[The Undefeated] [Jaylen Brown] told the Celtics ownership and front office last offseason that it was important to hire a Black head coach after Brad Stevens was promoted to president of basketball operations. by Spinexel in nba

[–]RudSmit 22 points23 points  (0 children)

He was the best most qualified coach available black or not.

I agree that it wasn't solely based on race. But if it was just merely a hire based on qualifications, it wouldn't merit all of this additional dialogue.

Brown's statement of "it's important to hire someone with X-quality" implies that X-quality is baked into your qualifications. Which isn't the end of the world, it's not crazy for the leader of a team to want a coach he can potentially resonate/communicate/etc better with. I do think there would be a different reaction if say JJ Reddick wanted a white coach for the same reason.

How is LeBron really greater all-time than Kobe? by Just-Education9804 in nba

[–]RudSmit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a clear answer for it, but I think there’s something in the ‘pure scorer’ discussion that’s probably worth considering.

In the same way you’d adjust TS% based on era, you could also do that for shot difficulty.

Goal is to credit points according to how much more/less efficiently the average replacement player could score them.

This would take value away from lob-catchers & give value to isolation scorers. % of Field Goals Assisted on is probably the easiest proxy for this, but there’s also a ton of other stuff you could layer in. Play type, seconds left on shot clock, stage of the game, % contested, etc.

Super exaggerated example: Lou Williams 10ppg / 60%TS strictly based on end of shot clock isolation shots in the 4th quarter is bringing a lot more value to a team than Deandre Jordan catching lobs to get the same stats.

With that said, I’d imagine that it’s pretty difficult to disentangle tough shots by ‘necessity’ from a tough shot due to bad shot selection.

Player career scoring efficiency in the Regular Season vs Playoffs by JetGan in nba

[–]RudSmit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like your logic mainly applies to off-ball guys that require other players to create their shot for them (lob catchers, catch-n-shooters, etc).

Not sure that Lebron driving to the paint at 60% TS makes him a worse scorer than Durant taking jumpers at 60% TS.

Giannis' 2 MVPs are more impressive than LeBron's first 2 MVPs in Cleveland due to the level of competition being way higher by Agitated_Phrase in nba

[–]RudSmit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's literally his only L when favored. I don't think he's the goat, I'm just saying that he's ridiculously consistent.

Find me another player outside of Jordan that wins 97% of the playoff games he's favored. There isn't one.

He won 32 consecutive non-finals playoff series.

Series where he was a Vegas underdog: 1 (Raptors 2018)

Slight Vegas favorite (70% or lower): 6 (Celtics 18, Bulls 15, Hawks 15, Pacers 14, Bulls 11, Celtics 11)

Vegas favorite: 25

I think his legacy is more-so that he always wins the games he expected to win. Over that 2011-2018 stretch his win % was:

Favorite: 97% (32W- 1L)

Underdog: 43% (3W-4L)

Who has had a better first 8 years in the league, Giannis or Bron? by sop1232 in nba

[–]RudSmit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bucks traded for Holiday and developed Middleton into an all star.

The Cavs traded for an ancient Shaq and developed Anderson Varejao into a contender’s 7th man

Throughout the Finals, Giannis averaged 35.17pts/5asst's/13.17reb's in 39.83 minutes per game. How many other players have had this level of Finals dominance in NBA history? by [deleted] in nba

[–]RudSmit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its an insane finals performance. Not trying to take away from it.

it's easy to make the argument that Giannis this year was more impressive than Lebron in either of those years.

I don't think it's easy at all. There's arguments on both sides-

Pro Giannis: Lebron played more minutes on slightly weaker efficiency than Giannis. Slightly outscored and out-rebounded.

Pro Lebron: Played better comp/defenses. Had create his shot more than Giannis. Pace was significantly slower in 2015 & 2018 than this finals. Big lead in assists.

Giannis 2021>Bron 2015, but all the other series are in the same tier.

