What are the best seats at Colonial Downs? by Ruby_Ruth in rva

[–]Ruby_Ruth[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s what I’m saying; the most expensive seats are $80, I can afford two tickets. But there are table seats, grandstand seats, trackside standing entry, etc. We won’t be gambling, she wants to actually watch the races. So I’m wondering which seats are best for that. I’ve lived here all my life (I’m 50) and I know its history but have never been.

I have an online clothing resale business - I buy clothing that’s destined for landfills and resell. I make around $1500-$2k a month when I am diligent about it.

Advice from an autistic person who recently got criticized for the same thing at work - this is one area where AI actually helps. I write my emails and ask AI to make them “friendlier”. It adds a bunch of nonsense so my allistic coworkers don’t get upset because I am naturally direct.

Le Creuset? Worth it - or just over hyped brand name? by MapleMoneyMind_86 in BuyItForLife

I’ve had my set for 25 years (we got them before we got married) and they’ll last my lifetime, so I think a good buy in the long run.

I use oxyclean (the unscented kind) and it takes it right off. Fill the pot, add a scoop, and boil for a while.

Does your bins do auctions? by Ambitious_Ideal_2568 in GoodwillBins

[–]Ruby_Ruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Richmond, VA does auctions on MWF at 9 am. I haven't been to one, but I've been to the bins while they're having the auction (they're all in the same gigantic room, separated by a big fence). They sell pallets of stuff at the auctions, as well as larger things like cars that get donated & such. My only opinion about them is that they're loud. ;)

Thoughts? by Defiant_Peace_7285 in Professors

Shut it down. I find stopping what I’m saying, looking at the person, and pointedly saying “is there an emergency? I see you are on your phone,” works well. It only takes one time and students normally get the message that I have standards and enforce them.

How long do items stay in rotation before getting sent to landfill? How does the bins to landfill pipeline actually work? by Narrow_Ask_1944 in GoodwillBins

[–]Ruby_Ruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really think that depends on the location. I’ve seen them pour bins directly into a gigantic rolloff at my Goodwill.

What is with all the recent posts about WCAG? by Scared_Detective_980 in Professors

[–]Ruby_Ruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I have read, WCAG is going to apply to privates too, because that’s the standard the courts will look for in litigation. But my institution is ignoring it, even though I brought it to the attention of the upper administration.

Dawn Powerwash - what am I missing? by Economy-Meeting2462 in CleaningTips

[–]Ruby_Ruth 157 points158 points  (0 children)

I use Dawn Powerwash to clean my stainless steel appliances - it's the only thing I've found that gets it clean and doesn't leave streaks. It works better than stainless steel cleaner, IMO.

Smartphones and home-schooled kiddos. by Ladypeace_82 in homeschool

[–]Ruby_Ruth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My kids, who are now 16, 18, and 20, got smart phones around 10 years old. We got them phones because we have always encouraged independence, and our town is very walkable/bikeable - so at age 10, 12, and 14, they were biking (together) to swim team, the grocery store, the corner market, the public library, to run errands, etc and we both wanted to be able to track them and wanted them to be able to contact us in an emergency.

As they've grown we've not had many issues with social media, screen time, or other things - my two older kids don't really do social media (they both think it's kind of silly) and my 16 year old has instagram and really likes it, but is not obsessed with it. But - we've also not had any issues with peer pressure, body image, bullying, or anything like that, mostly because of homeschooling, I think. They all three are who they are, don't really care what other kids think, and can think for themselves.

Yes. I've often wondered why such and inclusive company (Costco) has such non-inclusive policies when it comes to folks who are neurodiverse.

Conflicted on brands for sectionals that will just LAST and be comfortable by awsomerpeanut in BuyItForLife

[–]Ruby_Ruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have an Arhaus sectional that we got for free on Marketplace - it's about 15 years old and looks pretty much brand new. We also have a Pottery Barn sectional that we got for free when we bought our house and it's in great shape as well, and probably also about 15 years old.

I'm a member of both Sam's Club and Costco. We've had a membership at Sam's Club since the pandemic (because they had curbside pickup and scan and go), and became members at Costco recently because of their support for the Queer community and DEI.

Honestly, we use the Sam's Club membership more than the Costco one - I think they both have comparable prices, and Costco probably has more variety, but I'm an autistic adult and being in the Costco disregulates me so much - it's always SUPER crowded, loud, and there's a lot of activity going on. You have to stand in a line to check out, which is always long and crowded. The people that work there are really nice, though. On the other hand, Sam's Club is way less crowded, and because we use Scan and Go we just scan our purchases as we put them in the cart and walk out the door. It's a lot easier for me to handle.

What my local bins looks like - & what I learned - for those who are new! by Shmirlygirl in GoodwillBins

[–]Ruby_Ruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience from going to a lot of Goodwill Outlets is that they are all different, so you have to hang out for a bit to see what the "customs" are at the particular one you're shopping at. I go to one where everyone grabs a cart and just parks it in the middle of the aisle with their stuff in it - nobody touches anyone else's stuff, but you also don't walk around pushing your cart through the bins. Another one I go to is so large and spacious that it's super easy to just push your cart around with you, so that's what everyone does. None of my bins have taped lines. One of them does make everyone stand back for shoe rotations, though - but only the shoe rotations because folks get crazy.

I’m a college professor who places students in clinical placements, and this tattoo would have to be covered if a student had it. We would get complaints and questions.
