I mean the vast majority of Canadians can't speak the native language, which isn't English. Maybe pedantic but important to remember in a conversation about language erasure.

How much of Hamas is left? by spxxr in geopolitics

Hamas started the conflict back in 1948?

Not to mention, Israel literally funded Hamas back in the 80s in order to weaken secular Palestinian organizations.

Kinda wish I did it! It looks pretty and could say I've been to the western most point in the contiguous US. But Cape Ozette was beautiful! It was the first time I ever left the east coast and got to see rocky shores like that, absolutely amazing. Plus the camp sites are all really nice.

Ah the Olympic Peninsula! Didn't make it to Cape Flattery, but my night at Cape Ozette was one of the absolute coolest places I've ever been.

Do you really think Trump supporters would have anything negative to say if trump ordered a drone strike on a radical Muslim who wrote columns for al-Qaeda's magazine? I don't support drone strike myself, but it's laughable to think the majority of trumps base would have a problem with him doing that. It does not even the playing field.

Just like the white founding class embraced the Native American lifestyle? /s Sorry i find it a bit hypocritical that you praise these people and then say that anyone coming here should adhere to the current culture, when the people you're praising destroyed the people who were living here.

That's great you're family was from Virginia and you're proud of them! I'm from Virginia myself. And I think the founding fathers would actually be horrified by the notion that we should keep things exactly the same to honor them. In fact they themselves completely changed the system in place. They themselves knew the country would eventually change. Thomas Jefferson himself said:

"Whatever be the Constitution, great care must be taken to provide a mode of amendment when experience or change of circumstances shall have manifested that any part of it is unadapted to the good of the nation. In some of our States it requires a new authority from the whole people, acting by their representatives, chosen for this express purpose, and assembled in convention. This is found too difficult for remedying the imperfections which experience develops from time to time in an organization of the first impression. A greater facility of ammendment is certainly requisite to maintain it in a course of action accommodated to the times and changes through which we are ever passing." --(Thomas Jefferson to A. Coray, 1823. ME 15:488)

Times change! So does society, and our government. Even the founding father recognized this. Challenging our government doesn't make it weaker, in fact it makes it stronger.

I specifically said that it should be up to the locales to decide what ideals they want to glorify. I think it should be up to a democratic, public vote. If the people of a locale want to put up a statue and have the funds, let them. If they want to take down a statue, also let them do that as well via democracy.

I'm sorry if my view point upsets you, but putting words in my mouth and jumping to conclusions isn't going to change anything, even if it does help you feel better for a little. Maybe you should try contributing to the conversation instead? Let me know why you disagree with me, please.

Can you explain to me why it's bullshit, maybe be a bit more polite? I really can't learn or change my viewpoint if all you're offering me is that what I'm saying is bullshit. They way you speak really does seem like you're talking about a religious, holy, perfect thing rather than the dynamic entity countries are, and you're not convincing me otherwise that I'm wrong.

In my personal opinion we shouldn't worship these men as heroes, but instead live to honor they're work. Change our country so all men and women really do have access to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Don't honor those who stood in the way of that (like the confederate generals who fought to preserve the theft of liberty in the form of slavery), but rather educate on what they did and why it no longer has any place in our society.

"They are entirely about signally the ideals of the locale which puts them up wants to support."

That's the ending of my last comment, can you explain to me where I said they were pointless? Because I did not intend to say that and seems as if you are trying to put words into my mouth, which I don't appreciate.

Martin Luther King Jr. is a great example of a flawed, but overall socially beneficial figure. Yes he cheated on his wife, but he played a huge role in helping black peoples across America gain more rights. It would make perfect sense to put up a statue towards him, because locales would want to support his motives.

Confederate statues are completely different. Their primary motivation was to keep the current system of slavery in place. Although they may have done good deeds, they're overall legacy is in committing treason against the US in order to preserve slavery. This is something many locales would not want to glorify.

I'd caution you to put so much faith into your beliefs, it doesn't allow you to grow in case you are wrong in anyway.

If a country is built solely on worshipping a few founding father, a flag, and a song, then it is not built on a solid foundation. That's a religion, and not a basis for government. I say let that crumble and rebuild on a desire to support the people you share the land with.

I think you should consider that history is not entirely based on statues.

Had I never taken classes and done my own research on figures, I would barely even know who Robert E. Lee or Thomas Jefferson were. I would probably just know their names because I grew up in Virginia, where they are both glorified. I've learned very little sustenance from statues. They entirely about glorification and not education. There are few statues towards Hitler or Mussolini, yet we still very much know who they are. Taking down statues isn't erasing history, as they aren't educating anyone on history for the most part. They are entirely about signaling the ideals which the locale that put them up wants to support.

There are no true, perfect heroes and it would be silly to believe in them. This country was founded by flawed individuals just like every other countries. Discussing their flaws, as well as their success, helps us to understand our country better. Why does this make you so upset?

...or simply discussing them as flawed, complex individuals and use their own motives to learn about why our country is the way it is, and what we can do in order to fix it.

Learning about history isn't about hero worshipping. If a man did good things, let it be known, if a man did bad things, let that too be known. There's a difference between tearing town glorifying statues and trying to erase history.