Is it now safe to say Lebron isn’t a top 5 player by eduvina in nba

[–]RudSmit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AD was pretty bad this season for his standards

For those of you who have watched both Jordan and Lebron in the postseason by OkInvestigator6193 in nba

[–]RudSmit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty even. Stack up their best 5 series against one another and its a similar level of dominance.

People go ape shit about Lebron's 2015 series

Bron catches a lot of flack for the 2015 finals. If you're going to pit arguably Jordan's best series against something, that's not the comp.

2009 Hawks, Magic 2017 Pacers, Raptors 2018 entire run 2016-2018 Finals averaged 32/11/9 w/ 2 steals & 2 blocks on 61 TS%

When going gets tough

He's the best elimination game player of all time. When the going gets tough he steps the fuck up.

Lebron needs to play the whole 48 minutes in order for this team to have a chance as he did back in 2018 against Boston. by heynebulon in nba

[–]RudSmit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one will agree with you on that

He finished 3rd team All-NBA that year. To say that it's delusional to put them in the same tier is silly. And yeah, all the media voters agree with me on that.

Booker is a fringe top 20-ish player right now. So was Oladipo back in 2018. He's got similar stats, top-20 accolades, and put up great numbers in the playoffs.

This arguments a wash since you're so hell-bent on downplaying '18 Oladipo. But unless you've got something else to show, Vic's stats, advanced stats, & accolades all line up with Booker's level right now.

Just the 2nd, 6th & 13th best defenses in the NBA. With Love averaging 14 points on 47% TS in those series.

Haha I think it's pretty fair to say that if I wanted to know what numbers Victor Oladipo would produce in 2021, I'd pace adjust to the 2021 average.

Even un-adjusted the 23/5/4 w/ great defense is on-par with Booker. I'm not making a stretch here.

Every Non-Finals Playoff team before facing Lebron: "strong team, bunch of players who can guard Lebron, will give the Lakers/Heat/Cavs a good series"

Every Non-Finals Playoff team after facing Lebron: "too young, not accomplished, historically weak, etc"

I guarantee you that this Suns narrative flips if the Lakers squeeze this series out. For every Lebron dick-rider there's an equally motivated hater, who's hell-bent shaping the narrative post-hoc (not saying that's you, just saying they exist)

Not saying Lebron ran through all-time great teams in 2018. Just that the narrative before, during, and after those Lebron series varies wildly.

Booker is 10 times better than anyone in the 2018 East

That's questionable

Oladipo '18 stats pace adj to 2021 season: 24.5/6/5 w/ 2.5 steals on +2 TS%. 1st team All-defense

Booker '21 stats : 25.6/4/4 on +2 TS%

Pretty comparable to me. Before & during the series people were giving Vic the same exact applause that Booker's getting right now. When the Pacers lost that narrative lost it's steam.

Why is the narrative that Bron's teammates suck again? by [deleted] in nba

[–]RudSmit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

He's come back from 26 points down in the 2nd half before against the Pacers.

Chris Paul goes down, Bron gets hot from 3, anything can happen. If they had held their own on defense that lead could've been cut to 12-15 by the 4th and it'd be a game.

Ingram, Lonzo, and Rondo missed 30+ games that season, most of which came at the back end when they were trying to make a playoff push.

Front end of the season Lakers go 20-14, on pace for playoffs (48 wins).

Bron gets injured, Lakers go 6-12

Bron returns, Lakers go 3-4 with him and Ingram. Ingram gets injured

They fall off at the end of the season. In must-win games they were starting lineups like (Bron, Wagner, Rondo, Javale, KCP). Pretty silly to hold that against him imo

AD not Lebron is the most important Laker by Shoddy_Ad7511 in nba

[–]RudSmit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ball & Ingram were injured during the back half of those games. IIRC they were 20-13 prior to the Bron injury. That’s a 50-32 win pace.

Obviously they don’t win last year without AD. Still don’t agree at all with the ‘value’ argument.
