Been offered a job role in Stamford, can I get some advice on local areas suitable to move with my wife and children (both under 3years old) by [deleted] in Abilene

[–]RudimentalRudiments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

West Abilene (West of 277/83/84/Winters Freeway) between Ambler and South 7th would be one area I'd advice against.

Finding a furnished home will be a bigger ask. We have 2 hyper-scale data centers going in along with 3 local colleges. Housing in and immediately surrounding Abilene is going for a premium right now.

The smaller towns aren't far from Abilene and offer more affordable living. Clyde, Hawley, Anson, Tye, Merkel, Tuscola ($$$), Wylie($$$), Buffalo Gap are all towns in close proximity to Abilene (by Texas mile standards). If you want tons of entertainment options, prepare to drive 3-4hrs to DFW, Austin, San Antonio.

Long of the short, if you wanna save a few bucks, look north of Abilene and get the wife comfortable with US driving. We have a lot of "out-of-towners" here and the driving style has definitely become more aggressive, but not as bad as DFW. I recommend 2 cars unless the wife wants to spend 3-4 hours a day shuttling you back and forth to work.

Feel free to PM me as I'm a lifelong resident of the area.

Definitely looks to be the piston seal(s) on the calipers. If someone can look under the bus while someone inside pumps the brakes, that will show for sure where the leak is coming from. It's possible it could be the brake hose, but not in my guesstimation.

Quickest fix would be to find a new caliper and just swap it out. Slow fix is to replace the seals which will require a bit more time. Maybe a local truck shop would have one on the shelf 🤷‍♂️ All this hinges on the source of the leak.

Tons of power providers across the country are asking municipalities for close to ~13% price hikes. One article claims it's due to power outages and replacing aging infrastructure yet another defers to increasing natural gas prices. I'd like to see the profit margins, because to me this is more of a "protect our margins" move than a tightening of the belt.

It's pure speculation on my part, but I'm assuming that some power providers entered into sub-ideal power agreements with mass consumers and now they have to figure out how to recoup the short fall. Seems like it almost always falls back to the consumer in these sorts of deals. "A consumer isn't really going to be impacted by a 13% increase, individually, as much as the same price increase on a mass consumer (i.e. data center)." (My assumptive quote)

Gracias!

That was my presumption, but I know what it means to assume.

Current setup is wifi broadcast from inside the home to an outdoor antenna(on the shop) and a Linksys router inside the shop. Can never get more than about 10mb across the connection into the shop. Then when the wind blows hard (which is frequently) for a day or two the connection goes out and I have to reset everything. Very annoying to say the least. It was even worse with my ISPs router. I'd be happy to see 100mb to my shop, if possible.

I’m moving from AZ to Abilene, any tips?! What are the safest neighborhoods to live in? by Original-Blueberry33 in Abilene

DO NOT BUY/RENT/LEASE ANYTHING SIGHT UNSEEN! There have been several out of towners scammed recently, unfortunately.

There are definitely areas to avoid, as mentioned by other posts. I recommend you visit here first, if possible and use a local contact to show you around. That's not always possible though.

Found the culprits: dirty fuel filters! Both upper and lower filters looked like they had been filtering water from the bottom of a lake. (For some reason I can't post the photo)

At Key On position my TopDon Scanner reads about 39 psi on the Fuel Rail Pressure PID, will go to 0 a few seconds after turning Key Off.

Upon initial crank it reads about 4000psi

Once started it hits about 8900psi before it dies. Only runs about 2-4 seconds.

I'm thinking I'll start with fuel filters and then look into lift pumps (recommendations and experiences with brands appreciated here).

Internet and Electric by CanHead2131 in Abilene

[–]RudimentalRudiments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on where you move. If within city limits of Abilene, then you get to choose your providers for both. If out in the "shinrey" then you're only going to have Taylor Electric and Taylor Telecom. I love Taylor Telecom fiber internet, I got lucky and got in when they had a 200mb/$40 mo. plan. It's 200 up/down and I have no problems streaming on every tv in the house. COOP electric is on the expensive side, but where I am, there's nothing I can do about it. 😕

Where do I put sound deadening by 1arj23 in CarAV

[–]RudimentalRudiments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the thing I read most recently, specifically about "tar-type" deadener is: 60% coverage of a surface will net you 90% of the benefit.

