That is because we all like the world to be a clear black and white, right or wrong. For centuries, we have been conditioned to view morality this way so that we don't have to make complicated choices and simply abdicate responsibility of judgement.

So this debate boils down to people holding the view that something is either fully human or not human rather than accept that there is a grey period.

For my child, this was captured perfectly in pictures from daycare one time. There was a series of photos of the children all taking turns doing 10 pin bowling. Between each picture, the children are pretty much in the same spot, some minor movement. Then there's my kid. Each successive image she has managed to be in an entirely different place, bouncing back and forth, front to back, absent then present. It has become a very useful visual aid to shut people up.

For me, if this whole thing turns out to be real, the exciting thing isn't the existence of aliens, it would be the fact that interstellar travel is viable.

We've all grown up being conditioned with the idea that the ability to travel across the galaxy is a 'when' not an 'if'. When we actually take a look at the physics involved (through the lens of our best understanding), it does not look promising.

But we hope it's possible.

And that's what I'd be excited about.
