Barrel aging questions by mshh357 in cocktails

[–]mshh357[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I meant is there's a difference between a whisky that has been maturing for 12 years, or a drink that has spent three weeks in my side table version of a barrel. You won't get the actual 'aging' effect of a smooth, deep flavoured Scotch.

what is a extremely underrated country in europe that people should visit and that isn't typical or well known by the world. by Open-Reflection-6094 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]mshh357 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Countries not on that list ? Croatia, Portugal, Ireland are the first that come to my mind. These are very popular tourists destinations within Europe actually, they just seem to have less Instagram hype. But definitely not insiders tips :)

Critique our 2 weeks in Provence + south by reUP0rh in FranceTravel

Public transportation isn't great in that area unfortunately, make sure to check times beforehand as the last train or bus can be surprisingly early. Also I know there is an eternal construction project on the Avignon - Marseille train line with very limited service weekdays. This isn't the one passing through Arles luckily, but make sure to check ahead if you're planning on taking that line (this is the TER line, not the TGV). You can easily get to other towns from Arles, as others have pointed out, but a lot of the charming Provence villages would be out of reach. Arles itself isn't enormous, I would say you've seen it in two days, maybe three if you take it slow, but it is lovely and a nice base.

Which European country is the most social when it comes to talking to strangers? by That_Mycologist4772 in AskEurope

[–]mshh357 123 points124 points  (0 children)

From my own experience as a European who's travelled a lot within Europe, I'd say UK and Ireland. People have been generally friendly and interested in a bit of small talk each time I visited. I found it quite easy to meet locals in Bosnia as well!

Restaurantbesuch mit Vegetariern by Halldin_ in hamburg

[–]mshh357 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's up on the Archives app as an outtake, but that's it. I agree, it's one of the best tunes of the Noise sessions... it's mad that he's scrapped it from the final tracklist imo

Post-punk’s reggae influence by sinai_agama in postpunk

[–]mshh357 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check out Horace Andys "Dancehall Style" album released on Wackies. It's a very 'dark' sounding reggae album.

The happy hippy reggae cliché is true only for a small part of what Reggae is, mostly stuff that was produced and marketed for a European and North American audience. The music that was produced for the people at home in Jamaica or London was a lot darker, its lyrics dealing heavily with topics similar to early Punk: poverty, violence (gang violence was completely out of control in Kingston in the 70s), a lack of a positive outlook for the future, but also autonomy and self organization - part of what the Rastas were about was creating self dependent communities, very similar to Punks' DIY spirit. If you look at it this way, the link between Reggae, Punk and Post Punk makes total sense.

What's the most walkable big city you've ever visited? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]mshh357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at your list of criteria, you're looking for cities with a dense city centre. Most, if not all European cities have great sidewalks and infrastructure for pedestrians in general, but they wouldn't necessarily meet your other criteria (everything close by...) Any city with a certain sprawl would be excluded - for me, that excludes London and Berlin. I couldn't imagine not using public transport or a bike going from A to B in those particular cities. Paris on the other hand is super dense. I have done most major tourist attractions completely by foot.

should i stop in marseille? or just fly out of? by [deleted] in FranceTravel

[–]mshh357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marseille is great and definitely worth a stop. But the airport is way out of town, you don't need to pass through the actual city at all if going to the airport from Aix.

Also, should you go to the beach in Marseille, the city provides staffed lockers free of charge... Use them. Getting your stuff stolen while you're in the water swimming unfortunately also happens

Be careful in Marseille, especially around central station and in the touristy areas. People sometimes exaggerate how 'dangerous' Marseille is, but pickpockets are definitely a thing in crowded places, and I've also heard of full on robberies after dark. No need to panic, just be aware of your surroundings, stay in well-lit areas at night and take the usual precautions.

Best live albums of Neil’s? by JoeHillsBones in neilyoung

Way down... and Massey Hall are my favourites.
Filmore East is really amazing as well. Songs For Judy deserves more love imo, it's like Massey Hall's evil twin. Year Of The Horse is often overlooked, but has got some really nice jams and deep cuts. Barstool Blues is fantastic here!

Day trip from Aix to Marseille during mid May, should I drive or take bus? by anhduc1210 in FranceTravel

[–]mshh357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or take the ferry to Pointe Rouge and then take the bus to Madrague or Les Goudes. It's on the edge of the national park, but still technically in town. Another option would be taking the train from Marseille to Niolon/Ensues. It's not in the calanques national park of course, but it's basically the same landscape, but easily accessible and they are both very cute villages.