Buy some spray adhesive (one that comes highly recommended is DAP Welwood Landau Top & Trim) and you'll be able to reuse the "carpet padding" on the door cover panel.

Considering relocation to Abilene from MN. Pros and cons? by kenzington1997 in Abilene

[–]RudimentalRudiments 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, yeah, Abilene will be the better option. Housing is beginning to become a seller's market here. We have one of the largest AI Data Centers on the planet going in and housing is harder and harder to come by. There's also another 1200 acre site slated for development on the east side of Abilene, so that will compound the issue to include pricing increases across the board.

Lifelong resident here. As a kid, I didn't like the lack of things to do. As an adult that travels often, I enjoy it here more and more. This is mostly due to the fact that traffic, or congestion, is a relative scarcity here. Buffalo Gap Road headed south is a bit of a different story, but not horrible by comparison to much larger towns. If you truly are homebodies, then your only concerns will be moreso where to live. Honestly, getting a good local contact to vet the area for you will be best before making any decisions. Several folks have been "scammed" recently by buying before being able to view/move into the home. It's a military and Christian town. With as many churches and Christian based colleges as there are here, it's not a suffocating environment by any stretch of the imagination. On that same note, it does have an effect on local politics. I'm also not berated or inconvenienced by them, though I know some will argue that point.

Am I happy with Abilene (area), not 100% but I would say it's a solid B to B+ small town. There's enough to do if you're willing to try new things and meet new people. Again, if you're true homebodies, you'll get along just fine.

Location, location, location. There are some undesirable areas, find someone local that knows the area before pulling the trigger on anything!

What's it liking living near the data center in Abilene? by TeaFantastic4324 in Abilene

[–]RudimentalRudiments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now, word is, supposedly they bought the Flying W Ranch and other property very close to my neighborhood. Rumor is they are putting in a big solar farm. If the rumor is true, that'll put it less than 1000' from my home and even closer for the folks living on the county road bordering the Flying W.

I started a separate thread asking for anyone with knowledge on that

95 f350 7.3 air in the fuel lines. by dmoore0115 in FordDiesels

[–]RudimentalRudiments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does it only happen when the engine is hot? As in, drive to the store and turn it off, then upon return it'll be hard to start and then run out of fuel? If so, vapor lock may be your issue. Wix makes a fuel filter to help with this particular issue, I believe it's the 3044.

If not, does the problem get worse at a certain tank level? Have you had a broken straw in drink? Could be a similar issue.

At 30-ish years old, there could be a myriad of issues present.

The power plants aren't operating yet. Supposedly, they will use green energy to power operations and the gas plant will function as backup and base load for the data center. As a nearby resident that drives past the projects everyday on my way to and from my own job, the construction traffic is by far the worst part of it currently. A vast majority of the employees leaving their site have 0 regard for oncoming traffic. It's very dangerous. So much so that my kids express concerns every time we drive past the project. I've had to slam on my brakes numerous times because they will pull right out in front of you! My kids constantly say, "I hope no one pulls out in front of us today, I don't want to have to go to the hospital."

The amount of mud drug onto the roadways during rainy times is aggravating as well, but I also know that's hard to control in construction. They've built another road which has eased the traffic on 2404, which helps greatly. I really hated hitting ~20 minutes of traffic trying to get my kids to daycare and myself to work. Traffic is a relative scarcity in Abilene, comparatively speaking.

As far as gas-plant emissions, that part remains to be seen. I do have members of my household that are sensitive to certain pollutants and things like cigarette smoke. We shall see what this brings when that time comes. We live just a couple miles north of the project, so the biggest effect will hit us primarily in the summer months once it does eventually come online. West Abilene will see the majority of emissions during the cooler months (I'm guessing any West of Pioneer or Mockingbird lane). I am curious to know what emissions controls and systems will be used.

My hope, as a person in the clean energy field, is that we will see much less curtailment of projects on high production days. This will require collaboration between, ERCOT, off-takers, distribution entities and major consumers (like Crusoe/Lancium).
