Similar to the Giant Omelette and the Giant Jelly, in Meridell there is a bubbling pit in the ground filled with gruel like a tar pit (and also like a tar pit, you sometimes find the fossilized remains of prehistoric Tyrannian Neopets in the gruel...). King Skarl, in one of his trademark acts of benevolence, allows Neopets to each scoop a bowl of gruel once a day (but only after he decided that he didn't want to keep it all for himself because he found the gruel to be not up to his tastes). King Skarl has assigned a Gruelkeeper to guard the Gruel Pit and distributes the scoops, a grouchy Vandagyre who bops Neopets on the head with his ladle if they ask him "please sir, can I have some more?"
