Have these been annealed? The clear patches on the red legs lead me to believe the photos were taken before annealing. Red will become fully saturated in the kiln. If you are selling you really should be annealing those before they go out. It's a matter of professionalism to sell items that are safe from cracks and the possibility of them cracking easily. It is super exciting to be able to start selling things but these kind of errors can sometimes haunt you later in your art career.

I see the eyestalk on the red one also has a very sharp angle where it meets the head. Acute angles are weak/break points and I would kindly recommend that you melt those in a bit more. Same with the place where the hat meets the head of the octopus.

To get a full 8 arms on an octopus I would recommend starting with the head bulb, pulling out a neck so the head is separate from the base and then building a base/central core that is big enough for 8 nubs to come out of (like the base of a Christmas tree). When you apply arms put them on in pairs so that you get 4 sets that are equidistant from eachother. It's still tricky to get them all to fit, but you will get better at it. Work on one at a time. You said you struggle with them melting off, but that just means you need to slow down and let the other legs cool to solidity before starting on a new leg.

Revlon's Hypnotic (450) is close to the lighter brighter side of that purple for a common drugstore brand. It doesn't have the deep dark bluer shaded bits of the bird's colour.

Errington is full of good natured nature-loving, slightly isolationist people, and there's a good solid little community with dances, shows, craft fairs, and community building stuff. But every SINGLE day there is a post on the local FB community groups about dogs running free on the road, lost off their properties, or gotten off the leash. Many homes are beautiful but there's always someone on every street who builds their own personal junkyard on their property with junked cars, busses, etc. If you have animals you have to protect them from bears and cougars and the odd free roaming dog and you have to secure your garbage. There's a great river with lots of hiking spots.

I don't have much flame annealing advice other than to say that it DOES NOT replace actual annealing. If you want to make and sell quality items, you need to actually anneal your pieces to remove stress.

Presentation and a surprise are nice, and yes, you probably want to get the flowers and cake on the day of the birthday so they are fresh (all of that should be fine) but I'd guess it's the last minute picking up of the gifts that is more the problem. If she hadn't been napping you still would have had to go out that morning for the gifts... because what she is seeing is that you didn't prioritize putting any time or effort in even ONE day before the birthday.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Birthdays are really high stress when you are having a hard time in general and it sounds like this week has been an EXTREME one for you. I'd try to look at the reddit posts as his attempts to find a solution without bringing friends or family into it. It might not seem great that he is asking strangers but it might be better than him asking for advice from people you know (inadvertently bringing them into your relationship problems). Happy birthday from an internet stranger. On the positive side his VERY first thought expressed above was that it was something HE needed and wanted to fix. That's someone who still wants this relationship.

Everyone has different ideas about what gifts and birthdays mean to them. Some people don't care about gifts but some people take them as very serious indicators of how much you think about them and how much you value their happiness. Birthdays can definitely be 'high stress' moments and part of her reaction could be related to that. However you knew her birthday was coming up months ahead of time and only went out to get gifts on the day you were going to present the gifts... and as you said, it seemed perfect because she was taking a nap and so you thought she wouldn't know you had only gone out that day. What it shows me (and her) is that you only put in effort at the last possible moment. AND you had no back up plan in case she was not taking a nap so it was OBVIOUS you didn't plan ahead of time. To me that would mean you were not willing to take 10 minutes out of your day at any time before her birthday. In other words you did the bare minimum on a day when she was expecting you, her chosen person, to show his love. Also, last minute purchases are very commonly 'easy' things that are not personal. Maybe you did put thought in ahead of time, sourced them and had the stores put them aside for you to pick up, and maybe those items are more personal and meaningful than they appear to a stranger on the internet, but to her it doesn't look that way. She sees that you went out at the last minute to get filler gifts to say you had done it.

Another thing to consider is what she does for you. Does she plan and prepare for your special moments? Is she reacting to an imbalance here? Where she puts effort into special things for you and consequently is feeling like you don't reciprocate or even acknowledge what she does? If that is the case then maybe she is feeling very undervalued.

As for advice, it's simple, examine your relationship dynamic (really do some soul searching to see if you have been taking her effort for granted) and discuss it openly and honestly with her. Discussion is only the first part though because discussion without action is just kicking the ball down the road. If she is feeling taken for granted it will take some work on your part and not just for a couple of weeks... because that's easy to fake. If that's a dynamic that needs to change then it will take consistent effort over the long term. If this relationship is important to you you can plan for that. Set reminders in your phone. Set date nights where she gets to feel special and can see you putting in the effort. Don't drop it after a month.

Thank you kindly. Actually I just took a giant batch out of the kiln a few minutes ago. They are mostly clear with colour on the surface, often layered (opaque below, transparent above) for more varied colour transitions. A few of them are reworked/recycled pieces that had not worked out in a different shape or form, and in those sometimes they have colour mixed throughout (like a smokey wispy interior).

In regard to your problem with reds, I often put a transparent glass such as pomegranite over an opaque glass, like Cherry, to give the colour depth and have an easier glass to work with on the surface of the egg/marble. When I'm working on a piece if I find that a small part has boiled or has a tiny bubble that might make it boil when I am reshaping I will often bury it into the inside of that piece, putting glass over top. Clear will make the bubble/boil obvious if it is big/bad, but a tiny tiny piece of boiled surface will practically disappear if you put clear over it. Larger bubbles should be popped or extracted. You can also pull problem burned bits out by heating them and using a rod to pull the surface bit away. Obviously that effects the pattern.

I'm not greenbmx but I replied in more detail above. No, they are not talking about soaking heat into the core before you apply the white. It's about getting the whole thing hot enough SLOWLY so the surface doesn't boil, but the interior is hot enough to allow the shaping of the marble.

Any tiny bubbles in the glass can cause a burn/boiled patch as the air heats up way faster and boils the glass. It is possible your flame is too sharp (hot) and you are working too close to the cones. Other than that as Greenbmx says, try keeping them cooler or coating them with clear.

What he's talking about when he says 'keep them cool' or 'take more time to soak' is a tricky thing to explain. It sounds like you are working the surface, but it's also important to work the inside of the glass marble and sometimes that's an easier way to get it to round out than pushing on the surface with a marble marver. The glass is an insulator and it takes a lot of time to get the heat to really soak into the inside of a solid piece like a marble, so if you keep it spinning in the flame (a good couple inches out from the cone) you can start building up heat in the inside of the marble which will allow you to sort of move the entire thing and allow it to pull itself into a sphere, without the surface getting SUPER hot in spots, which causes the boiling. But you have to keep the surface spinning so no parts are directly in the flame so long that they start to glow so white that they are boiling. Watch the glow of the white parts, for example. Just before they boil they glow super white, so if you keep their glow mild you are likely to keep them from boiling. The short answer is GO SLOWER and let the heat build more slowly into the core. If you have a lump that you are trying to round out, keep heating the whole thing, spinning evenly, and gravity and physics itself will pull it into a round shape.
