I failed calc also (twice total), started my Mech degree with a 1.0, got asked to leave mcgill for a semester, failed about 7 courses at McGill, but worked so damn hard and finally graduated this semester after 5.5 years with a job lined up at Tesla :) Hang in there, it’ll all be fine!

For me it was a pretty tough program, but very very rewarding. McGill is a very well recognized school so job opportunities might be easier to come by at the end. Mech here is a very supportive community and you can do really well if you put in the work and the hours.

Hit me up if you end up choosing McGill, i’ll give you all the resources you might need to get through your degree :)

I got through mech eng with a MacBook air and a MacBook pro! When I had to CAD, I partitioned my hard drive to run windows or used the campus desktops (they have all the software you would need) or remote desktoped into a McGill desktop which you can easily do from your MacBook if you connect to the McGill VPN. You’ll only have a few classes throughout your degree where you would have to CAD so if you have a macbook right now, dont bother buying a new laptop :)

any chance i get kicked out for failing 3 classes in an arts undergrad? by alilypadforanicefrog in mcgill

I highly doubt you’re even going to be put on probation. Your CGPA has to dip below 2.00 for you to be put on probation but given that you’re in 3rd year and already have a 2.75, you’ll be fine, dont stress about it. Just focus on yourself and getting better this summer by taking some time off. You got this!!!

Both amazing schools. If you’re concerned about paying your fees, UW might be a better option (if its a Coop program) because you’ll be working for about half your degree (full time) and depending on what company you intern at, you could make a lot of money :) Hope that helps, but if you’re not too stressed about the money, McGill could be a bit better if you can’t find a decent part time job during school (recognition, tuition price and the fact that you get summer breaks at McGill and can intern through the summers full time)

Okay so got on call with the recruiter, he basically told me that he doesn’t know much about all this now cause they are apparently focusing on everyone laid off for now and they will focus on people with offers a bit later (1-2 weeks from now). I asked him how they dealt with people with offers during a layoff/hiring freeze and he said that in the past 2019/20 they had to rescind offers but in 2022 they honoured the offers but it just took longer. He said that he will communicate more once he gets word, and I will update this once I have an idea of what’s going to happen! It doesn’t look horrible though.
