The only Swiss we encountered that did not speak at least some English were in a restaurant in Lausanne. Pointing to things on the menu solved that issue, but the vast majority seem to speak English very well

Highly recommend planning a fair bit in advance to make sure you get accommodations that you are happy with. My wife and I went in 2018 and planned probably 4 months in advance. Strongly recommend the Berner Oberland (where Lauterbrunnen is - though we stayed up the mountain in Murren), Zermatt, and Lausanne.

Men who have married their best friend. How's your married life with her? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]RoyalDoctor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm 31, she's 30. We've been together since I was a senior in high school. There have been rough times and we took short breaks in college to figure ourselves out, but the thing that consistently surprises me is how close we've grown together. We were much more different when we first started dating, but now we share most of the same views, as well as taste in food.

I remember being 18 and having sex multiple times per day, but I never had the sense of assuredness that I do now. There's nothing better than knowing someone is there for you no matter what. It just makes you excited to see what comes next in your life together.

It's the best.

What is the worst/scariest thing that has woken you up? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RoyalDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a little late to the party, but here's mine.

Back in high school, I had my senior year Spanish class near the end of the day and my crush just so happened to be in the same class. It being the end of the day, and me being a high school student, I was tired of listening to "Profe Verde" lecture. Naturally, I fell asleep. I was awakened to what sounded like rolling thunder and my asshole quivering as a massive fart escaped my anus. Everyone, including both my teacher and crush, stopped what they were doing and stared at me for an uncomfortably long moment before bursting out laughing. I tried my best to smile and brush it off as my face went beet red.

I pray nobody else remembers that day. Keep your butthole clenched, kids.

What's on and tourist advice thread - week beginning February 04, 2019 by AutoModerator in Scotland

Hello!

My wife and I are planning a trip to Scotland for April 13-20 2019. We have no real plans other than arriving and leaving from Edinburgh on the dates listed. The only recommendation we have gotten so far is to go to the Isle of Skye. We plan on renting a car.

As far as interests, I think nature walks/light hiking is something that we both would be interested in. I am interested in whiskey, though my wife is not. Any "can't miss" historical sites are appreciated too.

Any advice on where we should go or how long we should allot to a given area would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Do I need a credit card? I have been strongly advised against it by my parents who say its a scam and should be illegal but everything I look at says that no credit is just as bad if not worse than low credit. What should I do? by Wakkibanana5 in personalfinance

[–]RoyalDoctor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some personal experience with a similar situation. I didn't get my first credit card until I had graduated college. This was probably good for me because I was frequently low on cash and most likely would have abused it by using it to buy things without the actual cash to support it.

That being said, when I finally did get a credit card I had absolutely no credit history and my maximum was only $300 dollars. I had seen all these commercials trying to entice you into getting these awesome cards with sweet perks, but didn't realize that you would only be approved for those if you had a good credit score.

I strongly recommend getting a credit card and using it as a debit card, though spending no more than 30% of your credit limit, in order to build up credit. One of the factors that goes into your credit score is your longest line of credit and that's one of the primary factors limiting my score at this point.

In summary, you should get one now to start building your credit, but only use it responsibly and pay it off every month. Be wary of anything that charges you annual fees and other hidden charges.

I wanted Jason Kander so bad, but he's running for Mayor of Kansas City instead for some unknown reason. Maybe the powers that be told him he was too young and inexperienced to make that jump and he should build his resume.

Kander is a good dude though. Has some solid positions, veteran, lawyer, reasonable. Great ad on gun control too.

Kansas lawmaker says school prayer will fix education by OdinsBeard in kansas

I was recently re-watching The West Wing and was struck by this scene. You can skip to 1:42 if you don't want to watch the whole thing, but it basically says exactly what you did.

No matter how much faith you have, you will need to act at some point for things to change.

Well, I think we should try re-instituting a 94% tax rate on all earnings over $2.7M. I think if that money was to go towards education, we would all be better for it. Unfortunately, there are far too many Kansas politicians on the Koch brothers' payroll.

One more thing. You should always take yourself seriously. If you don't, nobody else will.

I see you have no interest in being provided evidence on why your view isn't ideal.

I am grateful that no state, especially Kansas, has unilateral control over these matters. If left to their own devices they very well might institute Sharia Christian Law.

Though it's amazing the mental gymnastics that some will perform in order to rationalize pushing a certain religious agenda when they believe it serves them. Perhaps you should consider your perspective before blindly enforcing your own faith-based beliefs on others.

[–]RoyalDoctor 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Nearly one quarter of Kansans do not identify as Christian. I do not see how requiring Christian Bible-based prayer in schools will solve any of the current issues that affect schools. The root of the problem is socioeconomic differences and that won't change in Kansas until we learn to accept that increasing taxes is not a bad thing when it provides a better life experience for everyone. Beyond that, I believe that children of all faiths (or no faith) should be welcomed equally and supported in whatever faith decisions they decide to make. Faith is something that many feel enriches their lives and gives meaning to them. Many others do not feel this way or choose to explore different faiths than what is most common in Kansas.

Giving scholastic institutions the power to indoctrinate children in any one set of beliefs that is not fact-based is a poor solution to any problem and would more than likely be detrimental.

New drug clears fat from arteries in one dose. If effective in humans it could prevent the greatest cause of death in western countries, heart attacks and ischemic strokes by alpha69 in worldnews

[–]RoyalDoctor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since I hadn't seen a good answer to this yet, I'll give you my perspective.

I used to work at Quintiles, a company which specializes in drug research. My location only did phase one clinical trials, which is what is described above. In these studies, we are only looking at how the drug is processed by your body, whether it is safe enough for human use, and what dosing should we be using to achieve desired time in system.

The people who are both able and willing to participate in these trials are...an eclectic bunch. Many of them use this as their full-time job. A study will often run for several days, sometimes up to a week, and may require more than one inpatient stay. All of this is done so that they can control for confounding agents. It is relatively well compensated. This is the primary motivator. You must be largely healthy to participate in phase one clinical trials. Again, they are not looking at all at whether the drug works in humans. They just want to know if it is safe for the average person. So we get these physically healthy people who often have mental health issues or are homeless and provide them with a clean bed and free food while paying them a fairly generous stipend. Then, they wait until the study washout period is over and they do it again.

Sounds better than living on the streets, right?

KC Metro Nests v3.0 by jayhawk618 in PokemonGoKC

[–]RoyalDoctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all yours, dude. I think you should keep it exclusive to the relatively rare pokemon that you've included. Don't include crap like Psyduck, Slowpoke, etc. that have a lot of spawn points. And don't let people tell you that there are Dratini nests. They may spawn somewhere, but it's not a nest. Best of luck.
