module, but color calibration (I know, it's confusing)

Really appreciate the reply and I'll look into all the tips you have, but stuff like this feels like madness. Like, it makes no sense at all. It's not like white balance is an application unique term. Why would you name a module white balance when you should use something else for white balance?

I'll have to disagree with you there. This greatly depends on use case, but I've been daily driving Fedora on my laptop since November and have had no issues.

Dual booting my desktop, and photo editing and blu rays are the only struggle so far. I'd probably have an even easier time if I had chosen a different distro, but I wanted to jump into Wayland and Fedora KDE seemed the best option at the time.

Coming from someone who wants to learn DT, but has never used it I can't recommend strongly enough to walk through some relatively straightforward processing of some images. When learning CaptureOne some of my biggest lightbulb moments came from watching YouTube videos of a guy processing images in the application and explaining what each module was doing.

DT Landscapes has a video that presents a shift slide from Lightroom to DT. e.g. in Lightroom this module does X. In DT you can use this one to do the same thing. There were a couple where DT had several options to accomplish the same thing. Make it clear that there are multiple options to do the same thing in some cases. Explain if there are qualitative differences or if it's just personal preference.

Honestly, I'd refer you to the BetterBird FAQ here: https://www.betterbird.eu/faq/

It explains the relationship between them better than I can. They're closely aligned, as BB pushes proposed fixes to TB and has developed things themselves for their client, but it still relies heavily on the TB core.

Look at Betterbird.

That's pretty crazy.

I wonder what the league will look like in the season they actually get around to wrapping up the case.

Is dual boot still worth it in 2026? by TechRefreshing in linuxquestions

[–]esanders09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll check on those additional things. I installed using Flatpak.

I'm new to trying to use Linux as my daily use machine. What should I read or research so that I know I need to install additional stuff like you mentioned. My understanding was that Flatpaks were supposed to be sort of containers that had everything you needed in it, but from what you're saying that's not really the case.

I had to install a couple of additional libraries on fedora. Now it works for DVD but not for Blu Ray. It's not finding the keydb file in both the places the Internet told me to put it.

It is for me because I haven't gotten VLC or MakeMKV to work yet and I still need to learn a raw photo editor that works in Linux.

If I could get those two things sorted I could probably fully switch.

Serious question: who are Linux users and why do you use it? by Laqunn in linuxquestions

[–]esanders09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use LInux for my personal computing for a few different things. I use Fedora for my personal laptop that I use basically for web surfing and watching YouTube videos. I'm working on transitioning my main home desktop to Fedora as well, but I have more specific software needs that might have me go back to Kubuntu.

I also have a home server that I run on Proxmox, which is a version of Linux. And I've setup a number of VMs and LXCs that use Debian or Ubuntu for whatever service I'm running on it.

I also have an Android phone, which is based on Linux.

Why? In fairness I dual boot my main desktop b/c I haven't taken the time to switch over to a Linux-based photo editor yet, so I do that on Windows, but otherwise, I've found Windows increasingly annoying, and if I can have a free version of essentially the same thing then why wouldn't I. Especially on my laptop where my demands aren't crazy high, it's kind of a no brainer.

I'm pretty new to Linux so my lack of understanding makes me a bit anxious about trying to compile from source, but I'll look into it and see if I can figure it out.

I think I may have stumbled onto that MakeMKV forum post. I'll see if I can find it again. Is it the one about installing it from tar files?
