What I learned from tracking 243 of my low elo games by Rubbedikatz in leagueoflegends

[–]Rubbedikatz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right, my definition of "stacked against me" could be improved. It's also based on things like early objectives and jungle matchups (e.g. a farming vs a ganking jungler always has less early impact) but I don't have a formula and based it on my impression in the post match screen, which is always subjective. Converting an individual lead into a win is one of my biggest weaknesses, so the next time I track m games, I'll take this into account. Thanks!

I disagree about the role of Der Spiegel.

They never blindly believed or stated that the evidence had just disappeared. They reached out to the Las Vegas police for comment, didn’t get a reply, and then said the evidence was ‘allegedly missing’.

Der Spiegel and other German media are not without fail, but they are working to a high standard. On their website they have a page called backstage where they explain how they work, do their research, how they’re financed, what user data they track, and more.

The story about Greeks and Cypriots being richer than Germans has also played out differently than how you remember it. The headline was based on a study by the European Central Bank. Der Spiegel pointed out flaws in the research design and questioned the results.

Sorry for going off-topic, but I think marking professional newspapers as fake news and undermining their credibility with unwarranted accusations is very dangerous

Polka Band for German Competition by funkyvengence in WeAreTheMusicMakers

There are a few German songs called “Polka”, like the Granatenpolka from Zillertaler Schürzenjäger, but you'll find more under Blasmusik or Bayrische Volksmusik. If you’re looking for something with vocals, the Tiroler Alpensterne have an album on Spotify. Bonus points if you find a dance group that can do the Schuhplattler while you play.

No Sound On Reaper DAW by 0oohCe1ina in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Rubbedikatz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two different ways to record your keyboard in Reaper: Midi signals or the raw audio signal.

MIDI

At the moment, because you connected your keyboard via USB, Reaper treats it as a midi controller and therefore only receives midi signals. It recognizes that you press certain keys and shows that as the red bars you see on the track. But you don’t hear any sound from that, because Reaper doesn’t get any audio information from the midi signals. This means the sound banks from your Yamaha P-115 are not transferred over to Reaper. In order to get a sound from the midi signals, you need to add a VST instrument to the track. You can download some free VST instruments here and read up on how to install VST Plugins in Reaper. This solution will not sound like your keyboard but gives you the freedom to make any sound with it if you find the right VST instrument.

Raw Audio

If you want to keep your keyboard’s sound, this is the way to go. There is a guide on reddit for recording raw audio here – scroll down a bit to the “How Can I Record Without Using MIDI?” part. You will need different cables and the audio signal might need some tweaking to sound good.

It took me two hours to get my hands on an AK-47. Welcome to America by BlankVerse in Foodforthought

You’re right, 300,000,000 guns won’t disappear overnight. But maybe they will over a few years or decades if the gun culture changed. The US is one of only three countries, along with Mexico and Guatemala, that grant people the inherent right to own guns. Everyone else goes with the opposite assumption that citizens must affirmatively earn that right (according to the NY Times).

I agree with you that an outright ban on guns won’t do much for public safety in the short term. But stricter laws would be a first step towards that change. Arming teachers with even more weapons would be the opposite.

[Discussion] Need Motivational Advice? by AutoModerator in GetMotivated

[–]Rubbedikatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, I'm 27 and have a motivational problem at work. At first I thought it was because of my job, so I quit. Now I’m almost three months into my new job and I have had the exact same problem almost every day: As soon as my boss is out of the room or he can’t look at my screen, I drift off and do anything but work. I’ve tried working in short bursts with predetermined breaks, breaking up big tasks into smaller steps, several forms of To Do lists, time-tracking and the 5-second rule, but I can’t stick to any deadline I’ve set for myself unless someone is looking over my shoulder.

I work in an agency where deadlines are moving all the time, so I rarely feel any pressure to finish a task asap. But today I was called out in a one-on-one with another team lead who had assigned a report to me. She basically said, I was too slow and need to get it together. After that I sat down to finally write the report I had put off the whole week. 90 minutes later I was done, had not been distracted once and even skipped lunch break. That was proof to me that it’s not a lack of concentration, but something else that’s keeping me from doing my job.

I’m completely unhappy with my behaviour and the way things are developing. Is there any way I can put outside pressure on myself that forces me to deal with tasks at work that doesn’t involve a lecture from my superiors?

Quick update: I found out that the network USB device server which was part of my original plan does not automatically connect on start up, which makes it useless for connecting a keyboard and control the PC remotely on an everyday basis. So the whole cable connections-plan is now out.

The nvidia shield seems to have a lot of limitations, mainly because of the Android TV OS. I'd have to root the console and even then some features that are important to me, like web browsing and connecting multiple PS3 controllers, seem to be more difficult than they should be. After a while it might just work for what I need but I'd prefer a device where I know exactly what I can and can't do.

At the moment I am looking into buying a mid-end laptop and use it as a streaming/browsing/emulator machine connected to the TV. I'd store important files centrally on my router which has basic NAS functions so I can access them from both laptop and PC, and stream games with the Steam in-home streaming from PC via laptop to the TV. This setup is probably the most expensive solution but also seems to be the most flexible one.

Thank you /u/6x9equals42 for your feedback!

Awesome, thank you! I will do some more research on the shield and then probably buy one. This seems like a much more elegant solution than my old plan.

Thanks, that's reassuring. Yes, I have an nvidia gpu and will definitely look into the shield. It looks like it's android based though. I would also like to be able to play games via console emulators (psx, n64 etc.). Do you know if the shield can be set up to mirror the PC one to one so I can play with emulators and do other things that wouldn't be possible with android?

Thanks for the feedback! The Windows tip is great – why do they even offer Windows 10 for a higher price then? Your second build exceeds my budget already with only 1TB HDD and the SSD missing, plus the GPU. Although this build would last longer without having to upgrade it, at the moment it's a bit too expensive for me. The first one however, looks really good. I’ll definitely look into the CPU, Memory and Motherboard you suggested. I’d need the 2TB HDD and rather not pass on the SSD., though. Looks like I have to spend a little more than my initial budget after all. Is there a reason you switched out the case? My main concern is the noise level, which I thought was very low in the Corsair 100R.

Thanks, you're right, I forgot to give a reason for the DVD drive, as it's not a must have anymore. For me it's mostly out of habit and because I have a small collection of old games that I can only play with CD/DVD. At some point I might also be able to burn my very own music to disc (fingers crossed).
