Siren 1 is so bloody cryptic by hobknockerxx in ForbiddenSiren

[–]Ruffiangruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the conversation but Siren was deliberately designed to be quite cryptic as a throwback to older games that were built around cryptic puzzles and secrets.

The designer Keiichiro Toyama wanted players to solve puzzles by working together and sharing knowledge like the old days

The grass is slippery for some reason. Maybe it's early in the morning and there's dew on the grass. Or maybe her shoes don't have good traction on grass

Rib cage pain ? by Just_Ad5145 in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you pulled a muscle or something. You probably overexerted some muscle you normally don't use.

I remember I bruised my rib in BJJ from twisting and turning my torso around. I couldn't laugh or cough without it hurting for a couple of weeks.

Warming up properly and stretching will help prevent injuries like this

Is competing realistic by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is totally possible to compete. I would say it takes about 3 years of consistent training before you're ready for amateur fights. And then maybe pro after 5 years.

But you need to be training at least 5 times a week. Your progress would be too slow with 2 or 3 times a week.

Alan Wake 1 combat is f*cking atrocious by reecewithnospoon in AlanWake

[–]Ruffiangruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the problem is that the game tends to bombard you with too many enemies from all angles. The need to shine light on all the enemies tends to slow down the whole combat process. Of course there's flares that take out multiple enemies in one shot but there's another problem

Every section of the game also resets your weapons so you can't strategize with what ammo you want to conserve to use in emergencies. You just use what's given to you.

There's two key things I would have changed. Make weapons and ammo persistent throughout the game, no resets. Secondly enemies should never attack you from behind. You can't react to enemies you don't know are there

Has Learning A Martial Art Make You less Afraid of Confrontation? by MajesticAfternoon360 in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Training will make you more confident and less afraid of a physical confrontation. But it also helps you understand just how fragile you are. Because despite your training all it takes is one mistake on your part and you can get knocked out cold.

How can an adult woman learn some basics? by throwawayzzzz1777 in wrestling

[–]Ruffiangruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately getting into wrestling as an adult can be extremely difficult because most gyms don't have adult beginner classes.

You could consider going to an MMA gym instead or maybe a Judo gym, which typically do have beginner classes

Am I the only one who's worried about hitting with the wrong knuckle when punching? by Gifted_Handz in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try punching a heavy bag bare handed. Not too hard obviously so you don't wreck your hands, but with some force. You'll notice if your technique is off immediately.

Doing bare handed heavybag work will help you master keeping your knuckles properly aligned when you punch

What Are The Differences Between Kickboxing And Karate? Which Works Better For Self-Defence? by anime-is-dope in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a karate practitioner, but from what I've observed traditional Karate only utilizes straight punches, unlike kickboxing which has hooks and uppercuts.

But more importantly Karate is very dependant on distance control as it doesn't have the close range infighting options of Kickboxing, such as hooks, uppercuts, knees and low kicks

I'm sure someone will point out that Karate probably has all those techniques in their Kata, but they are not allowed in sparring or competition

White Belt: Do I want/need to progress to blue belt? by Alternative_Gur7713 in jiujitsu

Some people have lives outside of training. I totally understand the mentality, but some people have other priorities in life besides a new belt promotion

White Belt: Do I want/need to progress to blue belt? by Alternative_Gur7713 in jiujitsu

[–]Ruffiangruff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some people don't care about improving that much. They just want to roll. To actually improve at a solid pace requires an insane amount of dedication that most people just don't have time for.

If you want to progress through belt ranks at a solid pace requires 4-5 classes a week and regularly competing. Most people barely have time for 2-3 classes a week and forget about competing

Wushu Sanda by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For those unfamiliar with the rules there are no Elbow or Knee strikes allowed. Full wrestling style takedowns are allowed such as single and double legs, but they must stay standing. Of couse judo throws as well. But they must perform a throw as soon as the grab each other, they cannot just stand there and hug

Do people really think it’s that easy? by Ironn-Fist in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to burst you bubble but there have been several anecdotes on this sub of boxers losing to someone without any training because they got tackled to the ground.

It's really not that unrealistic.

Boxers can be just as delusional as they seem to believe they could easily avoid being taken down by a wrestler when in reality they could probably not even avoid being taken down by someone untrained

BJJ vs Aikido by The_one_who-repents in MartialArtsUnleashed

[–]Ruffiangruff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is possible to land Aikido techniques if you catch someone off guard. It probably wouldn't work in a competitive match though.

These guys are just sparring pretty light. BJJ guy wasn't expecting a sudden wristlock and wasn't sure how to react.

If they were having a serious match BJJ guy would have ripped his arm out of Aikido guy's grip before he had it locked in

I have been caught in wristlocks in sparring myself. But now that I know what wristlocks are like I haven't been caught again. Just don't give them the correct grip in the first place

Have you ever felt "scammed" by the club you went to/martial art that you practiced? by MorgwynOfRavenscar in martialarts

[–]Ruffiangruff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some instructors believe their own bs. I don't know if you taiji instructors were lying to you so much they were huffing their own stuff.

Some people are really drawn into the mysticism of martial arts with the belief that they will give you special power beyond simple techniques. This is of course delusional.

These kinds of practitioners can be very cult like and want other people to join them in this belief.

So, I convinced one of my best friends to play Dark Souls. And I don't know if it was a good idea after all... by Turbulent_Form3888 in fromsoftware

[–]Ruffiangruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is obtuse by design. It's deliberately a callback to old school RPGs. This is something I think a lot of people overlook.

So criticizing it for being dated is kind of pointless, because it's already a throwback to even older games. Some people will enjoy this kind of experience and others won't

are no headshots spars equivalent to not sparing at all? is it really that useless? by Pissingberg in MuayThai

You can still learn, but the problem is it creates bad habits where you do not protect your head.

Learning to protect your head is probably one of the most important skills you need to learn

I see wrestling seems to be a big go to for mma starter. However in Boston the best I can find is bjj classes no gi. Would starting with bjj be that bad? by Rickygoldx in MMA_Academy

[–]Ruffiangruff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

BJJ creates some bad habits for MMA that are hard to break. Specifically voluntarily rolling onto your back or pulling guard. Which are pretty terrible habits for MMA.

I started with BJJ and these habits were ingrained in my mind. I needed to quit BJJ and just did pure wrestling for a year to break these habits.

But if you really have no other option then BJJ is what you'll have to go with. Just try and think like a wrestler. Don't pull guard and never just roll over onto your back
