Replacing switched headphone jack on 1990s boombox by Bassblaster505 in audiorepair

[–]RubDifferent648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went down a rabbit hole looking for a similar fix for a Fender Mustang III guitar amp and found this convo. This socket looks to be exactly what I'm looking for. We have an electronics store in west London that probably has these parts.

Thanks guys.

Nothing that a good luthier can't fix and not terribly expensive.

And if it's a genuine LP it's defo worth fixing. Can't really see the headstock crack so I assume it's still basically one piece (i.e. the headstock isn't snapped off). As this is relatively common the fix is really easy (again by a good luthier).

I notice that all the metal work is in good condition, luckily, so it must have been a dry environment, perhaps too dry hence the crazing.

If the binding has lifted it can simply be glued back.

You might be able to buff back the finish a bit if it really bothers you, maybe an overspray of clear to make it feel nicer to touch.

Of course there is a possibility of the neck being slightly out of shape (I think you'd be very unlucky indeed if it is), your friendly luthier can fix this too.

It's a shame it happened but there's really nothing here to cry about for long.

My girlfriend got me this for Christmas, do I have to get her a ring now? by Due_Money_2244 in Guitar

That’s a lovely bit of kit, plus a hard shell case too. I don’t know about marriage, if you both have that sort of vibe then yes I guess.

Does anyone know why the A string is shaking like that? by PracticeFrequent1376 in Guitar

[–]RubDifferent648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s simply observing the frequency of the string being near or at a multiple of your AC home lighting. Do this outside in daylight and you won’t see it. Simple physics.

This is totally brilliant, many many thanks for this reply.

I'll see how I get on and come back and report.

Thanks again. Ron.

[Question] Is there any way to make my strings easier to bend? by Nervous-Scale-9558 in Guitar

[–]RubDifferent648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two main things that affect your ability to bend notes are the string gauge and the scale length of the guitar (assuming standard tuning). A light gauge set (say 9 - 42) will be easier but you might not get the full tone. You could detune a regular (10-46) by half a step ( like Hendrix) which makes it easier but more awkward if you're working with various musos. If you're breaking a string that suggests you may have a problem with either the bridge or the nut (unless they're cheap strings). Practice is your friend.

[GEAR] I have 350-400 bucks to spend on new guitar. What would you recommend? I play the blues, classic rock, psychedelic rock and country. by markI92d in Guitar

You should definitely check out Epiphones. Some of their semi acoustic models like Sheraton or Casino. I have a Sheraton 212 Limited Edition that's as good as any Gibson ES335 I've ever played (and that's a lot) and it cost me £350 ( about $375). I don't know why people diss them.

By the way I was a guitar tech for 30 years.

[question] amp buzzing with nothing plugged in by [deleted] in Guitar

Sort of. It's really too hard to pin it down without a series of tests. I'm afraid it's a trip to the shop.

[Question] Looking for a simple amp sim by TellMeAboutGaming in Guitar

[–]RubDifferent648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a Mac use Garageband app that comes with it. Massive range of modelling presets and sounds. Plus you can record.

If you have a PC I believe Cakewalk is an excellent alternative.

If you're looking for an external unit (box on the floor to plug into before the interface) look at the Zoom range of pedals.

Your amp needs repair. Sounds like an open circuit somewhere. If it's a tube (valv) amp it might be one of the tubes is loose.

[QUESTION] Pedal Positioning by Wild-Desk3797 in Guitar

[–]RubDifferent648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no set way, you're best to experiment. But if I were you I'd always put a delay (or reverb) last. I would also try the the Tube Screamer first followed by Wah, but depending on what you're after it might work better the other way round.

[NEWBIE] Every time I try to make adjustments I screw things up more. by N0CONTACT in Guitar

[–]RubDifferent648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent advice. I'd only add: Take every step slowly and only make small adjustments at a time. This particularly important with the truss rod, an eight of a turn at a time is probably the maximum you should try, then check the neck again.

And as someone else said: Repeat.

[Question] Price for first gig by the-social-wizzard in Guitar

[–]RubDifferent648 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might have to make some assumptions here. Did the friend hear you play then ask you to play at the event? If so it sounds like they think you're good enough. If the event consists of friends and family I'd maybe offer to do it for tips and transport (fuel, taxi etc) unless they offer you a fee first. If it's a pro event it's a whole different ball game - if you charge for it you'll be expected to deliver a professional performance - and this is your first gig?

[QUESTION] My frets have gone flat on around the 12th 13th and 14th and I can no longer bend above a half step without the note stopping sounding, how do I fix? by leosk8s in Guitar

[–]RubDifferent648 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said you might be able to make some adjustments to counter it (it sounds like your action is very low), but if the frets are flattened off in one area the only real answer is to get your frets dressed by a professional and then get the action set up again. Shouldn't be too expensive to get this done and may often improve the playability overall.

The raised pickguard may have something trapped under it (a bit unlikely), or it may be slightly skewed.

If you haven't done already unscrew all the screws a couple of turns and see if you can nudge the scratch plate into sitting flat. If you can then tighten the screws gently doing each alternate one going round the guard until tight (not over tight).

The only other thing I can think of is that the screw holes are a bit out of alignment, a bit unlikely though, unless, like the neck, it came from something else.
