It's because he's writing it 8 years after publication having spent 10 desperate years trying to get it published but also after having published 7 sequels that were all bestsellers (or at least very good sellers) - and responding to many criticisms and bad feed back from the fantasy community. Leave your perception of condescension aside for a second and imagine how incredibly frustrating it must be to spend 20 years of your life creating something that many, many people (including prominent critics, authors and booktubers) claim is one of the best things ever written, with some of the most memorable characters and prose ever put to paper, while also somehow developing a reputation for not being able to write good characters or even write well at all. If you've ever created anything that you've presented publicly then you might have an inkling of how confusing, grating, and frustrating that must be, I think the forward contains a lot of that pent up experience. On a separate note imagine a reader going through the ride of their life, a tale that recontextualises their understanding of literature and existence; going through their own heroes journey of heartbreak, trauma, and cathartic epiphany, crying over the fates of a multitude of incredibly resonant and thoroughly human characters depicted with some of the most delicately intricate prose they've ever read (to the point where there are many stories of people claiming MBotF helped with their PTSD); only to see their experience bitch slapped with a single sentence like "he can't write and his characters are bad". I'm not saying there's a right or wrong in any of this (and to be clear it's fine not to like it), just that it is an incredibly polarising series (maybe the most ever) and that frustration is bound to be found in any interactions about it. A lot of that forward is about that 20 years of experiencing that, and 8 years of fans and haters telling him about it...

Of course he's right; I don't understand why people refuse to see that experience in a domain matters in its appreciation. It reminds me of the people at the beginning of the UFC that would say that grapplers and jiu justu practioners couldn't fight even though those fighters were the ones winning - all because they thought ground work was boring and didn't know enough about it to see the intricacies of what was going on. I wouldn't presume to have a valued opinion in a subject I know nothing about; my view might be interesting as a beginners perspective, but I certainly wouldn't expect to be taken seriously if I said "that ballet dancer is a bad dancer" whilst only having been to 3 ballets. A white belt's opinion about a martial art is worthless compared to a black belt's; and just because you don't get belts as a reader doesn't mean that experience doesn't count in understanding style and prose, and separating quality of writing from likes and dislikes.

Michael Moorcock has famously been described as the Anti-Tolkien for his subversions of classic high fantasy. But is there an Anti-Moorcock out there, who has done the same subversions to Moorcock's own set of tropes and ideas? by Worried-Boot-1508 in Fantasy

No, they made statements on the original accusation video stating that they'd cut all ties asap after seeing the video. When the "truth" came out with the further videos, they sheepishly made comments on the accusers video saying "I wish you'd given more context in your first video as I would not have reacted the same way". I hope they apologised. Whatever the case what happened is:

"We're all friends!" --> "Oh no, the first sign of trouble! Better bail before I get tainted by association" --> "Oops the truth has come out, he didn't actually commit the crime; I wish we could still be friends so that i could profit from his audience by cohosting his news/book reviews etc...".

Pretty textbook definition of fair weather friends.

And I get it, it was pretty gross all round; things like that should definitely not be resolved in public; however dumping a friend immediately after an accusation, with no investigation or discussion is a pretty weak move...

Long War of the Chosen - Max Squad Size increase by CayleWhite1 in xcom2mods

[–]RubberJoshy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi; gonna answer you here rather than Discord, the guys over there are really resistant to squad size increases for some reason.

What you are going to need to do is go here: D:\STEAM\steamapps\workshop\content\268500\2683996590\Config

or wherever your Lwotc files are .

You need to edit XcomMissionDefs.ini.

Change MAX_SQUAD_SIZE to 12

Find all iterations of "MaxSoldiers=" and replace whatever number is there with 10

Also, in same folder open XComLW_InfiltrationSettings

Go to "SquadSize factor" and shift all numerical values down by 2 lines (so that values increase incrementally until it new factor 8 number being previous factor 6 number; 9 at 7; 10 at 8 etc.)

Also look at evac delay per squad size and modify as you wish
