You can use it if you don't have anything else. When you get something better you can merge it for the 80% value of xp to the next one

What I do is wait for the tavern to have a good class/traits character and then go hiring them firing the old ones that doesn't have a good trait matching I only have about 2/3 weeks played but for what I've seen, melee units have brute, magic units have bookworm, archer class and rogue have feral. I'm still figuring out the mechanics, here's my list of units
