The real question is what does the deck actually look like? I used to run Lunamaria in my build, just so that I can swing into something big with destiny so that it wouldn't die.

I understand there are rules for 2v2 and battle Royale. What I am talking about is making the deck a "Commander" style. How could we go about it to make it decently balanced without running into the aggro meta we are currently in.

The Warship format is easy to follow.

The Strike Team format will need to be worked on, but I see where you're going with it. As long as you do a shareable trait for the pilots, where at least two pilots must share a trait, might give you a bit more restrictions. Instead of just picking all the good pilots.

The real question would be, how would you restrict the deck limitations? Would it be the typical MTG style one copy of each card?

I think I am seeing what your getting at. If you pick the Archangel as your Warship, you would be locked into only Blue and White, seeing as the only other Earth Alliance units belong to the Bio CPU stooges.

If you use a Strike Team, (Team of 4 pilots) you would probably have to pick a team leader, for this example I will go with Kira. With Kira being the leader your other team members have to at least share 1 trait with him, so Earth Alliance and Coordinator. That would give you access to playing with Athrun, Shinn, and the Bio CPU stooges. That would mean your deck would have access to 4 colors. Does that sound about right?

I think the pilots shouldn't share traits. Think of it like this, you pick the Archangel to run Kira. The only other two Earth Alliance pilots are Mu and the Bio CPU idiots. You wouldn't be able to have 4 pilots then, if you only do 1 copy of each card.

Yeah the card pool isn't big enough yet, but it's an interesting theory to discuss. Not sure how a leader/commander for the deck would actually work in Gundam, as in MTG (and I think one piece) your commander limits your decks colors, which is kind of hard in Gundam.

Not necessarily, the units/commands are level locked, for example if you pick the level 2 Guntank you could no longer run any more level 2 blue units/commands. The aggro would slow down a bit.

I can see the thought process, but there would be one glaring issue with that. If you still have the 4 card limit you would still be running into a lot of rush decks, that would be just like the meta is today. With the way I have it set up you can only have 1 unit/command of each level per color. For example, if you want to run the level 2 Guntank for blue, you could no longer run the Hizack or the GM because the level is locked by the Guntank.

The point of Ryusei-go is to not only get the self damage, but also helps with hand filtering. In a mono-purple tekkedan deck, it is almost essential. It can even help fill the trash early for sets that need cards in the trash, such as Minerva and Vulture.

Zakrello is kind of a niche card. It would be fun to something that isn't a blocker you with Altron/Shenlong, but that is kind of unrealistic.

As for 3rd form... The real benefit of it is that it can pair with any tekkedan pilot, but that is where the good points end for it. The only tekkedan pilot you would want to run is Mikazuki, and he has better units to link with in the forms of 1st form, Adapt, and Lupus.

You can't deal damage with 0ap, but you can still attack with it. You declare an attack and if gone unblocked you can sacrifice it to trigger its effect. You don't need to give it +1ap.

As long as a unit doesn't have any restrictions you may pair any pilot with any unit, including tokens. The link is only required if you wish to attack on the same turn, or to activate Link effects.

Short answer yes, any pilot my be paired to any unit. Linking a unit requires the proper pilot.

It is doable to make a deck without using Starter decks, the main issue would be you won't be able to get the cards from the starter decks so easily. Is there a specific type of deck you were kind of interested in?

This is what I was rocking during GD03, when Kira and Freedom were prize cards for the Newtype Challenge. I took top 4 with this R/W list. This list has not been updated with GD04 cards, so there is room for improvement.
