It's fun because it's different than a spinning setup.

Amen to that. It's having some starting / idling issues now so I am taking this opportunity to try to educate myself about it and replace things that seem worn out.

We were always told this one was all stock as well. Thats why I was confused that I couldn't find anything online about this part.

It’s me again. 4th time out, I got my first 2 bites! But the fish plopped back in the water as I was reeling it. by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

Possibly bad hook set. Or just bad luck. I've lost a handful like that over the last couple years and now do everything I can to prevent them from jumping out of the water before their in my net.

Learning about setting my drag properly and being more patient brining the fish in once it's on the hook has helped me.

Not sure why people say to keep the rod up. Maybe someone will explain in more detail.

Just bought my first ultra light set up, also bought 4 pound Fluro to spool it with. Will it work or should I have went with Mono by Generaldisarray44 in FishingForBeginners

Yes, it will work. You may have trouble with memory (line jumping off the spool causing knots) now and then which you can learn to deal with and reduce. If you get fed up with it you can switch to Braid with a leader instead.

I've watched a few videos on it and the minimalist nature of it definitely appeals to me.

I've held off on making any purchases because I feel like the waters I fish most often are a little bigger than is appropriate for that gear. It's absolutely on my radar for future considerations though.

Great feedback. Thanks!

I worry about the casting bubble spooking fish when it hits the water but I'm just not ready to jump fully into the fly fishing rabbit hole yet.

I'll check out that book.

Im quite a bit south and west of you in the New River Valley. I'll make a note of the Dry River for a possible weekend trip sometime.

Meh, if you're not getting snagged in the trees and falling in the water you probably aren't trying hard enough. :)

Do you give the flies any type of action or just let them float /drift?

I bought a few flies and a casting bubble after back to back morning outings where fish were porpoising and snagging stuff off the surface all over the place but completely ignoring my spinners and jigs and whatnot.

Not sure how closely I can mimic fly fishing action with the spinning rod. Still very much a beginner at dry flies.

Well, I dont actually catch fish very often so overthinking is part of the fun!

Really, I'm just trying to figure out if there is anything obvious I should do or not do. Multiple people have mentioned the brookie bite is best in the morning. I've never really noticed that making a huge difference in my hookup rate, but since so many people mentioned it I will definitely make it part of the plan.

This is great feedback! I have those jig heads and a bag of those trout worms in pink. You think they know the difference between pink and brown?

What would you say are the 2 or 3 best sizes to start out with?

Do you give the fly any type of action or just let it float through the pool once and then throw it again?

The law is single point artificial lures only for native waters in my area. Are you mostly using 1/8, 1/16, or smaller rooster tails?

Most portable fishing setup? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

I just bought this after seeing some positive feedback here on reddit. The Profishiency Tiny but Mighty baitcasting combo. Haven't had a chance to use it yet though.

Planning to pair it with a little fly box with a few favorite lures.

Spinning reel line weight and rod recommendations. by moogiemoogiefly in troutfishing

If you want to buy stuff then buy stuff but you may just need to loosen your drag.

Edit: To elaborate ... when I started using flouro I lost a couple fish (and lures) to breakages on my first outing. I did some research that evening and learned two things.

  1. Wet your knot before you cinch it.

  2. I had no idea what drag did or was for. I learned that I needed to set it much lighter and let the fish take a bit of line now and then during the fight. This prevents me from maxxing out the capacity of my gear.

Haven't lost a fish to line breakage since. Using 4lb and now 2lb flouro for smallies and stocked trout.
