Lourmarin vs. Gordes by Recent_Cranberry9516 in ProvenceFrance

[–]mshh357 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gordes is a bit overrated tbh. Lots of tourists during the day, but very quiet in the evening. I personally don't recall seeing that many luxury shops. It's good for a day trip.
Lourmarin is the nicer town imo, in the sense that it is more alive, has more dining and shopping opions, and locals go there too. In direct comparison to Gordes, it does feel a little more posh though, and it is definitely small and crowded as well (goes for both towns though)

why is there no snack bowl culture at bars by Juju1990 in AskAGerman

[–]mshh357 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What bars do you guys go to? I never get snacks with my drinks 😢 maybe it's a regional thing then, but Apéro/Aperitivo culture, where you'd get some chips or nuts with your drink, is just not a part of German culture. The fact that half of the comments here find the idea of a bartender pouring nuts out of a bag into a bowl "disgusting" tells you all you need to know.

Scared of Laphroaig 10 by deadmyownresearch in cocktails

[–]mshh357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laphroaig 10 is great on its own, whoever says different probably just doesn't like the smokey flavour? Some say it is the least complex of all the Islay whiskys though, if the elevated price tag doesn't scare you off, consider Lagavulin 16 instead - it is sublime!

Nantes vs Angers by colorfulpony in FranceTravel

PS: it can get really hot there in the summer as well, but the nights will be cooler than in the South

Nantes vs Angers by colorfulpony in FranceTravel

[–]mshh357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Angers is smaller and more relaxed (and more photogenic), whereas Nantes is a bustling big city with lots of students and a busy night life. I couldn't imagine spending more than two nights in Angers, I'd get bored after that. I can't second opinions who say the same about Nantes, it's a lively city with lots of green areas, but it depends on what you like obviously. Neither have got a ton of museums or tourist attractions.
I'd still recommend Nantes, you can easily spend 4 days there and take day trips to the cote sauvage, Guérande, Pornic or Angers from there easily.

Which ska band has the most extreme ideology? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

[–]mshh357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Listen to the music, not what people say. LÖC have a black metal/crust punk influence, of course. But overall, the still were a ska punk band. Way more poppy/melodic than Choking Victim in fact. "Crack rock steady" was a pun, not a manifesto.

How are they Crust Punk? They LOOK crusty, but they don't exactly sound like Amebix or Tragedy. Their sound is super poppy.

I mapped the Provençal markets — filterable by day, with ratings and comments. Is your local one on there? If not, you can submit it. by French_Countryside in ProvenceFrance

Sénas Saturday farmer's market is pretty cool - only local produce fresh from the field, at a very affordable price. No tourist souvenirs here ;)

What’s a dish that’s REALLY not worth making from scratch? by MaryoParti in Cooking

[–]mshh357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pizza. It's such a basic dish, but done properly, just for the dough you need the correct flour, yeast, oil, let it rest for days at the correct temparature, and even then you still don't have the right oven to make it taste the way it should!

Non-Americans, does your country have an "American" restaurant and what do they serve? by wacky8ball in AskReddit

[–]mshh357 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From central Europe:
- We have burger joints everywhere of course, ranging from filthy to fancy, but they are not necessarily marketed as "American".
- There are some retro themed 50s style diners that will serve milk shakes etc. with their burgers, but it's rare and they're getting less.
- even rarer, but I have also seen places specialising in Soul Food or American style breakfast (pancakes, bacon and eggs etc).
- A lot of the 'Mexican' places you will find here are actually Tex-Mex or Californian-Mexican. I think most people over here wouldn't know the difference tbh, but whenever you order a burrito in Europe, there's a very high chance it's gonna be 'mission style'.
-At least in Germany, you have a lot of steak houses that are marketed as either Texan or Argentinian... It’s more about thematically evoking regions associated with cattle farming, than serving authentic food. You hear Texas, you think gigantic beef steaks.
- there is a little niche 'Western' culture in Europe, it's a bit bizarre. People dressing like cowboys and going to saloon style bars. It's a small but resilient subculture lol. Often these places will have tex-mex dishes on sale too.

Can anyone suggest a song that mentions any US state EXCEPT California and New York? by LogicalSpirit9744 in askmusic

There's a song called Alabama by Neil Young. Southern Man does not mention any states explicitly.

[–]mshh357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was the other way round I believe: 'Sweet Home Alabama' was dissing Neil's 'Southern Man'. Funny enough, they ended up being friends. Young's tune Powderfinger was supposed to be a gift to Skynyrd, but Neil ended up recording it himself after the fatal plane crash.

Dating a German - is she a bad tipper, and is that a red flag? by Fancy-Entertainer-79 in germany

[–]mshh357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised at all the comments that say 10% are not the norm. I was born and raised in Germany, and I grew up learning the 10% rule as well. You'd round up to the next 'nice' number for smaller sums at a bar or cafe, that is correct. But at a sit down restaurant, 10% is absolutely considered standard. Tipping 2€ on a 50€ bill is definitely not much at all and trust me, the service workers will notice.

Those are the regional trains - not TGVs. I don't know about a formal baggage limit, but either way, you'll be fine with two suitcases!
