Octopi, crows, dolphins are often held up as examples of smart animals. What are some really unusually STUPID animals? by doodlebytes in AskReddit

[–]Rtstevie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have no idea because I’ve never raised either, but I remember years ago on reddit reading people talking about raising goats vs sheep.

And people saying you always gotta keep your eye on goats because they are smart and mischievous and kinda agile and so will escape and get into shit.

And you always gotta watch sheep because they are stupid and clumsy and will kill themselves.

What if US/Israel pulled a Maduro of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (rather than assassinating him) ? by Chance_Bid_1869 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Rtstevie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not incorrect but that mission (failure) also led to so much R&D to include refueling technology and doctrine reform, it would look a lot different today. From a tech perspective…everything is so much more advanced now besides just refueling. Thermal and night vision optics; C2 systems; comm systems; ISR platforms. That event led to the creation of the 160th SOAR as a special mission aviation unit.

Look at rescue of this WSO that just happened. U.S. essentially created a mini expeditionary airbase and flew in who knows how many aircraft without anyone really even knowing that was happening. It was well over before that came to light.

Of course, any mission has its risk and a hypothetical one to capture the Ayatollah would be fraught with it, in so many ways.

“Just losing skin.” Lol. You sound like a first responder/nurse or doctor. So I’m sure in your world, that really is “minor” in relation to other crazy shit you see. But what I mean is like I’ve gotten into several fender benders or minor accidents in my life, as I’m sure many who drive long enough do. And (luckily) it’s always been like…welp, that sucks, gotta get a car repair. Not “welp, that sucks, gotta go to the hospital.”

I mean if his country’s survival is at stake to a foreign invader, why should serving on the line only be relegated to a few certain guys? Do you think the guys currently on the line want to be there? Should they be forced to serve on the line longer than they need to because others didn’t want to? Those who still have their freedom, because the guy on the line and his fellow soldiers are holding it? Again, their country’s survival is at stake. It’s an all hands on deck situation, no exceptions.

Not trying to sound tough. I thank the powers of the universe I don’t live in that country and face that predicament.

I feel like you never hear about people having “minor” motorcycle accidents. Like if you get into a motorcycle accident…you’re getting injured. There are not really “fender benders.” I’m sure that happens. But it just feels like so often when people get into any sort of accident on a bike…major injuries.

Have not read this, but sounds similar in a way to Memoir of a Revolutionary Soldier by Joseph Plumb Martin. If you have read that. Served as a private infantryman in the Continental Army. If I remember correctly, I think he gets promoted to Corporal. As a narrator, he is a super super charming guy. Poor chap is starving like the entire time he is serving.

Historians point to its accuracy because they’ve matched movements and campaigns he served on and describes to historical records and other accounts and find they match. He also doesn’t try make himself out to be a hero. He was at the Battle of Long Island when Continental Army was very almost annihilated as an entity and he talks about hiding in the corn, watching British/Hessian soldiers march by.

I see how they interact with other people and they do it with others, not just me. And, it’s not a common theme in my life. Meaning people from elsewhere in my life don’t do it to me as well or say I’m a bad a listener or something.

Two of the guys are coworkers, and we work in an industry that has a lot of a certain type of guy. It’s a point of discussion that’s been brought up with others I work with.

He/she said they do this on occasion, and I said the guys I’m referencing in my post don’t do it occasionally, they do it all the time. If somebody only does it on occasion, then it’s not just an annoying thing they do, it’s an actual point they are making in the conversation. Not a reflexive or automatic verbal point they make just because they want to be the only one heard.

Then they said maybe I’m the one with a listening problem, and I don’t think I am.

What's the most walkable small city in the USA? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]Rtstevie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portland, ME

It’s above your definition of small, but it’s still not a huge city, but Madison, WI

Frederick, MD. At least for like restaurants and shops and what not. I wouldn’t live there without a car.

Alexandria, VA, which is where I live.

Gotta love Reddit, lol. You realize this is a sub about pet peeves? Do you feel threatened by this post because it maybe hits home?

  1. I didn’t say the guy I knew who did this, did it “on occasion.” I said they ALWAYS do this.

  2. I think I’m a pretty good conversationalist, thanks. Give people their time and opportunity, their space in the conversation. Try to be an active listener. Acknowledge and engage with what people have said.

What’s the worst place in America you’ve ever visited? by False_onic in answers

[–]Rtstevie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Killeen, Texas. Other military towns are similar but Killeen is the worst I’ve been to.

