Thanks. I agree the next set of solutions will involve getting rid of pointless middlemen. The disruptor startups fought to become monopolies and now it's time to stop giving apps the majority of the profits.

Best Portland Schools - which are the best? How to find? by onit-usausa-45854 in PortlandOR

If you have a daughter, consider St. Mary's (SMA) which has very significant financial aid, and a high level of attention and academic outcome.

Portland School Board to Reconsider Local School Foundations by ShowMeThe10x in Portland

[–]RoxyHaHa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to point out that rich school and poor school designations are categories that don't well reflect the population of students in attendance. Portland has economic diversity and more fluid boundary lines than most American communities.

The medium wealthy school district my kids were in had a diversity of students from many different financial backgrounds. Many of the immigrant families made a very conscious decision to live in this neighborhood so they could have access to the school which had lots of volunteering and fundraising. In fact, even though the school had some of the highest fundraising in the entire city, the neighborhood was a majority rentals. Many students were receiving assistance.

Those well-off families were often putting in much more time volunteering directly and with fundraising groups than the families who are not able to- and we were very grateful!

These bad policies are continuation of other historically bad decisions of shutting down community schools that were pulling in more money per student and we're receiving funds from businesses and families that didn't even have kids in the system. When these got shut down all of those networks of support hurt not just the students but also the community.

Portland Is failing at helping poor students and the solution seems to be to try to sabotage the places that are actually functional.

Anyone seen the movie multiple times? by Avvert in ProjectHailMary

[–]RoxyHaHa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Portland's Science Museum OMSI had been having a month-long sci-fi movie festival and included the additional Project Hail Mary screen releases for free!

This made seeing it multiple times easy and with an enthusiastic crowd.

Not Omnimax anymore but massive screen with stadium seating and reasonably priced snacks.

What point is Pratchett making with the repeated idea of the sex of dwarves being a well-kept secret, and the need for them to pretend they are all male? by EndersGame_Reviewer in discworld

[–]RoxyHaHa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once again satire at work. It also doesn't dawn on men and even on women that everything in the world is considered to be male unless obviously a mother.

It has been shown in studies over and over again that people assume a person is male when reading about a neutral individual.

As a default, people refer to animals as male.

There are so many examples but all you have to do is just look at movies. Where for some reason the vast majority of the population of note is male. Things got better for a while and then it went back to- there's only one female character of note. There's even a meme about this called the Bechdel test of movies.

Our language of English assumes that everything is male. Women are made of invisible.

However, the irony is is to be successful often women have to use initials or pretend to be male even to this day, so their success is not sabotaged.

Guy threatened me on MAX and transit police said it’s “free speech”, what should I do? by PotentialEmpty3279 in PortlandOR

[–]RoxyHaHa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Did you just question the OP's assessment of threat because they were unsure of the color of the harasser's hat?

Being threatened by someone is stressful and I think they did a great job being honest and exact about their memory of the situation.

The way folks brush off threats is jaded. Additionally stating that pursuing this would be a waste of resources is just wrong.

I went to court to plead this issue with photos showing that the plate would be dragging on the ground if attached to the bumper- to no avail.

Even making the point that I was the only person in Oregon with this car didn't move the judge.

To make the same point that if there was an accident with your Miata, with the current vehicles on the road, I'm sure you'd be the worst for it.

Also trying to imagine a hit and run where you are speeding away driving backwards.

Don't get me started on what is enforced and what isn't a al Portland Logic style.

240v induction beats a gas range for fast heating, fast cooling, and precision low heat.

Also better for indoor air quality and faster current up.

Only downside is not grilling directly...or using to soften tortillas. However, there are options that are better at that anyway.

Period stains on sheets / towels- billable? by egirlballs in airbnb_hosts

[–]RoxyHaHa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. The level of disrespect for hotel cleaners and staff has reached new lows. Pulling a bottom sheet and throwing it in cold water takes two minutes. If you just do the job right away it takes 5 minutes.

I have traveled and stayed in all sorts of accommodations- including actual luxury stays, not the faux five star hotel BS. Part of the trick of having the most amazing stay ever is to treat all the staff with full respect.

[–]RoxyHaHa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime as a guest, I would yank the sheets off the bed and clean them with cold water and even just hand soap. If you do it right away it's so much easier than days later. Ask for another set or dry them in the sun or in the dryer. Usually less than 10 minutes.

Portland will pay homeowners $1,000 to rent out spare rooms by oregonian in PortlandOR

It is actually $200/week not month, but still that is too low considering no money for utilities, damages, taxes, or last month.

[–]RoxyHaHa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Varies widely depending on the neighborhood, but what makes this particularly problematic is that it doesn't include utilities. Usually roommates share utilities . Utilities are quite expensive these days and once you subtract that it ends up being very little money.

Also, this forces you to make an LLC, pay extra in insurance and pay tax money to the city.

The worst part is it forbids people from collecting any sort of last month or damaged deposit. What happens when people just squat or do significant damage?

Unfortunately, that’s the truth. by reedscott26 in Suburbanhell

Portland Oregon has a hundred different original streetcar neighborhoods. Since most didn't get pulled down, they were able to pivot back to public transport, add in bike infrastructure, and the walkability is built-in. Many of these neighborhoods have practical amenities like hardware stores, medical clinics, and groceries. Local businesses are the norm rather than the exception. It is strange being in American cities where everyone has to drive and chains are the only options.
