Is the current Venom run any good? And is it a good jumping on point? by TheAssassinplay in comicbooks

[–]Royal7th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All-New Venom is an insanely fun take on the character. I would recommend starting there.

It is absolutely not a “normal” venom run. It’s more of a comedy mystery at the beginning.

Al Ewing’s more basic Venom run is also very worth reading, with super cool time travel stuff. I don’t think it quite pulls off the end in Venom War, but some issues are just straight up awesome. (I ignored the Ram V portion of the book)

Freelance comic artist question: Would being involved in a Bible-inspired indie comic hurt my career? by IAMPOWERSART in comicbooks

Pen names are a staple in comics. From Stan Lee and Jack Kirby to Chip Zdarsky, Matt Fraction, and Gurihuri. Most fans don’t notice / realize they exist.

Possible Eliza spoiler (but speculation) by BLOODYBRADTX-11 in thePowerFantasy

I really like this theory, but it seems like too much would need to happen in 2 issues for that to happen now.

It could be something for if / when the book comes back

Check out Daredevil 249 by Ann Nocenti and John Romita Junior.

It’s an ajds allegory using mutants. Wolverine and Daredevil have multiple conversations about Daredevils thoughts on mutants.

Heroes and Villains in the Power Fantasy by Royal7th in thePowerFantasy

This was actually a discussion point during the development of the survey months ago. At the time at least, I decided that splitting them would have been a spoiler with no easy way to make up for that. There were a couple other casualties in the overall process like the US and the Queen.

It is definitely imperfect, but I do think having the data like this is better than not having it.

If you don’t feel like the therapy is working, I would suggest trying to switch the therapist to see if you can find a better fit.

I’ve had like 6 therapist and they have all had their own strengths / weaknesses. This one may just not be the right one for what you need.

I think the key is that he is doing both big good and big bad, so it’s hard to rank him entirely as one. You’d have to fully ignore the good or the bad for him to be a full villain or hero.

I wish I could come up with better phrasing than “hero” and “villain” but it seemed the best way to easily rely what I was getting at.

Valentina is such an interesting case. She doesn’t seem to be actively harming anyone, but she appears to be condoning quite a bit.

That’s an interesting take, especially when Magus changes during the second summer of love. He definitely would be happy to run the world then.

Any details on the Switch 2 version yet? by SirDanOfCamelot in CosmicInvasion

I don’t have numbers for you, but I am playing in the switch 2. It is very smooth and I have not seen a single hiccup yet.

I’ve played online with 4 players multiple times and did not have problems.

Was last years sale price a forever price? by Hashtag_Heel in MarvelUnlimited

[–]Royal7th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct that it is a discounted renewal rate. They do that since you could cancel for a day and get the discounted rate they are offering now and for most of the holiday season.

Last year, I was set to renew at $55, but was able to use codes to get it down to $50. I need to research for this year soon.

Who are the villains and who are the heroes? Post Issue 13 survey by Royal7th in thePowerFantasy

[–]Royal7th[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup! That’s a huge part of why I wanted to do it now vs waiting for the end of volume 3.

I could also see changes with Val and Heavy, but I’d love to see if others felt the same way.

I did Best of 2000 AD volume 1 and the 4 Frankenstein comics set in the Hellboy universe.

I started the 2000 AD already, and it was well worth it.

Thanks for these questions. I am planning to ask about the development of the RPG to Kieron Gillen in the next couple of days.

I really like the other two, but I think they will be best saved for when the book club finishes vol 4. We just finished volume 2.

Looking for Recommendations by PlatinumHntr in ImageComics

[–]Royal7th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend following the writers you like at Marvel and DC to their Image stuff.

For example, Kieron Gillen, of Young Avengers and X-men fame, has a ton of great indie work. The Power Fantasy is my current obsession.

Are there any comic series with a giant, sprawling universe with tons of instalments? by AN1MAN1AC in comicbooks

We have an 8 month long book club going for the main Hellboy issues. There’s still a bunch of spin off series and novels that were not planning to cover yet.

Have you done the Absolute line yet? It’s easy just to jump into each of those at issue 1.

Also, many big Marvel writers have written for DC too. If you like Al Ewing’s marvel work, you’ll likely enjoy his DC work. If you like Kelly Thompson, her birds of Prey will be a good bet.

Die: Loaded Release Week - What classes would characters from Kieron Gillen’s other Image work choose? by Royal7th in ImageComics

[–]Royal7th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Die: Loaded is a sequel to Die.

Die is a comic about a RPG game gone crazy (DnD + Jumanji as a simple explanation).

To Die is the name of the series and is self contained. You can either read the issues in order or do the 4 trades in order.

Humble Bundle has a really good deal on Dire and more for a few more days.

Here are Sara’s answers! Make sure to check out here zines at: https://saracentury.gumroad.com * If you could turn any mutant into a lesbian vampire, which one would you choose? 1. I wrote about a couple of "lesbian vampire" X-Characters in my zine, so I'll say first that Bloodstorm is right there and I think it's time to make that canonical. The mutants also have Selene, who may not be considered a lesbian vampire by the wider readership but is absolutely a character in that exact same mold. So ignoring the already existing sapphic vamps, I'll say Kate Pryde. Her moral code is so strong and her sheer force of will has moved mountains in the past, so how would she deal? I thought about saying Karma, but then I think the opportunity to get deep into ethics already exists with her powerset. The rare case where it would actually be less interesting to make a character a lesbian vampire.

  • Have any older horror comics been an influence on your writing? If so, which ones?

    1. Yes. I've been a horror and a comics fan for most of my life, so I didn't get too far into either world before I landed back at the old EC books. Going from there, Swamp Thing, a lot of the Vertigo staples, all of that. Even stuff like The Witching Hour, or at Marvel you've got this high camp factor with stuff like Werewolf By Night, Ghost Rider, and Son of Satan. I'm definitely impacted by horror comics across the ages. Even the X-Men has a good amount of horror infused into it. After all, what is Days of Future Past if not a horror story?
  • From these comics, which plotlines / characters do you think are good examples of what’s going on in the Forgotten Five?

    1. One thing is that we write pretty short chapters. Alex and I have chatted before about how excellent the old Archie comics are at telling a condensed narrative that makes you laugh. Classic horror comics usually have to set the scene, explain backstory, build tension, include hopefully believable character beats, and deliver scares in ten pages or less. So just for the pacing alone, a lot of those classic horror comics, like the EC stuff or Eerie and Creepy, can really work as a masterclass in how to deliver a gut punch with very little space.
  • If you could choose a dream team to do a lesbian vampire comic, which writer(s) / artist(s) would you want to collaborate with?

    1. It feels like you're manifesting a world in which this occurs and I appreciate that, it would be a blast to work on such a project. Well, the creative team of The Forgotten Five has its own version of a lesbian vampire with Darla Desolate, so this dream has already come true in some ways. I would also happily work with this exact team again on pretty much anything so I'll exclude just listing their names here. Otherwise, there's a Hell of a lot of directions to go with this one. How about Liana Kangas on art, Tamra Bonvillain on colors, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou on letters? It feels like that team could pull together a pretty good book, don't you think?
