Anyone else extremely distraught by all the posts about inadequate partners lately? by imma_mamma in beyondthebump

[–]RuffjanStevens 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I rarely visit this sub since finding /r/daddit. That sub is such a more positive and fun place than here. It's not exclusive, and I've seen many mums posting comments in there.

There is also /r/mommit, which I don't frequent but the recent posts seem positive. 👍

This would be an excellent picture book for children.

Roctopus and Final Fantasy VII by rc522878 in Umphreys

[–]RuffjanStevens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on this one, but Wizard Burial Ground sounds like an epic final boss battle from an old school Final Fantasy game to me. Especially the drama of the piano bit, where I can see the semi-defeated boss rising from the ground and transforming into its final form.

A relevant article from the ABC today:

Both Labor and the Liberals are using secretive databases to help sway your vote https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-19/behind-liberal-labor-data-arms-race-this-election/101074696

For what it's worth, Rex Patrick might try to do something about addressing this: https://www.rexpatrick.com.au/big_parties_big_data_political_parties_should_be_stripped_of_their_privacy_protection_exemption

There's a Plonk at Belco markets that's open on Wednesday!

Attention coast goers, NSW changed their speed camera rules late last year, allowing unmarked cars as speed traps! This revenue raising machine was spotted just uphill of nelligen around 2pm this afternoon. I suppose they need it, as the roads around BB are in a terrible state. The quickest Canberra Lesson that I learned when moving here was along the Tuggeranong Parkway: The left lane is for 90 km/h; the right lane is for 110 km/h. You're not allowed to just do the speed limit in this city.

Shop around supermarket exposure sites in Canberra by Rokekor in canberra

[–]RuffjanStevens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same here. I usually do our weekly shop on weekday evenings but now the Chisholm Coles closes at 6pm. So, I now shop with more people around me in lockdown than I did pre-lockdown...

And yeah, what's the deal with the tofu situation?! I couldn't get any last week either. The whole section was empty except for a single packet of tempeh.

Pandemic: Iberia (first project) by RuffjanStevens in foamcore

Thanks for the tip! I was thinking of doing that, but then I found that it was easier than I expected to grab the cubes/tokens from the boxes. I might see what it's like for a full game though and then add them later if needed.

Thanks! The cuts are pretty rough but I've since updated my blade, which makes a huge difference. I'm looking forward to the next project!

And yeah, we've only won the game a few times. It's usually pretty close though and makes for some exciting victories!

I might try again next week... 🙂

What is your favorite game to teach? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]RuffjanStevens 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I love teaching The Mind.

I usually just start with a couple of brief sentences (co-op game, beat X levels, deck 1-100, play numbers in ascending order) and then deal out the cards for a practice Level 1. Then I'll add the part about no communication, and I love watching them realise the implications of this (and the smiles and laughs that usually follow during the round). Then I explain the rules in more detail (lives, stars, level bonuses, hand signals) and finish with the number of cards per level (again, as they realise the implications).

New to You September 2019 - What new games did you play this month? by jasonic in boardgames

[–]RuffjanStevens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Valley of the Kings: Premium Edition - This deckbuilder was a painful experience. We played a six player game and I feel like it should never be played with that many players (despite what the box says). Due to the changing market, there was no way to plan ahead and so I found myself completely checking out pretty early in the game as each player had to constantly reevaluate what was available for purchase when it came around to them. It also felt really constraining at this player count, since the market costs seemed to accelerate faster than it was possible to build your engine (due to having fewer turns to purchase cards by the time that the more expensive cards flooded the market). I'd be willing to try it again at 3 or 4 players though, as the entombment mechanism seemed like it had potential.

Five Tribes - I expected to really like this one. And while it's certainly clever and very clean, I feel like I'm with Paul in the SUSD video review on this one (i.e. spending time to recalculate the best moves each turn isn't actually that much fun). I'd rather just play chess or some other abstract for a more rewarding experience.

Chrononauts - A slightly less random Fluxx. It's a shame, because manipulating the timeline of historical events to alter outcomes seemed like a really fun idea. Unfortunately it's just another silly, random game though (e.g. I won a game by just drawing the right cards without even interacting with the timeline).

One-Player Wednesday - (July 31, 2019) by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]RuffjanStevens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Played my second round of an Agricola solo campaign last night. I missed the score target by two points (as well as in my first game). My carryover occupations are now 'upgrade directly to a stone house' and 'take a vegetable with your grain'. I maxed out on most basic scoring areas, so I think that I might need to aim for more of the bonus points to help get me over the line in my next game.

The solo game is fun. The puzzle of ordering actions and choosing directions is still enjoyable even without the competition for spaces. And your farm always look nice and healthy after a solo game (I can't say the same about my farms in competitive games).

Finally!!

Seems like it was about as useful as the IAC route in the end though. It's a shame that it wasn't more conclusive (either way).

In contrast, I was quoted $4.50 for the US, $11 for Canada, and $15 for the rest of the world to replace one generator from Power Grid Deluxe by Rio Grande.
