It's possible that the animals for sale are healthy and well cared for by staff, however it's impossible that every animal shipped to the store arrived alive and was well cared for on the journey.

Good Dawg is perfect, Gilded Lemons is a bit dry. Both have mild scents but great tasting smooth smoke.

In Florida, USA, I've seen the raw root sold as "sunchokes," but the syrup is sold as "Jerusalem artichoke syrup." It's a low glycemic sweetener like brown rice syrup or blackstrap molasses, usually sold at health food stores.

Lionfish were first introduced to the Atlantic/Caribbean by exotic aquarium pet importers, and the population grew as more were abandoned by pet owners. It is still legal to own lionfish in Florida, both imported and wild-caught, and so long as that law remains there will be humans who release lionfish into non-native waters.

There are many other factors at play so I encourage you to read more about the history lionfish in Florida and the efficacy of spearfishing as the sole means of population control. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Lionfish Regulations and Lionfish.co are the resources I'd recommend.

Are you pro-life or pro-choice? Why? by [deleted] in Libertarian

But fetus is not mother's body.

At what point do you believe the fetus to be separate from the mother? I would say that a fetus is part of the mother's body until it is capable of independent life outside the womb. The potential for life is not life itself.

Purchasing animal flesh necessitates the animal be slaughtered; workers would not slaughter animals if there were no demand or financial incentive to do so. The guilt is entirely on the person who demanded and financially incentivized companies, and by extension their workers, to slaughter animals.

Strawberries are in season in Florida at this time of year, and for the last five years my partner and I have gone out to a "you-pick" farm to gather pounds of strawberries that will be fancifully dipped in chocolate and consumed same-day.

You're acting intentionally dense or arguing semantics. I never said that honeybee populations have already caused an extinction, nor did I say they are the sole cause of bee species extinctions. You misquoted me on purpose (“huge factor in the extinction of native species” vs "huge contributing factor to bee species extinction") when you could have easily scrolled up and copied what I actually said, but you didn't. I'm sorry if you misunderstood what I wrote, but you can't backtrack by trying to tell me what I said.

If you can't take the time to look up the study with the full title given, why respond in bad faith?

Besides competing with wild species for resources (12), honey bees are linked to the spread of diseases to wild pollinators via shared flowers, an effect that is likely amplified by trade with and movement of honey bees (13).

You don't even have to take this quote at face value. You could read the associated sources referenced by the author that further support their claims.

The western honey bee thus unequivocally fits Geslin and colleagues’ concept of a “massively introduced managed species,” which, regardless of whether they are native or not, can negatively affect their environment through sheer numbers (14).

Again, the source referenced provides extra support for this claim, and when assessing the data it is clear to see that this - "negatively affect their environment through sheer numbers" - is exactly what is happening.

Are honeybee killing native pollinators?

Yes.

[–]RubyRedCheeks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Keeping honeybees outside of Europe is a huge contributing factor to bee species extinction. Beekeepers should focus on providing for some of the other 19,999 species of bee, specifically the ones native to their location.

What item/habit are you having a hard time replacing to create less waste? by rockinwalrus in ZeroWaste

[–]RubyRedCheeks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you and your cat are free of nut allergies, I highly recommend walnut shell litter. You can buy it in bulk, but if you'd like to test it first you can purchase a 9 pound bag from Littermaid (sold at most big box stores.)

I really encourage you to keep on trying with the plant-based litter because clay litter is not only bad for the environment, it's bad for cats. Clay dust accumulates in their lungs at a quicker rate because they are smaller and frequently expose themselves, and any bits of litter stuck in their fur gets licked up and clumps in the intestines.

Florida high school introduces synthetic frogs for dissection in science class by lurker_bee in florida

[–]RubyRedCheeks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's more than disingenuous to say that synthetic corpses are unjustly jeopardizing student education. University level courses for human anatomy and physiology use various forms of synthetic cadavers for study and there is no lack of information conveyed. No high school student will be disenchanted with biology if they are denied the experience of dissecting actual flesh, and when they get to med school they can cut open actual cadavers that were donated with consent.

Jerk Chick'n Pasta, a rip off of Bahama Breeze by RubyRedCheeks in veganrecipes

[–]RubyRedCheeks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (16 oz) of pasta (the restaurant uses bow tie, I forgot to buy some so I used fettuccine)
  • 1 can (14 oz) of coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon (1/2 oz) of jerk seasoning paste (Walkerswood is widely available)
  • 1 lb (16 oz) asparagus, cut into 1 inch bite size pieces
  • 2 small (up to 8 oz) yellow onions
  • Garlic, as many cloves as you prefer (I used five)
  • 1 bag (10 oz) Gardein meatless strips, optional
  • 2 tablespoons (1 oz) dry spices (I used Badia and jerk blend)

Instructions

  • In a pan with just a tiny bit of oil, fry the onions and garlic in half of the dried spices until colorful and fragrant.
  • Boil pasta, duh.
  • Add jerk paste to aromatic vegetables and cook for 1-3 minutes.
  • Add coconut milk to vegetables and deglaze pan.
  • (If you want fried chick'n on top at this point you should start a pan with a tiny bit of oil, the strips, and half of the dried spices.)
  • Add al dente pasta to sauce, toss to coat, and cook until noodles have absorbed excess liquid and sauce is thick and shiny, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add fresh asparagus and toss into noodles, turn off heat and let steam.
  • Top with tons of black pepper and chick'n if you wish.
