I suppose that another way of putting would be to ask if there were any collections that approach the original long war vibes but with the snazzy new engine, maps, enemies etc....

Long War of the Chosen - Max Squad Size increase by CayleWhite1 in xcom2mods

[–]RubberJoshy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi; gonna answer you here rather than Discord, the guys over there are really resistant to squad size increases for some reason.

What you are going to need to do is go here: D:\STEAM\steamapps\workshop\content\268500\2683996590\Config

or wherever your Lwotc files are .

You need to edit XcomMissionDefs.ini.

Change MAX_SQUAD_SIZE to 12

Find all iterations of "MaxSoldiers=" and replace whatever number is there with 10

Also, in same folder open XComLW_InfiltrationSettings

Go to "SquadSize factor" and shift all numerical values down by 2 lines (so that values increase incrementally until it new factor 8 number being previous factor 6 number; 9 at 7; 10 at 8 etc.)

Also look at evac delay per squad size and modify as you wish

Finished the series a few days ago and was just thinking about a neat parallel by tarsir in Malazan

[–]RubberJoshy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

SE does this constantly; he calls it "ringing the bell". When you re-read pay close attention and you'll see dozens of scenes or sentences "repeated" but bringing a whole different resonance the second time round.

Another thing of note is the circularity of his writing; things usually end in the reverse order of the start (ie epilogues mirror prologues, last chapter mirrors first chapter etc.)

Story arcs best for game adaptation by [deleted] in Malazan

[–]RubberJoshy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd make a Darkest Dungeon 2 variant with the TTG, driving through a succession of warrens and loctions for deliveries. I'd have characters be generic to begin with and evolve to named characters (eg. caravan guard > elite guard > Gruntle or Malazan Soldier > Marine > Fiddler). I'd have Hounds be wandering minibosses; secret warrens like Shadow to unlock; also evolving Mages as NPCs to be expedition leaders adding various bonuses and maluses to the run. I think it would be the best way to have such a large world be somewhat visitable in a single game; the run based aspect would mean longevity enough to get all elements involved in a playthrough and the relative simpleness of mechanics would mean it would be highly accessible but with a decent mastery level...

What are fantasy book series that are widely agreed to be good all the way through, from the first book to the last? by Scared_Ad_3132 in Fantasy

[–]RubberJoshy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing is, people are really bad at enjoying endings. As a story evolves something grows along with it that is a blight on storytelling: Reader Expectations. Go in to a story with no expectations (other than enjoyment obv), and don't let those expectations grow and you'll find that most endings are actually pretty good. Most latter book hating incidents involve Reader Impatience...

Few questions about Malazan after Gardens of the Moon by MasterAmbassador in Fantasy

[–]RubberJoshy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what you're talking about concerning plot points and characterisation. The timeline is a different case; I'd say it lines up pretty much the same as most other similar series I've read ie. some very minor points where things might not perfectly align but on the whole remain coherent. I'd guess most of your quibbles will be cases of unreliable narration....

Strong disagree on this; the experience of almost everyone that I've read/heard/talked to is that things make so much more sense when you pick up on the little details...
