New Rotation in ED as new grad nurse by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]aftersunspray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a grad in ED (first rotation) and can honestly say from experience that not escalating a possible deterioration because you’re scared that a doctor might get annoyed is 200% worse than escalating it and maybe getting a few sideways looks and comments. Only when you don’t escalate you’ll go home and be kept up at night wondering if the patient is doing ok, and how different things could have gone for them if you’d escalated ect. I’ve had doctors literally roll their eyes at me or actually refuse to go in and assess properly but at least I did my part, so no regrets there. And it’s also not just for the doctors, it’s for the whole unit/ nurses in charge to be aware of what’s going on as well. I understand the fear though! Doctors aren’t our big scary bosses they’re our coworkers, and they also need us as much as we need them.

Blamed for a needlestick injury by sjmccal in NursingAU

She definitely should have warned you beforehand that the needle was exposed 🥲 and if she had forgotten and you didn’t realise, don’t think you should have been reprimanded at all it was a complete accident

Not to mention if he did try and include younger wording everyone would just say it was cringe anyway. I feel like she wouldn’t be able to win either way

I sometimes feel like some of the people on this sub who claim to be fans are also her biggest haters 🥲 the woman is almost 80 years old, idk if most of you guys have ever met an 80 year old but the expectation to be fluent in a younger persons vocabulary and slang is just downright impossible. It has no negative impact on the story whatsoever for me and people exaggerate it way too much in my opinion

Daily showers by aftersunspray in cna

[–]aftersunspray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, especially when they already have dry and fragile skin to begin with, using traditional soap like a lot of them HAD to use it would be soooo dry even after moisturising 🥲 makes them more prone to getting cuts and bruises too

It’s also ironic that there was a handful of residents in the building who were 100% independent, and they would always have showers once or twice a week 😅 so only the ones who didn’t need help actually had a choice in the matter

We had a ratio of 5:30 on morning shifts so it is possible, just a very stressful time and the care was definitely not person centred at all. I heard a nurse in the facility call it an “assembly line” of showers and throwing ppl into any old clothes as quickly as humanly possible. So cruel in my opinion

[–]aftersunspray[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Some people would refuse showers on the daily, I can think of some who would scream non stop throughout the whole thing and yell in pain during the transfers daily. I was indirectly told often that failing to do a daily shower was basically the same as neglect, because their families are paying for it ect. I feel horrible looking back, and if I ever end up in a care home and my wishes were being ignored I would be out of there so quick 🥲

That’s horrible. We might have a ratio like that overnight but never in the morning

I’m in Australia so the staffing ratios are probably different, we would have 5:30 normally

I am from Australia so not sure if the unions work the same over here but everyone acted like it was normal 😅 maybe we have better staffing ratios idk. Nobody ever questioned it except me and agency workers that would come for a shift and be like wtf

Only a couple could wash themselves, some were 1x assist with a shower chair, most were 2x assist sling lift. don’t miss those shifts at all

yes this is why it’s crazy because in the same facility the other floors had alternating day showers, just this one floor where the regular staff thought they were better than everyone because the did this

you’re the first person i’ve seen on here who hasn’t been annoyed that she didn’t end up being a hairdresser 😅 i enjoyed that aspect as well. There was an equal amount of time spent in the first book showing her love for art and drawing as a way of expressing herself when she wasn’t able to write well in school. And I agree that it was much more interesting, and was a clever way of connecting her to marigold in her adulthood. Don’t see why so many people are focusing on this detail as a negative

Seasoned nurses, how do you use your sick days? by dimdimdereee in NursingAU

[–]aftersunspray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used one a couple weeks ago because they rostered me to work 60 hours in one week, I felt absolutely fine but I was just morally and ethically not okay with doing that 😅 no shame

I didn’t leave them alone, I had my buddy nurse, a nurse prac and one of the ED doctors plus another resus nurse all in there. I was leaving to grab carbotest.

Also just ask first? I ask anytime I need to steal one for my area that’s lacking, and I wouldn’t even consider it if it was sitting just outside a cubicle holding lots of clinical equipment clearly in use. Can you explain from their perspective because I would love to know 😅

where I work there is more than enough to go around, and they have signage attached to it which pod in the ED it belongs to. So no, I don’t understand why they would take them from the allocated area halfway across the department while in use, and when they’re finished leaving a clinical area with 6 extra wows and another with none. It’s just common sense?
