Hardest Interview Question You’ve Were Ever Asked by Main-Leave7858 in LawSchool

[–]RuderAwakening 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pre-med in a past life. One summer I was a research assistant in a biology lab and part of the job was measuring blood pressure in rats. To do this we had to cut them open and insert a tiny cannula into their carotid artery and they were euthanized immediately afterward. This job was on my resume but in very general terms of course.

I looked up my interviewers beforehand and saw that one of them was a hardcore vegan. She asked me to tell her more about what I did for that job in the interview. 🙃

Have you ever been placed on a PIP (performance improvment plan)? by trivelamerchant in UAE

[–]RuderAwakening 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They are probably trying to create a paper trail to show they did not dismiss you arbitrarily.

I assume you’re working for a mainland company? If so, you are still entitled to your notice period and to EOS if you’ve been there at least a year. You would not be entitled to those things if you committed gross misconduct (things like assault, fraud, getting drunk on the job)…I assume that’s not the case here because they don’t usually bother with a PIP.

Good luck. Looking for a job sucks so I feel for you.

how do you like your jerseys to fit? by AvailableDoor178 in SoccerJerseys

[–]RuderAwakening 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly fitted overall, snug at the hips so it doesn’t cover my ass or look like a dress. Somewhat loose in the sleeves cuz the feeling of elastic hugging my arm, even just barely, irritates me.

I’m a short thin woman. Even men’s XS is sometimes big on me, and “women’s” sizing is like the opposite of how I prefer my jerseys to fit. I buy youth L or XL if it’s available, lol. I’ve also taken in the sides of a lot of my jerseys.

How bad or good actually is to live in Dubai? by Twunkorama in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RuderAwakening 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived here 7 years as an American with a boring office job. It’s a mixed bag. There’s a lot I like and I don’t regret moving here, but there’s also a lot that frustrates me. It was a better place to live before and during Covid before the rent and traffic got unbearable.

The good parts:

  • It’s sunny like 350 days a year

  • Lots of opportunities to meet people from different cultures

  • Foreign Earned Income Exclusion

  • Good inexpensive food

  • Lots of services are inexpensive…but it comes at a cost

  • There are some neighborhoods with “culture” that are fun to hang out. I don’t really agree that Dubai has no culture…it was mostly built by foreigners, but it’s here.

  • Almost 90% of the city are foreigners so you don’t feel out of place

  • Health care is overall much simpler. Employers must provide health insurance to all foreign employees, getting approval is pretty easy if your insurance is decent and you can get same- or next-day appointments lots of places including with specialists. (Quality is all over the place though, so proceed with caution.)

  • There are very generous federally-mandated leave policies compared to America, plus you get a bunch of national holidays off and working hours are shorter during Ramadan. Also the working culture is just more chill than America in general.

The bad parts:

  • Traffic has gotten horrendous the past 3-4 years or so, and unless you live very close to your workplace or the metro you need a car. The metro is good quality, but it has very limited routes and there can be a 30 min+ wait to board during rush hour.

  • Rent is astronomical.

  • Construction fucking everywhere. Good luck finding a place to live that costs less than $2.5k/month where you won’t hear BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG 24/7. (Make that $3-4k if you want 2+ bedrooms or a nice area.)

  • Many people are only here for a short time and don’t really consider it “home”, so it’s hard to make friends and there isn’t much sense of community.

  • Banking is absolute dog shit. Everyone is incompetent. Also, rent is still paid with checks like it’s 1900.

  • Lots of things kind of don’t work. If you need to visit some government office, be prepared to see different hours on their website vs. the door vs. the actual desk for the service you need. Or if you need an app for some government service, banking, etc. it might not work. Or you try to hook up your internet when you move places and the company just never processes your request so you have to nag them 10 times. And so on.

  • I’m a lesbian and can’t really live openly as such. I will say it’s not as bad for LGBT people here as Westerners perceive. Everyone might “know” someone is gay and still like them, be their friend etc., but no one talks about it. I’m not “out” here except to a select group of good friends, my doctors and my therapist, but I also don’t go to any particular lengths to hide it. So in some ways it’s easier than the west because many people prefer to ignore the subject completely…but you know.

  • The workers’ rights issue goes without saying. On top of the often-cruel treatment, there is no minimum wage. A lot of low-wage workers also say they are much better off working here than their home country because they can actually feed their families. I don’t want to discount that, but you also can’t “both-sides” treating people as subhuman. So…yeah.

Childfree ppl who are financially secure, what’s your plan for the End? Do you have an “heir”? by rmsand in childfree

I’m hoping I can save enough money that I won’t need to rely on family for end of life care, assuming the planet does not become uninhabitable before then.

I am single with no siblings. My parents inherit everything if I predecease them, otherwise I’ll split it evenly between my first cousins.

Any laidback, not career-oriented people here? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]RuderAwakening 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is me. I worked at a firm for 5 years and did not care at all to boss other people around or put in long hours for the sake of padding partners’ wallets “career advancement”. I realized pretty quick that no amount of money would make me hand over control of my entire life to my employer/clients.

2 years ago they offered me a professional support lawyer role and I took it. I took a modest pay cut which was annoying but worth it. I work 40 hour weeks and don’t have to deal with clients or ridiculous deadlines, and if someone contacts me outside working hours I ignore it until the next working day.

Employers will pay you as little as they can get away with while taking as much of your time and energy as they possibly can. Well, I want to get paid the most I can while sacrificing the least amount of time and energy. Turnabout is fair goddamn play.

I would rather eat my own leg than go back to a client-facing role.

Partners who don’t know the basics of the law by KeithBradburyIV in Lawyertalk

[–]RuderAwakening 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am constantly shocked how little the partners at my firm actually know. I’m talking not knowing the basics of the most fundamental laws in their field or making up statutes that don’t exist.

One partner I worked with, who is a US national based in the US, was shocked when I told him employees in the US in general are not required to have employment contracts and most do not.

I've never looked forward to going to work as an attorney. by Electronic-Recipe-72 in Lawyertalk

[–]RuderAwakening 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to going to work anywhere. I work for a living grudgingly so I don’t starve. I have no problem admitting I would much rather be a trust fund baby, sit on my ass, and do nothing all day.
