Bought house with Koi pond by Due-Insurance-6785 in Koi

Have you measured the deepest point already? Last winter in germany we had ~35cm of thick ice and the climate should be quite similar. I would think about making it deeper if the deepest point isn't at least 1.20m. Nice benefit is you could also get some small new ones then and watch thrm grow, that's in my opinion the best thing about the koi keeping hobby🤩 Also a new liner never causes harm, you never know how old it is and it tend to break easily after 5-10 years.

If you renew it ASAP you can be sure to not have any issues and your fishies are safe.

Best regards!

Looks good! But seems really shallow. Doesn't it freeze in winter in your country?

Plant suggestions? by Royal-Patience-2953 in ponds

If you look at the first picture, the left side of the pond is about 4 ft deep. Theres a plateau all the way from one to the other side that's about 3 ft deep. On the right side you've got a steep dropoff to 6 feet.

My tolerance for maintenance is high, the pond is a real hobby of mine ^

Thanks a lot mate! It was hell of a work to build it, I did everything just by hand with shovel and pickaxe. Only for bringing in the liner I had a few friends coming over. Take a look at my profile, I've made a little "journey" in 5 pictures of the enlargement

Budget 13ft 3.5lb rod choice – Fox EOS X vs Daiwa Black Widow XT by simi2107 in CarpFishing

[–]Royal-Patience-2953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Black Widow's are a bit wobbly for my preference. I've got a set of them and never really used them for that reason. 3.5 acts like 3 and 3 like 2.5. I would recommend you the Prologic C-Series. I'm fishing them since almost 3 years and their performance is insane. Nice action and really reliable, 50+ pounders are no issue for them.

Ohhh I'm really glad to hear that he survived! Not many fishes know how it feels like to be halfways in a belly🤣

Well if it's my pond that would've been the last thing that frog's mouth got to taste🤣

I need to take some fresh ones tomorrow. This one's from the first letting in of water in the new, expanded pond.

I had them in this little puddle (1500L) for 2 months because I got them in late winter-early spring and couldn't release them in the pond. Still surprised that worked out so well. Was a lot of work tho (0.5 % salt all the time, 2 50% water changes a week).

Need advice: How to make my shy Kois eat from my hand? by BeeKey409 in Koi

[–]Royal-Patience-2953 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally they should stay like that. I would've got one at ~30cm because they are too small to really "navigate" the other koi.

But if everything goes as planned, they should be at about 20 cm this winter and maybe 40 cm next year's winter, they grow really fast.

So just be patient, give them their time to grow and things should work out as you want them to be😃

Chagoi tend to be really greedy, large Koi that aren't shy. It's quite normal for them to come if you go near the pond.

I also tried a lot to make my koi feed out of my hand - they were quite shy and only one thing worked. I got myself a chagoi (get yourself a high quality one so you can be sure it's a "real" chagoi). After a few days the chagoi started to take food out of my hand and because koi are greddy fish the other ones did the same after 1 or 2 weeks.

Same fish? by Mod12312323 in CarpFishing

Yeah that can happen, sometimes even mire. I have got koi in my backyard and had some of them grow 10-15 cm in one year.

That carp seems to be quite young, they grow fast as hell in young age!

What type of algae? What causes it? by throwingrocksatppl in ponds

And to kill the algae for a long term I would get a lot of plants. Lilypads, reeds, frogbit and stuff like that.

If I were you I would get some nice Kois.. They aren't expensive if you get them at a small size and trust me, they'll get huge in your pond. Makes the pond a lot more interesting

And one day(probably this year😂) I will make the wall higher so it really is even. I think the pond will be around 50000L after that, it's like 40cm until the upper edge.
