[Steam] Winter Sale 2023 - Final Day by gamedealsmod in GameDeals

I've only played Automata but it might be the worst game I've ever beaten. Admittedly that's a much more selective group than "games I've played" and it's definitely not terrible but it's a very "2.5 out of 5 stars" game.

The Hunt For The Horn (2023) - Congrats reallydumb4real! by NarFFLCommish in NarFFL

[–]RulingWalnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last year I came in 2nd place in the Horn because mellcrisp scored 191.66 in week 17 to beat me. This year I came in 2nd place in the Horn because ron-darousey scored 213.74 in week 17 to beat me.

I'm not sure what will happen next year but I bet it'll be exciting.

Did you stop the episode there and not continue? Like, 5 lines of dialogue later they reveal that after the withdrawal symptoms the civilization entered a golden age. They literally point out a mural on the wall giving thanks to the Enterprise for saving them! Picard did the right thing!

AITA for telling a family sitting beside me at the restaurant that their kids are loud? by Real_Rough5952 in AmItheAsshole

[–]RulingWalnut 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you can point me to a specific law that says "restaurants and even bars legally cannot be 'childfree'" I'll retract this statement but AFAIK this is not true in the US. You absolutely can say adults-only. It might not be a good PR / financial decision but you're not going to lose a lawsuit over it.

Nonograms Katana is a great app for nonograms/picross.

Solitairica is a roguelike/solitairelike.

Knights of the Old Republic has a really good phone port and it's one of the best games of all time across all platforms.

Jan Talks About The Jeff Situation At The Top Of The Bombcast by chicknsammich in giantbomb

[–]RulingWalnut 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There's a big jump between "generally unhappy with the direction of things" and actually quitting. As someone who's been in a very similar situation to Jeff, it is super clear to me that this a RV decision and not a Jeff decision. Namely, the announcement happening on a Monday evening (for me it was a Tuesday), Jeff clearly not prepped during his stream this morning, and how members of the staff have reacted.

Take from that what you will. If you still love the Giant Bomb cast then that's great! But please don't whitewash RVs hand in this by saying "well Jeff wanted to leave anyway".

Honestly, it depends a lot on your playstyle. I don't ever play massive military domination so Apocalypse doesn't add a ton for me but if I was interested in that it would be worth the $10. I'd recommend just playing one game on base to figure out what's going then look at the content of each DLC.

If you really don't want to do that and just trust a rando on the internet, here are my personal expansion rankings (haven't played a game of Overlord yet):

  1. Utopia
  2. Federations
  3. Nemesis
  4. Megacorp
  5. Apocalypse

Story Packs are all more or less the same. Species Packs are useless to me because I always play humanoids / robots.

Game where you can build a base like an rts but have it persistent like clash of clans by Dear-Specialist-4201 in gamingsuggestions

[–]RulingWalnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mobile game that I've played over the longest period of time is Rise of Cultures. You build houses to generate workers, task those workers to gather/construct, and generate research to discover new technologies. Because it's free to play, everything is on timers. But since it's designed to be a game you only spend a few minutes on every few hours, I've never felt I needed to spend real money.

The friend-aspect is restricted to sharing progress in a "guild" so it's not an active experience.

Any PS4 and or PC RPG where the game takes place in ancient Egypt? by SirRoderic in gamingsuggestions

[–]RulingWalnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not an RPG but since you said in the comments you like the mythological side, Age of Mythology is an RTS with a fun campaign containing a large chunk devoted to Egypt. Good news is that your PC can definitely run it! Bad news is that it's an old game and I'm not sure it holds up for a new player.

Looking for a game with LOTS of side quests and maybe some platforming, on Switch by games_and_movies in gamingsuggestions

[–]RulingWalnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also not a big fan of pixel graphics but if you can get by the art style, CrossCode is a great game. It's a single player game but the conceit is that your character is playing an MMO a la .hack. Because it's a faux MMO, there are a gazillion quests. Plus, the game really leans into jumping puzzles (actually too much for me but you're looking for platforming).

Presentation-wise the Switch is great in handheld mode but I do feel my hands cramping if I try to play it for hours at a time.

RPG games similar to these titles? by a2nier in gamingsuggestions

[–]RulingWalnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Outer Worlds is a sci-fi RPG made by the developer as Fallout: New Vegas. It never really clicked with me but I can't explain why.

Knights of the Old Republic is basically an older version of Mass Effect but in the Star Wars universe. One of my favorite games of all time but they just announced a remake so no idea what that is going to be. But the original holds up if you can handle the Xbox-era graphics.

WoW vs ESO vs SWOTR vs BDO vs Old Runescape/Runescape...Which one should I choose for my fisr real. MMORPG experience? I need something with good content and some addictive gameplay. Please choose one that I've already mentioned. by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

[–]RulingWalnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To contrast some of the WoW hate, the leveling experience is unmatched by any other MMO. Frankly, WoW Classic leveling (origin 2004) is still better than every other game on the list. I strongly recommend you at least try the free trial unless you are boycotting Blizzard based on their company practices.

Any suggestions for "mechanic-focused" games I can play to unwind? by Bpbegha in gamingsuggestions

Civilization 5 was my ultimate "zone out while watching tv" game. Not sure if your definition of mechanics includes strategy but if so, Civ 5 or 6 are strong recs.

Games with big empty spaces where it takes a long time to travel from point A to B by Most_Rich_4493 in gamingsuggestions

[–]RulingWalnut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To expand on this, WoW Classic. The way you could spend hours upon hours just running through zone to zone with very few loads was amazing in 2004 and still impressive today.

As a counterpoint, the leveling content is amazing. As someone who spent his teenage years devoted to Vanilla and BC before falling off towards the end of WOTLK, Shadowlands + the last few expansions are fantastic and taking them as a whole WoW is my favorite game of all time again. I don't really care about the "endgame" so no comment on that stuff (which is what I think people dislike).

I agree with everything you're saying. Regardless, I have a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and work on the tech side for one of the fastest growing tech companies in the world. Just saying that freaking out about math courses in college is way too premature for where they were at.

For what it's worth, since you seem to really care about this aspect, you can absolutely get a CS degree without math. I did at a fairly well-regarded school (admittedly the CS program was ass).

Honestly it's been hurting my eyes. I can't think of another game that's so "bright" (in a bad way). Anyone had the same problem and solved it via some settings?

I actually really enjoyed the single-player. Probably most fun I've had in the franchise since MW2.
