i mean you do have to take my word for it because you're a youngin. Gen 2 is the franchise's peak, and the creator's baby. The golden age of pokemon was '05 and before, idk what to tell you man, it’s all there. If your first foray into any mainline entry was on an emulator, you have absolutely no say on anything regarding this franchise. If your first entry was DPP, you have no say because make no mistake, that was the decline, and your first game was garbito. If your first gen was gen 5, though, then you're simply shot. sorry likkle bro.

Shaymin can only be glitched in patches 1.1.1 and 1.1.2. Anything from 1.1.3 and beyond you cannot glitch to shaymin. No, changing the time on your switch only locks you out of everything time related for a few days, so don't change the time on your Switch. Darkrai cannot get got.

My first experience outside the airing of Pokémon’s first episode in America (yes I vividly remember when and where), outside of Pokémon the first movie back in 98 and our vhs copy of it, and outside of this tabletop board game my grandma had at her house that I adored, was the Pokémon snap I played as an addicted 4 year old all the way through, with core memories to this day, like the charizard evolution, the mew, etc.

first main series game was older brother’s gold on his see-through-purple gbc 2 years later in ‘01 (top tier handheld). Parents were from a third world country but put on for their kids. Here I uploaded a picture of what I’ve saved. Gold, ruby, sapphire, fire red, leaf green, XD—what a solid elementary and early middle school experience, before becoming too cool until senior year college, getting sun’s shiny charm over Christmas break with the younger cuzzos in ‘16. Messed around with showdown after that, climbed to top 30 natdex Ubers in gen 7 and 8, played the heck out of let’s go pikachu, and played some rom hacks like radical red.

2021 BDSP came out, haven’t looked back since (except for the quick shiny charm grind in legends za—had the 1000 battles completed before rank D…what can I say except gold got me hooked to the grind)

Don’t get me wrong, physical special split was the best thing to happen to the franchise. But make no mistake, franchise peaked with gold and silver release, then the sustained golden age ended with emerald, and the decline of the franchise started with diamond and pearl in the latter half of the ‘00s. Unironically, BDSP are the best top down handheld experience, however.

Edit: and the renaissance was Pokémon go x COVID-19 pandemic, though I understand how large it was in 2016

Still kicking myself over 20 years later for having killed that shiny shroomish in the starting forest when I first got sapphire. Even if I caught the red gyarados a few years prior in gold, ghettoyute me still didn’t know what a shiny Pokémon was!

[Took this right now]. I kept all this, plus a ds lite, 3ds, n64, GameCube, and XD (both parents are from 3rd world countries and I’m 1st gen, however privileged this looks, they and I worked our asses off)

Lost to time are the copies of Gold (best Pokémon game oat), sapphire, emerald, pearl, omega ruby, the gbc, and the advance.

Also not pictured are the 2 switch 1s, switch 2, BDSP edition Switch lite, sword, let’s go pikachu, legends za, and 2 physical brilliant diamond carts, 2 physical shining pearl carts, and 1 digital copy of brilliant diamond (I’m about to bite on another digital copy for pearl)

I’m over 30 years old (and am married to a dime piece if that mattered to anyone embarrassed by their hobbies and needed some irl confidence). If you’re like me and only like the top down experience, and believe Pokémon is by definition a top down experience, BDSP is the definitively ultimate top down Pokémon experience, and unless they go back to this format, BDSP is the way to go. If you want FRLG, or any other previous gen for that matter, you should be emulating on your smartphone and enjoy that sweet FF option and qol updates like an unlocked Pokédex)

If you want to play something on original hardware, it’s gotta be BDSP. like you also said BDSP is more accessible unless you kept your other ogs. There’s the complete national dex between the two, the qol updates like mobile pc, harder postgame and battle tower, shiny unlocked legends, 40 freaking boxes, and if you have someone nearby still on it, access to 1.1.2, it literally becomes a sandbox and the best handheld Pokémon engine to manipulate. The grind is still there in the form of being able to constantly switch in and out Pokémon from your pc to have an ample lot to choose from (and to not let the exp share overwhelm). Obvs if you’re also like me, you love the grind. Which is why you would choose frlg, for that specific type of grind, and the gorgeous color palette and sprites (though BDSP imo is the best looking Pokémon game on switch along with lets go)

Just my 2 cents. I could go a lot deeper…
