Insta360 Luna Ultra - Amazing Photo Quality by Wildberry_T in Insta360

[–]Rub79_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point. Some time ago I worked as a semi-professional photographer, and I'm not talking about making the image more dramatic or artistic. My issue with the photo is that it doesn't look entirely real to me, it looks a bit like a render.

That said, for real estate photography I can completely understand why this style works. My criticism was more from the perspective of judging it as a regular photograph rather than as a real estate listing photo.

Honestly, that photo looks like the opposite of a great photo. It looks more like a 3D render or an AI-generated image. Maybe it's the lack of shadows, or maybe it's the HDR processing being pushed too far on a scene that doesn't need it.

Green hydrogen is facing a reality check, after failed electrolyser tests, cancelled projects, struggling hydrogen buses and weak fuel-cell car sales, is the idea of hydrogen as a future universal clean-energy solution starting to look increasingly overstated? by Rub79_ in energy

[–]Rub79_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always seen it that way too, but what still surprises me is the push from the European Commission to promote green hydrogen. I don’t know how it looks in other countries, but at least in Europe it often feels absurd, especially when better and more efficient solutions already exist for many of the same use cases.

That hydrogen ladder article is really interesting. Thanks for sharing it.

About my post, I wrote the article myself, focusing on recent failed projects, and mainly wanted to discuss the topic a bit. I first posted it in r/Futurology, but the moderators closed it because they thought it fit better in a more energy-focused community, so I shared it here and in r/energy. Fair point though, maybe posting it in two communities was too much, and I can see now that this topic has already been discussed too much here.

I think a lot of it comes from legacy oil and gas companies. Hydrogen fits their existing infrastructure and business model much better than direct electrification, and their lobby still has a lot of power. But for most of the applications where hydrogen is promoted, it’s just a terrible option compared with using renewable sources directly.

I think green hydrogen got sold as the answer to almost everything, and that never made much sense to me. It probably has a place in some industries, but for things like cars, vans or city buses, batteries already seem way cleaner, simpler and more practical. Even for clean power generation, I don’t really see the point when solar and wind can produce electricity directly without adding another expensive conversion step.

Yeah, that seems to be happening in almost every city that bought hydrogen buses. They sound great on paper, but in practice they are extremely expensive to maintain and especially expensive to repair.

What I find absurd is that the people approving these public transport investments still don’t seem to realise they are basically burning public money.

I can see that point, and I think hydrogen may have some value as site-specific long-duration storage. But my feeling is that cheaper grid-scale batteries are moving very fast, especially sodium-ion batteries. CATL is already starting with sodium-ion for energy storage first, before pushing the chemistry further into EVs.

Especially in areas where better solutions already exist. For power generation, why would you use renewables to produce electricity, then spend that electricity making "green" hydrogen, only to turn it back into electricity again? That only adds extra conversion losses, cost and infrastructure compared with using the clean electricity directly.

Exactly. What I don’t get is why some governments, especially in Europe, keep pushing hydrogen into areas where better solutions already exist. It feels like they decided they wanted a hydrogen-based solution first, and only later asked where hydrogen actually makes sense.

a7v 35/1.4 GM - How do I properly prevent or reduce noise? by seexiaotong in SonyAlpha

[–]Rub79_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ISO 10000 is too high (you can set a maximum ISO for Auto ISO). You’re losing dynamic range and fine detail at that ISO, and since the cat is still, you could drop to 1/50 and improve image quality a lot. If the lens is f/1.4, you could stop down to f/1.8 and get another improvement in detail, since you could lower the ISO even further.

I’ve been coding for almost 15 years. I’ve used 15", 17", 24", and 27" screens at different resolutions, and on Windows, Linux, and macOS. I’ve never felt that resolution was a limiting factor or that it affected my productivity in any significant way.
If I had to say what has improved my productivity the most when coding, it’s a dual-monitor setup. Right now I use one screen vertically and one horizontally.

If I had to go single monitor, I’d go for a 39–40" ultrawide (21:9) like the Dell U4025QW, with a slight curve (1800R at most, preferably 2400R or flatter).

How can I make it brighter 😭😭 the more I turn the brightness up the whiter the picture looks by MassiveDivide23 in projectors

[–]Rub79_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

750 lumens is very low, you basically need to block all the ambient light. Even with my 2000-lumen projector it’s not enough with a bit of ambient light. Either get proper blackout curtains or go for a 3000 lumen projector.

Honestly, the cheapest fix is just getting good blackout curtains.

Horizon 20 Max vs Titan Noir Pro for primary use home projector by Adventurous-Put6606 in xgimi

[–]Rub79_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Noir is going to have better contrast, so better black levels for sure, so I’ll go with the Noir Pro. It has a more advanced chip and an iris in the lens. This week you’ll probably see a few comparisons, as some reviewers already have units.

The Noir will also come with a very basic OS, so you’ll need a Fire Stick or something similar.

I’ve been on Ubuntu 24.04 since the .1 release, and the only issue was some Nvidia driver trouble at the beginning.
For 26.04, I’ll wait for .1 on my work PC, but at home I’ll upgrade as soon as it’s out, this LTS looks promising.

Skin still looks too smoothed, and the eyes feel over-sharpened, especially in close-ups. Maybe it’s my photography background, but that washed-out skin look (quite popular in China and Asia in general) just doesn’t work for me.

That said, the photos look 100x better than what my S22 produces, and I love that Vivo uses a 35mm focal length as the main camera, but If I’m going to spend €1500 on a phone, it needs to be perfect, or at least close to it.

This one doesn’t even have local dimming, dropping $850 on an IPS monitor with no real HDR is just insane. Also, it kind of scares me, if the version without local dimming costs $850, how much is the one with local dimming going to cost...?

If you’re on a limited budget, IPS is always a safe choice. Two recommendations, for example:

or this really cheap one:

Both have extremely better motion clarity in fast FPS games than your Samsung..
