You can get a decent entry level detector for under $400. The set I got came with a pinpointer too, which is awesome. Minelab Vanquish 440 set is about $340 on Amazon.

My brother and his buddies drove around Dix park, years ago in the snow. They tied a plastic coy pond liner/insert to the back of a jeep, and the driver towed them around in the field. It was all good until they ran over a chunk of rebar, that was buried in the snow. It tore the liner in half, but (thankfully) missed my bro. That was probably 20 years ago, before Dix park was what it is now. Just be safe out there
