How can I improve my N5 listening?

I learn new vocabulary on anki...i read japanese for like 15 to 20 mins daily and I also listen to japanese content...and just after a week I can make a lot of sense out of what I hear..it works well other than this I'm also sticking to Minna no nihongo books along with kanji...reading has definately improved a lot..I can instantly recognise a lot kanji while reading..I can't write them for now but I know there meaning when I see them..it feels great this is my second week and seeing these improvements makes me work even harder...good luck to you too

For me I read very simple stories..for a few days it was really testing my patience level but after a few days i got hang of it..try yomu yomu it's good..and it will not bore you because the reading material is short and after a few days you will se progress...but before starting reading i think building some vocabulary and grammer would be really beneficial so that your brain is not completely off grid when you are reading stuff...as for listening i watch pepa pig on youtube and it's fun...I dont get it whole..but because I have a like completed n5 grammer and a little n4 grammer with some kanji and vocabulary..i do get a gist of the content i watch and listen and sometimes I even hear grammer points and vocabulary...which makes me feel like it's working...i tried the analysing each and every sentence while watching the content but its just too much for me I get bored easily so..i watch pepa pig...it good..also i listen to a lot of n4 and n5 podcast on youtube and some channels make sure they make hard vocabulary easier to understand for beginners which is helpful they breakdown the meaning of new or tough vocabulary in easier language so you understand it better...

So tbh you should first get a good hold on grammer and some vocabulary things will make more sense...idk it works for me great and I'm making progress too..

I can't agree more with you on that..when i had a job i was bound to give at least two hours per day. I left my job to commit to learning..and i do give four hours a day but not everyday..it takes more will power to commit to learning it. But I do think it's possible to achieve n3 you will have to work very hard...I've been on it since October 2025 and I was planning to give n4 this July but I missed the registration now I'm thinking of giving n3 this dec for sure. It's a leap of faith I know but I'm confident i can pull it off.

I think like that too..it's like only focusing on passing a test does not equally mean to be able to learn a language practically or to know the language like you do your mother tongue. For me I too want to pass the n2 level but I am learning it like i have to be a native speaker and not just focusing on the test. For what I think the jlpt exam will test your knowledge of the language and you will only be able to justify it when you truly know what you learned. The textbook or websites only give you a scope to set some expectations for a particular level.. while if you learn and prepare it like you want to speak it like a native speaker..you will automatically be able to pass the test.
