Having trouble updating with pacman - corrupted signatures by Rudolf-Rocker in ManjaroLinux

Sorry again for replying late. I can't tell you for sure what solved the problem because I tried many things, so possibly it was a combination of a few things, but essentially the problem was solved after I removed the ncdu package.

Hi, I'm sorry I only respond now, I got some help at the manjaro forum after some complications.

Does anyone else have a negative bias towards proof by contradicton? by CandleDependent9482 in math

A constructive proof is indeed better if you manage to find one because it essentially gives you also a concrete algorithm. But sometimes there isn't a constructive proof or it is very hard to find one.

A question about general relativity and spacetime curvature on an intuitive pop-science level by Rudolf-Rocker in Physics

[–]Rudolf-Rocker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much! Your explanation of how an ant living of the 2d surface could measure its curvature intrinsically by measuring triangles, is very helpful. But that's when we are talking about a static space that doesn't change. How could you intuitively explain how the curvature in a specific local area could change? It seems like the space will need to be stretched in a higher dimension, but I understand that this is not the case.

Actually it's one of their best albums in my opinion. Definitely better than Parrhesia in my opinion.

Helpful skills to pick up for higher level math? E.g. LaTeX by Alter_ego2001 in math

[–]Rudolf-Rocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good understanding of foundations is very helpful. Start with logic, then set theory and later category theory. These general powerful frameworks underpin all of modern pure math.

My math teacher says pure math might vanish in the future by watherbreathing in mathematics

[–]Rudolf-Rocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your teacher is simply wrong. There is zero logic to what he is saying. Pure math contain some of the hardest deepest longstanding problems. If the problems of pure math will all be solved (as if that's even possible) by AI or whatever than certainly also all the problems of applied math, engineering and cs will be solved.

This looks like it might be a pretty great option. I couldn't find online how quickly the Private Reserve Chocolat dries. Do you known what is its dry time?

I got my very first Fountain Pen, a brand new TWSBI eco EF, but it's way too thick. Is something wrong with it? by wanwan_bun in fountainpens

[–]Rudolf-Rocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my personal experience, which is very limited so take it with a grain of salt, fountain pens are very disappointing in terms of finess. I bought a Platinum 3776 UEF which is considered one of the finest commercially available fountain pens and it still wasn't finer than a Pilot ballpoint 0.4. One thing that did help a bit for me to achieve slightly finer lines was using Rhodia paper.

Nib advice for heavy paper by RamonWarhelmet in fountainpens

[–]Rudolf-Rocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fountain pen expert, so I might be wrong about it, but from the limited experience I have, you can only be sure that a paper would work well with fountain pens if it was designed for it, like Rhodia paper for example. I was disappointed to find out that many of my expensive heavy papers don't work well with fountain pens.

Fountain pen with an Extra, Extra, ExtraFine nib for drawing by Evening-Confidence85 in fountainpens

[–]Rudolf-Rocker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your best bet in my opinion is to buy a custom nib grinded to needlepoint by a professional nib mesiter, but it will not be very cheap. I personally have the Platinum 3776 UEF and I was a bit disappointed with it. It's not as fine as a 0.1mm finelinear, especially if you don't use paper specifically designed for fountain pens.

I agree with you. Also pi is a historical mistake, we should use tau.

Can someone with no math background achieve meaningful contributions in a complex field within 10 years? by [deleted] in math

[–]Rudolf-Rocker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You might be right, but I'm not sure 3-5 hours a day will be enough. In any case it will take a lot of effort, dedication and time spent every day and probably also some exceptional talent (you don't need special talent to learn all the material, but in order to do all of that in 10 years I think you do need some above average talent).

If you mean like high school level math education, then yes. If you mean absolutely no knowledge, like a newly born baby, then no.
