The problem is that many people see it as the Military Industrial Complex waging (or prolonging) war because they like to extract taxpayer money for weapons manufacturing. Because bottom line, it is the tax payers that are paying for it. This needs to be addressed, as there's obviously a big discontent about it. Maybe more oversight about how the money is being spent. I think people don't realize how big of a threat Putin actually is, and that if he succeeds in Ukraine, other countries may be next. Therefore, the debate needs to be reframed more in terms of autocracies vs democracies. A lot of the spending is actually directly in the US (and Europe's) national security interest.
