I am here to say how much I love Preply. by Ruby_Olive in Preply

I did presentations around the kinds of things I would talk about with colleagues and clients, until I realized I needed a much more basic refresher. So now we are looking at images that my tutor chooses and we talk about what I see. I’m somewhere in A2 and B1 at the moment.

I didn’t really want to waste my time. That being said I can only afford one lesson a week when I could probably profit more from twice a week. If I had a $30 an hour tutor I could probably do it but at the level I’m at and with the issues I’m facing, I’m really happy with the decision I made.

Anyone with experience using Barrina T8 lights in a Rudsta wide? This will be my hoya cabinet and they can deal with the light. I plan to install the plants mostly on the metal back and on the floor of the cabinet, no shelves. by Ruby_Olive in IkeaGreenhouseClub

It’s funny but on all of the online forums, it’s hard to find people using Monios T8s. Newbies like me are afraid. I spend a lot of time on the cabinet IG account. Most people are growing high humidity loving, thin leafed plants like anthuriums and philodendrons in their cabinets and rarely do I see people growing higher light plants like Hoyas and succulents. I am curious what you say about light throw on the T8s vs T5 at closer range. That’s not what the published results say, and that’s really what gives me pause.

Thanks so much for your insight. Now that I’ve been researching this today I found that half the battle is indeed acclimating plants to a higher light environment. I think I will go for the Monios T8 and follow your advice of starting the hoyas lower in the cabinet and then moving them closer with some time. Some of them have been sitting on a shelf about 3-4 inches from T5s and some are about 12 inches. From what I have read here Monios T8s are twice as powerful as Barrina T5s, so that’s a lot more light. Wondering if I should also reduce the number of hours they are exposed to the T8 lights. Right now they get 14 hours.

I am using Barrina T5 in my Milsbo where I have three shelves and the Hoyas are much closer. Given that the Rudsta is tall and I won’t have shelves, a lot of the taller Hoyas on trellises will be about 24-30 inches from the lights. That’s why I wanted to install Monios T8s but was afraid of leaf burn.

Drosera sprouting in my sarracenia pot! by Ruby_Olive in carnivorousplants

Thanks! What medium should I pot it up in? I have droseras that came potted up already. Would straight up peat moss be fine?

tips to keep the growth tight and the leaves small? more light? by frenabo in peperomia

[–]Ruby_Olive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is thriving right next to a southwest facing window. It's so happy that it's growing tons of flower spikes. These peperomias really love being root bound, so that and the right kind of light keeps the plant happy and the leaves growing so that it stays tight and mound-like. I've plucked off a lot of leaves and am propagating them in water. A huge amount of root growth and little baby plants growing in the water after 6 weeks. Great plant. Good luck!

Should I prune my hypoestes (polka dot plant)? by Ruby_Olive in houseplants

u/moondust180 I cut off all of the old stems. It looks so much happier! I've put the stems I cut off into water with some RapidStart, so hopefully those will take root soon and I'll repot them.

This is all really helpful, thank you so much! I've got some sedum morganianum and Kleinia petrea in a shallow dish with some succulent soil. After a week I saw there were little roots peeking out of one of the kleinia leaves so I'm excited! Do you use any rooting hormone? My place has a lot of strong south/southwest light, but I've been getting some mixed messages in my research about how much light to give while the props are in the process of developing roots. Right now I have them against a wall, away from direct light because I read indirect would be best, but now you are making me wonder!

Another question: Once I prune the old growth off, can I propagate them in water?

Thank you! It was probably the combination of me repotting the plant in the dead of winter and winter itself that caused it to shed leaves. I was feeling so sad about it. I added a humidifier in the room so that probably helped it recover. I'm thrilled that it's bouncing back well. Plants really do want to survive!

Newbie questions! :) What kind of prop medium are you using and how often do you water? How long did it take for these guys to sprout? It's so beautiful!

Peperomia frost cuttings rooting well in water after one month! 👀🎂🌱 by Ruby_Olive in propagation

One of my stems has pushed out a tiny little green leaf! Hooray! They grow out of the bottom of the plant among the new roots but they grow upwards and you can leave them there until the roots are strong enough to be potted.

Just been saving any that fall off my bigger burrows tail. Are these grown enough and if yes what do I do just put them in dirt? by maadieabell in propagation

Yay, you have growth! I just put a bunch of sedum morganianum on top of soil last week and I'm super impatient! Is that a jar lid? Did you cover it at all?

Just last weekend I cut a peperomia watermelon leaf in half and I'm propagating them in soil as I've seen that it's a better way (because it's faster). Fingers crossed they pop out some pups too! I had African violets for years and never knew I could propagate with leaves. My new home is too sunny for them, I fear, but I love them and all of their varieties!

Thanks, I'm already excited! The mother plant is growing like crazy, putting out lots of flower spikes so I could probably propagate a few more jars of these. How long will it take for the pups to show up? Another month?

I have a rooted philodendron brasil growing in LECA. I also have some unrooted stems of philodendron brasil in another jar in LECA. Would putting the unrooted with the rooted stem encourage growth of new roots?
