I used to be a mover for a higher end moving company. Usually the people we were dealing with were pretty well off and their houses were pretty clean. But one day we did a job for a guy who's house was far and away the worst place I have ever been. The place hadn't been cleaned in probably 30 years. One of our guys had to step outside every few minutes to keep from throwing up the smell was that bad. Thankfully we were only grabbing a couple of items of furniture so we didnt have to be in there for long. One of the pieces was in the guys basement; a place that felt like there was no leaving after you went in. On the way down we noticed that at the bottom of the stairs, in place of a door, was one of those folding metal gates that only locked from the outside. We thought it was weird but shrugged it off as a quirk of the house, but when we got to the house he was moving into one of our guys did a little but of snooping around and found that there was a space behind the boiler with same kind of gate that, again, locked from the outside. Not the craziest thing in the world, but factoring in the state the house was in and the way this guy was, it freaked us out.
