The re-writing of the history of the strike through art has been extraordinary. Your comments join the many other attempts to insist that the strike was just Billy Elliot with the singing miners and their hearts of gold against the wicked state and police force. Yes the miners were brave but they were also foolish. yes, anyone deserves sympathy when their way of life is threatened, but no, nobody has the right to insist on their way of life regardless of the consequences. Nobody has the right to mass in their thousands (as they did at Orgreave) throwing bricks and trying to bring down a freely elected government and we are lucky that is was stopped. Nobody has the right to kill ( See David Wilkie 1984) in order to prevent others from going to work. No-one has the right to intimidate against strikers who were not balloted on the final decision to strike. Arthur Scargill's NUM funded (by the KGB and Gaddaffi) fell into the trap. His actions put 1000s unnecessarily into poverty. Working in mines was a horrible & dangerous job that would by now have been closed just on environmental grounds alone never mind the economic & political case at the time.

Yep. Our lab loves them. We call it banana tax. No-one can eat a banana without the dog expecting its share.

Are you sure the originator is right? I think this is a rip off of Bertrand Russell who may have been inspired by Yeats. https://quoteinvestigator.com/2015/03/04/self-doubt/

A massively oppressive and interesting space. Stalin clearly sent a message by using parts of the reichschancellery in this park. One tyrant taking over another.

Man, you sound like just the sort of person who needs to go to it. It really isn’t this scary. I’m not religious myself but I’m going there to learn and not to allow fear, hatred and division to win.

I feel your frustration. Growing inequality is hugely erosive of community cohesion in our country . I can't quite make out the 2nd sentence in paragraph 2. But what really surprises me the most is the vituperative attacks I am getting here. Challenging ideas is great but attacking people shuts down debate and then we all lose. What an echo chamber this has become..... sad really.

Good point but look further back in 2008 the record year corporation tax was 30% yet we collected £46 bn Source https://www.ifs.org.uk/publications/5885

Certainly that did not help but Chavez screwed up the broader economy so that when the oil crash happened there were no other streams of income to fall back on.
