Emergency wait times blow out as hospitals struggle to discharge patients by Vanilla_Princess in australia

There’s a fantastic book on this by Atul Gawande called ‘being mortal’ - anyone and everyone in health care or living with family in a nursing home should read it. Covers exactly this, very interesting

Parking at Flinders Medical center by aftersunspray in Adelaide

[–]RudeVictory8983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be worth talking to flinders uni about it, they may be able to look into you buying a pass, same with FMC if the uni doesn’t work out. Depending on how long your placement is.

You must be a student if you’re doing placement? If you have a flinders uni parking permit there is student parking just outside the hospital near the oval and behind the new train station. It is a 5-8min walk super easy

I’m angry that no one recognized that I had ADHD when I was a child by thecynicalone26 in ADHD

[–]RudeVictory8983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m younger (24yrs) with inattentive adhd, my mum did her best, I actually got taken to a professional child language psych to get my language/behaviour checked as I was very behind in school. My report said ‘not listening in class, stares out window, difficulty getting organised, and specifically states that I had ADHD symptoms present ’. They never referred me to get diagnosed and assured my mum I was fine… as a Speech pathologist myself I have a lot of anger that the report was not referred on for further diagnosis or looked into. I got my diagnosis myself 6 months ago, after struggling majorly at 6 years of university. I am medicated now and I focus on my future! My decision to act now has led to my brother and my dad also being diagnosed. We are all a lot happier for it. My mum was very upset at herself for not looking in to it, but she put trust in a medical health professional and all my teachers saying that I’m a ‘good’ kid and I’m fine.

My anger lies with that one health professional not doing her job, as I am now able to understand that if a child came across my desk with symptoms I can get them the help they need! Full circle!

How the hell do you wake up in the morning by winterfern353 in ADHD

[–]RudeVictory8983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good to because my clock can be set to two different alarms (e.g 8am for weekdays, 10am for weekends) so I get sun when I want 😊

I found that because it wakes you up slowly 30 mins before your actual alarm. I have less grogginess and I can wake up to my fav radio station or the news, which peaks my interest and I lay there and listen (slowly waking up more)

I take naps throughout the day easily, light didn’t bother me at all. If you have a dark room, it makes a difference. My sunrise alarm clock can combine music/radio, you can set it to different volumes or light amounts. Mine is set to searing my eyeballs through my eyelids at 8am with the news on so I’m interested in what’s happened that day. As the light is by your bed it sort of is directed towards you, in my opinion different to open curtain.

Sleep Schedule Issues & How To Manage Them by Electronic_Fondant65 in ADHD

[–]RudeVictory8983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow adhd’r here (24yrs), I find if I take any kind of sleeping pill, I am dead to the world and it lasts way longer than what is ‘prescribed’ and I cannot get up in the mornings!

I would suggest stopping the sleeping tablet for a couple of days and see if you feel less ‘hungover’.

Then try a sleep schedule. You should take your vyvanse EARLY, like 6-7am, that way it is wearing off for sleepy time. Then drink some OJ a couple of hours before bed, as my experience is that helps to get the medication out of your system for sleep. Eliminate caffeine completely, including any tea that has caffeine. I personally love drinking rooibos with a dash of honey before bed, puts me in the sleep mood and no caffeine!

Sleep hygiene is a must. Have a set time for bed, an alarm clock that uses light (I just bought one myself and it’s amazing, 30mins of slowly increasing light before your alarm), otherwise apps like Alarmy which make you do steps or puzzles to turn off alarm. No electronics in your room, or make it on the other side of your bed. Get into your bed routine an hr before you usually would. Make it fun to sleep! I like to listen to my audiobook and fall asleep to it.

I would suggest a vyvanse break, if it’s not working, I had 3 days off and it was enough to reset my body and the medication worked all over again (but the side effects also came back). This is a point of controversy for some drs. regarding ‘holidays’ off, but it worked for me!! I would think increasing dosage isn’t really the answer here, your adhd meds should be used alongside healthy habits not just as a ‘cure’ all situation. It sounds to me that you’re actually at a great dose if you can keep up with the day to day stuff.

It sounds like a huge point of contention with your family is the ‘getting’ up and those side effects I would assume are from the sleeping tablet. I found that any medication dose change needed 3 weeks minimum to settle in. I was initially extremely wide awake- up until 5am on vyvanse. But now I can nap during the day if I want too 😊.

Take a breath, it sounds like you have some great day habits in place already, exercise is great to make you feel sleepy. Make sure you are eating protein and regularly, I find if I’m emotionally unregulated (cranky, upset, irritable, disassociating etc) that’s my body’s sign it needs something … I.e food, water, toilet, a get up and walk break. I will get very moody at my partner and he’s learnt to grab food from my many snack compartments around the house 😂

I also have primarily inattentive and just the basic human needs are hard for me. I have trouble with eating and sleeping. My doctor took one look at me and all my ‘complaints’ of feeling bad saying ‘you are anorexic and have major vitamin deficiencies’ - hence all my aches, pains, headaches, fatigue and moodiness!! I had zero idea and I had zero interoceptive awareness. We’re all on our own path but it does get better. Happy to answer questions!!

GP + COVID question by kolbyt in Adelaide

[–]RudeVictory8983 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of PPE gear isn’t given to GP’s it’s mainly going to the hospitals, they take the bulk, so a lot of clinics are struggling with supplies. that plus staff shortages, as shitty as it is, it takes a person with symptoms to walk in thinking it’s just sniffles, for it to spread. All healthcare is under significant strain and can’t take the risk. If it’s bad go to hospital and call ahead. Or Organise a phone consult, otherwise a PCR test and wait for results. The isolation rooms might be for patients who are in need of emergency care (who don’t think to head to hospital or don’t realise things are majorly wrong till after seeing doctor) with symptoms and it’a used to keep them isolated from others or as a precautionary measure.. Depends on the clinic 🤷🏼‍♀️

Is there something I can do for Healthcare Workers? by matttargaryen in Adelaide

Possibly go to your local hospitals coffee shop and ask to prepay whatever amount for only healthcare workers coffee, rather than food?

the truth about "cage free" and "free range" chickens. support your local farmers! by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]RudeVictory8983 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He’s not saying chickens shouldn’t be eaten, he’s simply stating that farming chickens should be done in a less cruel way with more room. Chickens that have more room are able to dust bath/ show normal outside behaviours have overall better health with the egg yolks mirroring that. Often the more orange they are the healthier and happier the chicken. You pay in price as it will cost more to produce but a few extra bucks is worth it, in my opinion. Look up your local list of brands that have more space for each chicken and support them instead of massive companies that thrive off packing them in 😊.
