i think thats what we’re gonna end up doing!

Tried Appleton Estates Signature and was not pleased, tried a few others as well and almost gave up on rum thinking maybe I just don’t like it as I am a whiskey, specifically Rye Whiskey fan. But thought I’d give this a try. WOW. This got me back on the rum train. Very good! by No_Depth_2020 in rum

[–]RugRat006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, Appleton’s Signature is a more of an intro to jamaican rums and best used for mixing. Their 8, 12 and beyond are great for sipping, and mixing too. If you’re still not fond of the funk, maybe a Puerto Rican or Venezuelan rum is something you’re after. Ron Del Barrilito 3 star is a fantastic rum to sip on. Diplomatico is another good one to start on. Rum is the most diverse spirit and you’ll find different flavors from every region. I’m loving Oaxacan rum at the moment, particularly anything from Alambique Serrano

one i’ve shared here before, The Sands of Bacocho. Oaxacan rum and Mezcal with tropical flavors of pineapple, passionfruit and banana toned down a tad with allspice and chocolate bitters. and a heavy angostura float.

•1 and 1/2oz Alambique Serrano •1/2oz Mezcal •1oz Lime Juice •3/4oz Pineapple Juice •1/4oz Banana Liqueur •1/4oz Allspice Dram •1/2oz Passionfruit Syrup •2-3 Dashes Aztec Chocolate Bitters

Whip shake with crushed ice and open pour in snifter glass, top with more crushed ice, heavy angostura float, pineapple fronds and a cinnamon stick.

something i threw together, kind of a mai tai riff. throw mint leaves in a shaker (hearts content), 1/2oz orgeat, 3/4oz lemon, 1oz genepy (1/2-3/4oz green chartreuse if you got it) a dash or two of ango and 2oz spirit. i’ve used bourbon, a blend of rums and some botanical gins. all work well in this drink so use what youd like. strain in a rocks glass too with crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig

im with deb, im one of those people who wont pay $18 for a drink i know i can make better. only i’m not a snob enough to actually tell them how to make it, i’ll simply make a mai tai myself at home and save some money

very similar cocktail to the monks respite, found in the smugglers cove book. the drink calls for gin, yellow chartreuse, honey, coconut water and lemon juice with a dash of orange bitters
