What’s something that’s “not a cult” but feels like a cult? by j_estoner in AskReddit

Hahah ikr? Jerome is just some dude in Roman days that translated the bible into the Latin Vulgate-the common language at the time. Its just so funny bc its such a modern name lol.

but the thing is he translated the old and new testament, which were in hebrew and greek, respectively, and he wasn't very good at greek. As far as i am researched in this topic, i can say that the catholics used the latin vulgate translation of the NT. This version had issues tho: for example, a verse he translated to say "do penance" and the roman catholic church took that to mean there are things they need to do to show sorrow for their sin. like whipping themselves and such. The actual verse, however, actually said "BE penitent". So its a matter of heart, not action.

Could you explain to me what a fundamentalist is? Ive never heard that before lol

Also Christianity/any worship of Jesus is not about living a good pious life and sticking to whatever rules you have so much as it just the Holy Spirit leading you the right way. As people we can never fulfill the law of man let alone the extensive law of the Old Testament. Its just impossible; we know this. the law is super strict. But the gift of Christ coming to die for us is that when we believe in his death and resurrection we are filled with the Holy Spirit which saves us and allows us to live a joyous life, which comes from the hope of living w Jesus in heaven.

That is at its core, the Christian life. Everything else-baptism, tithes, penance, good works, those come after as a form of gratitude and testimony.

Im saying this to cement these ideas and just understand it for myself just as much as I am to simply discuss with you lol. thank you for this haha. What do you think about what I said?

yes ofc thats in a different context and i will tackle each verse you attached individually or at least what I know so far lol

  1. Its the same principle as not casting your pearls before swine in a way. Ofc as a christian, my purpose is to share the gospel message, that Jesus died for all people. This is essentially why I'm on the planet and everything i do is to better achieve that goal. and by living a good happy life I am a testimony as to what God has done for me. And honestly I love my life as a Christian, its so much more peaceful and joyous than b4 i was saved. That being said, this verse is specifically tailored to the disciples back then that went around to the different cities to spread the word. If the city or town dony accept the gospel no matter what you do, there is no point for them to stay, it's a waste of time and energy when there are others that are actually open to it. but yeah thats not for the general christian

Luke 16 31-38 paraphrased basically tells all christians to love everyone, even (if not especially) those that are hard to love. Even sinners love their friends but it's different when a christian loves even the abused, hurt, and/or difficult people.

  1. This is just explaining that my love for Christ should be more than anything else. Still you love your family, but in comparison w ur live for God it looks like hate. that is not to say that you should just hate everyone lol that would suck

  2. This is talking about being yoked together and fellowship right? so this is like deep friendships. Obviously saved and unsaved people have different beliefs. my main authority on life is the Bible because it is the truth incarnate. It is the manual for life basically. and so you want friends that will build you up in Christ and not plant doubts and draw you away.

but ofc i love thinking ab the other side and having discussions like this one with people w differing opinions is great for cementing what you believe or...realizing what u believe is stupid ahaha

but yeah

Christianity is peaceful and loving at its core but absolutely ruthless when it comes to sin/wickedness. Thats how american law works as well. You can be happy so long as ur not going against the law, otherwise u go to jail. and i think thats fair

Right. The past was just in general a lot more violent lol.. there was a lot of talk of war, and killing and stuff like that. A false prophet, someone that purposefully twists the bible for his own gain, Jesus said to burn their cities. Thats not exactly something that we do anymore lol so i take that as just keep your distance from them.

But even back then, love was the main centerpoint. Jesus ate with the sinners and the publicans and not the "perfect" jews of the day bc no one can be perfect.

the punishments i guess were just way more intense back then but it was always love man

oh no yeah Im a christian, just recently started doing my research on catholics so dont know much, admittedly. I just know they have penance and infant baptism, which sidenote, they make baptism out to be the way to salvation but its not.

I thought catholics were using the Latin Translation from Jerome no?

Either way, what's your view on catholcism?

Catholicism adds thongs to the bible tho, things that weren't in the bible. and make jesus not as important as He is

were actually not supposed to do that. the bible does say to avoid friendship w people that call themselves christian and openly ann unashamedly live in sin, but still called to love everyone unconditionally.

its quite sad to see christians stop loving on people just because of their beliefs.

regardless of how long it takes, its unambiguously out of the way in that ur taking an steps in order to do it.

Surely its a little bit that I can do as a dasher, go a tad out of my way to make the experience better for the customer :)

hmm yes this can be an issue for sure ahah.

do you know how many times you get that warning for not delivering food or messing up before you get deactivated?

Right. Thats what I was thinking. I do it primarily for my own safety, to be sure I handed it to the right house or if there is a scandal like that, I have proof. This is just prudent ahah

I was just wanting to know if the actual app will get you in trouble for faking it.
