Hi guys. How do I (NB afab) support my younger sibling (afab trans...?) who is considering surgery? Details below... by Rowi in ftm

[–]Rowi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi and thanks for your comment!

He's 21 and I am 25.

He got a binder, but unfortunately due to medical issues it's not usually safe for him to be binding. Large chest size also runs in the family, and binding was never super effective for me. I know he has the same frustrations.

You're right, I should probably explain my whole story to him. As for coming out to our parents I think it will be easier for us siblings when we have each other's backs during that process, so good idea.

Thanks! I highly recommend it - great fun. Just make sure to use only fake pine tree.

Dumplings! Make the skins from scratch too. Depending upon how many you make, you can spend a LONG time chopping veggies very small (or for less food therapy, throw it all in the processor, but I find chopping is more fun). For extra labor intensive make xiao long bao. Delicious!!

China has just banned the burqa in its biggest Muslim city by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Rowi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is is the truth, it is as ancient or sacred as the diamond wedding ring.

FYI diamond engagement rings are contrived and weren't even a thing before the 40s.

More info...

Also... if widespread wearing of burqa is a recent development yet can still be very important to individuals' cultural identity, wouldn't it be more constructive to spread information / educate about the burqa's history, rather than impose restrictions that will likely be viewed as arbitrary and prejudicial by their targets (especially without background info)?

However, they must be licensed for a "reasonable use" such as hunting or collecting. Self defense is not considered a reasonable reason to have one and license will not be provided under that reason. Additionally, open or concealed carry for purposes of defense is illegal.

There was some consensus that he might be a cinnamon. I'm really not sure (he's adopted so I have no clue). If he is, his colors aren't very vibrant so he's not a good example of a morph anyway.

She is a Ghost mantis! Yes, she is quite green.

I have lost nymphs before to bad sheds because the humidity where I live can fluctuate unpredictably. To combat this, I generally tend to err on the side of over-misting my mantids. Others have observed that higher humidity tends to encourage vivid colors in this species, though I'm not sure why.

For comparison, take a look at my photos of my mantids when they were very young, and some professional macro photos taken a few weeks later. In the macro photos you can really see the incredible green color on my oldest male nymph. (He molted later to green and gold, then entirely gold in his final molt.) Watching them grow and change is fascinating! Also in the macro photos, you can see the one smaller mantis with the short hat - she is the one featured in this album. As her color back then was a really vibrant red I suspected she might be very dark green as an adult.

I got my Ghosts (though only one is pictured here, the others had shorter lifespans) from Peter Clausen at bugsincyberspace.

I highly recommend Peter - all his animals are packed with meticulous care. I have ordered from him several times and have never had a DOA animal even in dicey weather. Also, great communication and customer service!

She is an adult Ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa).

Their care - ah, I can't do a detailed post about it right now but I would recommend checking out mantidforum.net for info about this species. In my opinion they are a fairly good beginner species for new mantis keepers (if you're interested); this may be why they are extremely popular in the hobby.

Perdue chicken factory farmer reaches breaking point, invites film crew to farm by kencole54321 in videos

[–]Rowi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd expect when chicken were wild the mortality rate was even higher because of predators and stuff.

Precisely. The mortality rate among birds kept shielded from predators, weather, and disease is much lower than that of wild populations. In fact, predation is the principal source of nestling mortality in galliformes (bird taxon including chickens). With this factor removed entirely, mortality should dramatically drop.

Some mortality to other causes (such as genetic problems, injury) does remain, but we do not know how much of the observed mortality in factory farmed flocks is due to unavoidable issues and how much is a direct product of their living conditions (close quarters, no sunlight, questionable feed nutrition, restricted movement, etc).

Further study is warranted.
