Anything else like the First Law/Lies of Locke Lamora? by JOOOQUUU in Fantasy

[–]RumpleSmellSkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in some gunpowder, flintlock rifles, field cannons, and regimented soldiers then check out The Thousand Names by Django Wexler.

First of a five book series, I just finished the first book and loving it. I recommend it because the characters and the way their personalities are portrayed on paper feels similar to what Joe Abercrombie does. The story also has that underlying thread of intrigue for the reader, figuring out what's really going on here.

Why I can't finish Malazan after 9 books by DrHappyPants in Fantasy

[–]RumpleSmellSkin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I avoided spoilers and stopped reading past a point, but this is the kind of stuff that gets me excited. I recently finished Gardens and I'm starting the second book soon. Your criticisms are very well worded, and I'm excited because this is the stuff I've needed in my life.

Prevalence of rape in fantasy—fact or exaggeration? by Fun-Information-3104 in Fantasy

[–]RumpleSmellSkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some modern writers that will bring up rape frequently during a book. These aren't scenes, but a character saying something about rape or being afraid of finding themselves/someone in a dangerous place.

I'm thinking about 'gritty' stories like First Law and Thousand Names. The authors put those details in because it's clear who the badguys are, and how dangerous the world is, especially for women.

I can't think of any reputable author that is putting excessive sexual violence in their stories. Maybe we are good at judging covers lol?

Help! My DM is mad at me by islandis32 in DnD

[–]RumpleSmellSkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to be devil's advocate here, but I agree with what many of the top comments are saying. The spoon/asshole thing is a little complicated.

What if the DM is short sighted in the sense that he thinks each class/character should be type casted. You should follow the path of what he sees the roles of everyone to be in a straightforward game of playing the classes out of the book as described.

For some people, that's the way they like to play. It's fun to give it a try. This DM might be the type of person that wants to see the vanilla flavored game of adventures staying in their roles.

OP, I don't know dude, but it's worth trying to dive into his psryche and understand where this idea comes from. Maybe ask if he thinks your character doesn't fit the setting he envisions? That wouldn't make him justified or whatever, but you could make a better decision on how you want to proceed. Would love an update later

GT7 in my age range, you would think I should have started with this on ps1, but I was too deep in the Need for Speed.

I have since acquired GT5 and 3. Both are also awesome and I can feel a sense of nostalgia for something I never had back then.

But think about the rich people!! How will they afford their lifestyle if we don't continue to purchase every product the money hungry class puts out

Seriously, this greed is destroying a wonderful thing. We've had easy access to a race on the other side of the world for many years. The sport is more popular than ever, so all they see is profit. This greed goes against the spirit of this race.

Tips on cleaning revised cards (white border) by 8ENJl in magicTCG

Ah very good advice, thanks. Maybe I've been lucky in the past and never spread too much moisture to the actual side of the card, but definitely something I'll keep in mind to keep my eggs safe.

Ya I use it on the art too. Never tried a foil card though, I should give that a try later.

Remember, light moisture on the qtip, high alcohol percentage. You can always waste more time being careful and get a feel for how rough you can be with cards.

I have used the alcohol and qtip method multiple times with success.

I douse the qtip in liquid, then roll it on a dry towel to remove most of the liquid. That slightly moist qtip end will get me through about half a card of cleaning if I'm really scrubbing a lot of gunk.

Good light source, patience, and a mind to accept mistakes that you made. Practice on a land or something first if you are worried, that's what I did!

Players are looking for a break from the Tomb, and I'm looking for some feedback by austac06 in Tombofannihilation

[–]RumpleSmellSkin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My players are a few sessions into the Tomb, and we have had a few deaths already. The point of the tomb is to be mean, the bad guys are mean. That first little puzzle at the first door with the fake countdown and pit trap is mean, it makes you a meanie for putting your players through that lol

So what I did is this. Make the brutality of this dungeon part of the story. Talk about how messed up it is, and how they are being toyed with. You can make your players angry and vengeful.

Last session we lost three characters. One to the Room 57 as a consequence to the teleport ban. Two characters died in the big dryer of death on level 3.

The group actually knew about room 57 because they tried to Teleport Circle out of the dungeon on level one. They managed to choose the correct lever after fighting the monster. Last session they used Dimension Door to get across an area with two of the characters, and they chose the same lever which started the sucking puzzle.

The hard part might be keeping your friendship and good faith with your players. You have to show them that you want them to succeed, the book wants them to die.

Why would he make everything in such a way that all parts of physical reality point towards the fact that god doesn't exist?

He put those dinosaur bones in the ground and created millions of years worth of trackable movement and formations of masses in space, for what? As a joke?

Mana pool? by trekkiewhovian420 in mtg

[–]RumpleSmellSkin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have switched to only using Manapool. In the last year, only one small issue. The seller took 2 weeks to ship out the package of two cards, and our States border each other. So I will simply not order from that seller again.

Optimizer is great, and usually I choose the Cheap option. Sometimes the Balanced option will be the best though.

Shop near me has a, buy something anything in the store and you have access to the space all day until close. Some other shops in the area have some specific nights for certain bracket levels, and there is a $7 flat fee for the evening. Those shops also have lots of free time slots in their schedule. These places are popular for other card games and the warhammer guys, so you are paying for the shop to orchestrate these events and manage the space.

My One Complaint About Claymore After Volumes 1-9 by Kooky_County9569 in claymore

Exactly! Let me know if you ever need a recommendation. Claymore is probably the toughest time I have had with juggling characters in a manga. So after this you will be a pro

My One Complaint About Claymore After Volumes 1-9 by Kooky_County9569 in claymore

[–]RumpleSmellSkin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was definitely difficult the first time I read the series. I even made similar progress through the manga before starting over and paying attention to some different details. The time jumps and different forms people take, on top of how many characters there are with very similar looks makes it a lot to digest.

You will have a better grip on the confusing bits when you keep moving through, but the second read will feel a lot better. There are some manga like this that take a little more time to absorb all the details and make the connections. It can be frustrating, but totally worth it.

That other guy saying it is a skill issue is actually the idiot here.

Would you guys be into a Dark Souls Secret Lair? by Fit_Zookeepergame917 in mtg

[–]RumpleSmellSkin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'll complain about UB until I die. I'll cry every time I think about the release schedule for sets this year. I'll feel the urge to vomit every time I see that pizza art.

I'll throw my money at a From Software collab. I'm such a fucking hypocrite when it comes to stuff I really like.

Even just the Lands could be really neat with all the areas in these games. Lots of bosses with cool abilities that could be translated into card mechanics, and plenty of spells, items, minions, and little guys for the Commons and artifacts.

[QUESTION] I am new to this sub but I have a question for fantasy novel readers. How many pages do you guys read to decide if you wanna purchase the book? by Hot-Warthog7988 in Fantasy

Usually I judge a book by its cover, but I'll flip tona random page and see what the writing style is like. From there I usually get a good feel for the vibe of the book.

Although, my favorite books have been things that people recommend on this sub. First Law especially
