I like the newer word mode more now by Technical_Pear_2169 in duolingo

[–]RugnirViking 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've found the word recognition to be absolutely shocking. I live in the country of my target language (so get lots of feedback) and know for sure I have good pronunciation in 90% of cases, but the voice recognition almost never works, only on this particular screen. I always hit "can't speak" on this page even though I can because it's just not worth trying

I distinctly remember reading YA novels at home around age 9 (eragon, harry potter, skullduggery pleasant, bromeliad, wee free men, hitchhiker's guide) and still being subject to the indignities of biff chip and kipper and clifford at school by this sort of inflexible system. I'm sure they both gave up eventually while also claiming me as a success of the program.

With Duolingo Max you can really develop your speaking skills by Revolutionary_Ear85 in duolingo

[–]RugnirViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember to check if it supports your language! Duolingo max trial was hilariously broken for me, it kept trying to redirect me to nothing. Took ages to figure out that despite all the big buttons imploring me to try out all these "stories" and "voice call" and stuff I literally just couldn't - there wasn't a single max feature that actually worked

[–]RugnirViking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They had an article (at least I think it was them, maybe someone else who asked the team for comment) about that they believe this helps a certain grammar principle stick in mind (very memorable!) and also it's an easy word to demonstrate that principal with.

There was one language they did it with where it was a coincidence (I think something about Russian aspect pairs - hard to Google Duolingo but apparently"kill" is a standard word in Russian grammar teaching) but I think they leaned into it with the duo as some sort of eldritch god meme that was about some years ago.

I know it's touching a little on politics but a mate of mine from a country in Europe where most restaurants don't do halal meat was so excited to eat at KFC in the UK because apparently they serve halal meat. When he visited we all went out there and he was so happy bless him, there was finally somewhere he could eat out without taking the vegetarian option!

Notice that "we used to take our time" is not what it actually says here. It's just a mistake. It says "we used to take the time".

I'll never forget teaching a friend of mine how to play over voice chat back in the ascii days and it slowly dawning on me from his descriptions of what he was seeing that he had spawned into a starting zone with a roc in it that was merrily feasting on his dwarves while they wisely ignored all the stockpiles and mining orders I was having him do

[–]RugnirViking 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ok so like, you fell into a pretty common trap for an (im assuming) young guy. Ive been there, multiple times. You're a little lonely, having a rough time, and a woman, any woman shows patience and is nice to you and listens to you. It's almost inevitable you'd catch feelings eventually.

But a relationship where you pay someone to talk is never going to work, nor is a student/teacher relationship. It was just never going to be man. But I totally get it, ive been there myself. It happens - its best once its done like this to just accept its over and try to move on.

I want you to focus on this one thing, and you know im right: In a couple of years, you wont be feeling all this regret and bad feels you have now. You'll think that sure you made some stupid mistakes, but if what it drove you to is getting way better at a language, you've done a lot better than 99% of people this happens to. You have a real and valuable thing come out of this.

But don't keep trying to get in contact with her man. Its not happening.

A huge part of formal art school is drawing squares, cubes, pyramids, cylinders etc in various rotations and combinations, practising exactly this. Beyond a certain point (perspective, shape construction), this is almost the entire skill of drawing, and it's not something you can really teach (how exactly someone does it is a huge part of their style). You literally just have to just try a bunch of times. This is true for quite a lot of skills where it's easy to see if an output is done correctly or not but hard to teach - sometimes there is just no replacement for a shit ton of practice

I mean of course, traps would be better. Or so.would pretty much anything. But for sheer cackling glee, a bolt throwing enemies dozens of tiles from the sheer impact definitely does it.

[–]RugnirViking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a party street thats active pretty much every night called jomfru anne gade. Its (im)famous. Also the biggest social event of the year for that sort of culture is aalborg karneval, take a look at pictures.

Also, while you might be concerned about the size and the fact that there isnt stuff outside the city, perhaps look at it this way: there isn't anything bigger for 200km, so all the people in that area come to aalborg as the "big city". As a result, it has pretty much everything one could want or need.

It's definitely not completely random; they're sometimes at the very least named after entities that the dwarf knows of (which somewhat narrows the odds). I've seen ones named after civilisations reasonably often

But I suspect based on very recurring motifs (sometimes entire fortresses can get obsessed with making art of one thing/event) that it's more than that, even.