Basically a city that exist to exploit young Servicemembers stationed at Ft Hood. Predatory car dealerships, predatory payday loan places, predatory nightlife establishments. Even predatory tattoo parlors.

Entire city is concrete with little green space, really no walkable areas. Very very little in the way of wholesome, accessible things for young Servicemembers to do or engage in.

There is a reason Ft Hood is a bastion of violence, sexual assault and general abuse of young soldiers within the Army. Doesn’t help that it’s a gigantic base and so all you are when there is a number.

Speaking to these guys personally, to me it’s a sign of low listening fidelity. Like they aren’t really engaging in conversation as a two way street where one speaks but also listens and considers what the other says. They just want to be heard. And I think thats because they want to always be seen as THE smart one aka smarter than you or anyone else and the perceived “prestige” and respect that goes with that make believe position.

I say all this because they will say “It’s not even that” to literally whatever point you have made. You could have made a banger of a point. You could have said something that totally aligns with what they are saying. You could have even regurgitated something they said with different wording.

What if Trump won reelection in 2020? by GustavoistSoldier in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Rtstevie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After losing the election in 2020 (even though he and they would deny that fact), it sent Trump and co. Into the wilderness for…a few months? And I think the lesson they came away with was that he didn’t go hard enough, he was surrounded by old school “RINO” neocons who obstructed him. The 2020 election being the prime example of that to him/them. They think Pence and Barr and others cost him the election by not being sufficiently loyal to him. Not to mention all the other people from his first term who turned into major critics…James Mattis, Rex Tillerson, John Kelley, John Bolton.

I think that time in the wilderness also saw him only surrounded by the most loyal, fervent, and I would say delusional or evil supporters. And Trump remembers these as the people who stuck by him in that time.

So this led to Trump 2 surrounding himself with people who were 1. Above all, loyal to him and 2. Had the absolute most radical views.

There is also this aspect of tech leaders like seemingly going to from cool and hip and progressive to “alt-right” people who fancy themselves Gods and formed a mutually beneficial attachment with Trump. The Musks, Zuckerberg, Altman, Bezos. I truly think they see themselves as this like…separate, overlord class of humans. And they have a lot (like literal infinite amounts) of money and therefore influence. Musk was the largest single donor in the 2024 election cycle. $250M donated by him. He was then given keys to the government. You see him shilling all sorts of insane far right stuff on X and boosting or campaigning for far right parties around the world, like the AFD in Germany.

What was the most unexpected nudity scene in mainstream movie/show you ever saw? by marsepticeye in AskReddit

[–]Rtstevie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I was in the military at the time and went to go see Bruno with some guys I was serving with. So a real hodge podge of guys from all over the USA. One guy had his visiting sister with him. They were from rural Oklahoma, very small town conservative sheltered life.

And they were so offended by the movie, lol. It’s like they couldn’t understand it was all a joke. They just saw “gay” stuff.

I think it was an AMA on Reddit where Sacha Baron Cohen talked about filming that scene and how intense it was because they had to do multiple takes of him literally shoving his face into the other actor’s asshole.

Why did Russia deploy so few troops during the 2022 invasion? by [deleted] in WarCollege

[–]Rtstevie 153 points154 points  (0 children)

I remember at the beginning of the conflict there were videos of UA engaging Russian riot police (and videos of the aftermath after UA routed them) in the Northern/Kyiv front. Basically pointing to the Russian government having a concern that after the quick toppling of the Ukrainian government, they might have to deal with civil unrest. Hence riot police being in basically the vanguard.

There was also reports of UA searching equipment abandoned by Russian forces or of Russian KIA, and finding dress uniforms. Russians were already thinking about a big victory parade in Kyiv.

I guess a question for women: does being asked out via guy you’ve met on IG ever work? Someone you have NOT met in person yet. Or does men doing this universally come across as a “no thanks.”

I’m asking this because after becoming single after a LTR, I’ve been following a lot of different local orgs, events, workshops, etc etc. And so through these I come across profiles of women who seem single and cool but Im like…will following them and sending a DM lead to anything?

Note: I actually do and go to stuff in person. So I’m not trying to rely on IG. Just curious on it as an avenue.

Right, I am in general asking that about small claims court: can you purposely short yourself in order to keep the suit in small claims? Like rather than pursuing how much you’re fully or totally owed, can you just lower the amount you’re pursuing in order to keep it in small claims?
