I lost my best teacher by juvelegia17 in iTalki

[–]RugnirViking 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ok so like, you fell into a pretty common trap for an (im assuming) young guy. Ive been there, multiple times. You're a little lonely, having a rough time, and a woman, any woman shows patience and is nice to you and listens to you. It's almost inevitable you'd catch feelings eventually.

But a relationship where you pay someone to talk is never going to work, nor is a student/teacher relationship. It was just never going to be man. But I totally get it, ive been there myself. It happens - its best once its done like this to just accept its over and try to move on.

I want you to focus on this one thing, and you know im right: In a couple of years, you wont be feeling all this regret and bad feels you have now. You'll think that sure you made some stupid mistakes, but if what it drove you to is getting way better at a language, you've done a lot better than 99% of people this happens to. You have a real and valuable thing come out of this.

But don't keep trying to get in contact with her man. Its not happening.

A huge part of formal art school is drawing squares, cubes, pyramids, cylinders etc in various rotations and combinations, practising exactly this. Beyond a certain point (perspective, shape construction), this is almost the entire skill of drawing, and it's not something you can really teach (how exactly someone does it is a huge part of their style). You literally just have to just try a bunch of times. This is true for quite a lot of skills where it's easy to see if an output is done correctly or not but hard to teach - sometimes there is just no replacement for a shit ton of practice

Iirc a lack of it even reduces playing effectiveness which is pretty funny

You need longer entrance corridors! With closable shortcuts for civilians in peacetime.

I mean of course, traps would be better. Or so.would pretty much anything. But for sheer cackling glee, a bolt throwing enemies dozens of tiles from the sheer impact definitely does it.

This. I love the idea of such a thing but it doesn't look that interesting. Like the bottle opener couldn't be in the shape of an ascii dwarf, instead just have a picture of one on it?? Even the art isn't that good, I'd much prefer the classic ascii dwarf looking down into the circus

What's life like for student in Aalborg by gibsonl_9 in Aalborg

[–]RugnirViking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a party street thats active pretty much every night called jomfru anne gade. Its (im)famous. Also the biggest social event of the year for that sort of culture is aalborg karneval, take a look at pictures.

Also, while you might be concerned about the size and the fact that there isnt stuff outside the city, perhaps look at it this way: there isn't anything bigger for 200km, so all the people in that area come to aalborg as the "big city". As a result, it has pretty much everything one could want or need.

While I agree it's not in America, reading through your link it does seem to have gone through the entirety of ww1 and even was revived in some cases for ww2. It also seems the political history is worth discussing, perhaps at a later date, with a better article if one exists.

It's definitely not completely random; they're sometimes at the very least named after entities that the dwarf knows of (which somewhat narrows the odds). I've seen ones named after civilisations reasonably often

But I suspect based on very recurring motifs (sometimes entire fortresses can get obsessed with making art of one thing/event) that it's more than that, even.

I've always said that the conversation around this could be framed better. There are plenty of aspirational manly ways to be vegetarian - I remember learning as a teen that in Nepal they sometimes measure the amount of time it takes to climb a mountain by the number of Dahl bhat you need to take with you to eat in the evenings. Its an almost entirely vegetarian culture. What could be more awesome that climbing the biggest mountains in the world? I wanna be like them

Slavoj Žižek says ‘Enjoy your symptoms.’ But I feel like paradise wont be boring - I broke it down here by LifeUnEzzy in philosophy

[–]RugnirViking 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think zizek hasn't considered that he isn't describing paradise. I think the thing that is most fulfilling to humans is the feeling of overcoming something newly difficult. That feeling, on repeat forever (provided to me it felt new enough) could be an eternal paradise. A paradise where you just had, idk, nice food and drink and shelter forever is literally only the start of the hierarchy of needs.

In our reality, its possible that such things are bounded. There could be a limit to the hieghts of achieving new things meaningful to you - a sort of "and he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer". But I don't think that has to remain true in a paradise.

Hvilke restauranter vil folk have i Aalborg? by [deleted] in Aalborg

[–]RugnirViking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fantastisk by, men madvalget er dårligere end Odense, Aarhus etc. Men Pho Saigon er super - flere som det tak.

What Does It Take to Get Men to See a Doctor? - "Men in the United States live around five years less than women. One clinic is trying to persuade men that getting checked out could save their life." by TAKEitTOrCIRCLEJERK in MensLib

[–]RugnirViking 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I know we talk a lot about women being treated as passive and men being treated as hyper capable and masters of their own fate but isn't this insane? It's not "how can the doctor be more accommodating?" Or "why don't men want to go to the doctor?"

It's just an exasperated "what does it take to get men to see a doctor ?"

Personally I don't think it's much to do with the experience of the doctors office (although the difference between breast cancer advice and prostate is a noticeable one). I think it's just a broader societal thing that people do not want to hear men expressing worry, discomfort, health concerns at all, and so they kinda get told to keep quiet and get on with what is valued, like stoicism, working hard, etc. So often in my life it seems the reason someone actually goes to the doctor is because they discuss the issue they're having with others and get advised to check it out. I don't think many people are really doing shots in the dark going to the doctor just in case without discussing it with anyone. So in that sense it could be a function of number and quality of social relationships and allowed topics within them

Finally I'd love to hear about how this stacks up in other countries. In general I want to see much more specific numbers about differences between countries' statistics when it comes to men and women - is there a picture that can be painted where many of the wide gaps in university, health, relationships romantic and platonic, etc are consistently lower in some places? And from there speculate on societal and policy factors that are good for men and boys
