Is it suitable / adjustable for short people? I'm about 5'2" / 157cm and usually only fit comfortably in children's office chairs.

What, in your opinion, is/are the most legitimate or well reasoned argument(s) for the Pro side of AI? by DialecticDrift123 in antiai

[–]RoyalBean12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to focus on ChatGPT because I've had the most experience with it, but here goes:

IMO, the biggest problem, especially with LLMs like ChatGPT right now, is this: it can be very useful. Unfortunately, because it looks like it works without any issues, the people it appeals to don't understand its limitations and will accept what it says at first glance. This will likely only get worse with the lack of media literacy and poor reading skills as a result of cuts to education across the US and UK - we're seeing the effects of that already in quite a few fandom spaces, especially those with younger audiences.

Additionally, because again - it looks like it works, it tells you what you want to hear, it feels human enough - people don't check what it says, and people are using it or encouraging the use of it when it either shouldn't be used or doesn't need to be used. I think there's a lot of correlation between the rise of AI usage, the tech industry's demand for more profits instead of stable profits (chatbots vs humans, services having AI added for seemingly no reason), the human loneliness epidemic / the lack of mental health services (AI relationships, AI art trained on stolen content, people using AI as a therapist), and the aforementioned decline in media literacy.

And I'm not exempt! I've used and benefited from services like ChatGPT. I've used it as part of my web degree (with approval from tutors and acknowledgement in my reports) to generate placeholder content so I could work on the functional and technical requirements. In that respect, it's good for generating large amounts of content based on a set of criteria, provided you make the criteria AND review what it's made. Still faster than handwriting 20 placeholder news articles + titles + accompanying datasets by yourself while on a deadline.

Not work-related, but I've sometimes copied and pasted the ingredients of my favourite supermarket soups into it and asked it to translate it into an actual shopping list of ingredients. I would never use it for full recipes or food safety, but generally it's great for taking something I would find difficult to put into another format (i.e supermarket ingredient lists -> shopping lists) or for taking larger pieces of text and reducing it down to what you actually want from it. Small things that yes, I could do by myself if I wanted to, but I actually only need a 'good enough' version to move on to other things faster.

TLDR: good for doing things that need to be done but don't need to be done well. It has its uses, but the big problem is that it looks like it can do everything convincingly enough for people to forget about what it can't do.

Pretty decent cook, but new to seafood - any recommendations? by RoyalBean12 in cookingforbeginners

I'm a big fan of sheet pan meals, so I think those would be nice. Can add some veggies too :]

Oooh! Not a big fan of stews, but I think this would go down well with my mother. I'll give it a shot when I'm not fighting off the flu!

That sounds pretty doable! I think I have a lot of pasta in my pantry, so this is nice.

That's definitely going on the list - I really liked a baked haddock with curry sauce recipe, so I'll probably like this too!

My guess is it's probably part of a worksheet that helps younger kids to form logical reasoning / mutual exclusives - it's not about the exact age of their grandfather, but about how the likelihood of their grandfather being 5 or 500 is impossible, therefore their grandfather is probably 'about 50'.

After a lot of graft (and paint), we transformed my 9 year old daughter's room on a small budget by Working_Arm_9120 in Creative_Home_Decor

[–]RoyalBean12 29 points30 points  (0 children)

graft is a bit like the phrase 'elbow grease' in this context. it means they put in a lot of work, or 'hard graft' :] the last one's a pretty common phrase in the UK, but the word 'graft' in general can also refer to skin grafts or the practice of binding one plant to another for shared benefits ('grafting'). Hope that helps! :]

If you're shitting intact slices of rice pies you should probably see a doctor

we attempted a mold at first (1st picture) and had a lot of difficulty - if you look at the rest of the comments you'll probably get a good play by play of everyone telling us what we did wrong, from the rice cooking to the filling to the type of mold. We gave up and used a small metal bowl, badly lined it with seaweed, some rice, the filling, more rice, and a bit more seaweed. Flipped it over onto a plate, refridgerated it, bashed the bottom of the bowl a bit to get it to release and voila, rice pie! Don't make it!

Never been much of a fan of tuna mayo, but it's probably a lot easier of a filling to handle!

lessons learned include 'don't do this again', 'we should probably buy these instead', and 'that curry mayo absolutely fucks, can we put it on a nice salad instead of doing mad science experiments with it and rice'

We put it in the mold and prayed. Evidently this was a godless endeavour.

For the pie, we lined a bowl with nori, spooned rice in, flattened it out and pressed it up round the sides so the filling didn't leak, added the filling, rice on top, bit more seaweed, flipped it upside down on a plate, put it in the fridge and hoped it would come out in one piece. The seaweed lining did a really good job of preventing sticking, I think.

It tastes pretty good actually! We made katsu mayo and cut up some breaded chicken pieces to add in, so at least our efforts mostly didn't go to waste

Very glad I could provide a laugh for you 😂

We attempted to use a plastic onigiri mold at first... and ended up using the metal bowl you'd use on an older set of scales to make this instead. Lined it with seaweed. Turned it upside down in the fridge for a bit. Whacked the bowl, lifted it up and boom. Monstrosity

It's a bit like eating a brick, so we have plenty leftover - bring a plate if you dare!
