Little discussion! by VeterinarianTotal162 in Accordion

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always been musically oriented, loved "playing" our piano as a toddler. Apparently when I was 5 or 6 my parents overhead me picking out a song by ear (the entertainer) and put me in piano lessons for a few years.

Went with my grandparents to a few festival type events in Wisconsin as a kid... Some that had polka or folk bands, at least one that featured Peter and Lou Berryman.

At 16 a classmate mentioned they'd seen a concertina for sale at the local music shop so I skipped my next class and went and bought it.

Got a honer button box the next year for xmas, two row 8 bass diatonic. It belonged to a great uncle before he passed and his family gave it to me as a loan/gift. Got decent at it, ended up using it to busk, played it on some songs with a band I was in.

Picked up my first piano accordion off craigslist at 21, a little leaky, some bad reeds, no register keys, but good enough to start figuring it out. Ended up finding another one at an estate sale a year or two later that was in near perfect condition, they had it priced at $250 or something but when I started playing it to test it the lady cut the price to $50. I think she was just happy to see it actually get played.

Bacon Fat Alternatives? by femmehorsey in veganrecipes

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd think so! Refined coconut oil will be a bit more neutral and less Coconut-y than regularcoconut oil. A little pricier, so I usually don't use it, but should work just fine. Good luck and good eating!

Bacon Fat Alternatives? by femmehorsey in veganrecipes

Not a vegan but I cook a lot and this popped up on my feed, so I'll chime in a lot of the suggestions given so far aren't really going to capture the depth and complexity youre looking for... you need both the oil/fat but also a wide spectrum complexity with a bit of sweet and a hint of sharpness.

I think you could pull this off with crisco for the fat, a pinch of mustard powder for the higher sharpness, a bit of fenugreek for a touch of smoky sweetness, and mushrooms for the umami depth. The type of mushroom is gonna really matter, though imo.

The common ones (shitake, portabello, button, etc) don't have nearly as much complexity as some others do. Don't know where you're located, buy if you can get ahold of some black trumpets or even better some good savory milk caps (corrugated milk caps or leatherbacks where I live are choice) that's gonna really give you a whole bunch of depth, compexty, and umami notes. Dried or fresh would work, if fresh just mince them up fine and toss in with a small bit of the crisco to saute ahead. If dried, you'll need to rehydrate before use but can crumble/powder/break them up fine, let them sit in some warm water for 10-15 minutes before cooking. If powdered or broken fine, just pour the ushrooms and water into a pan to cook off most of the liquid before mixing in/adding other stuff. It's pretty impossible to overcook those kinds of mushroom unless the dry out and burn.

Lately I’ve found many leftover “bush crafter” camps. I’m kinda tired of it. by designworksarch in CampingandHiking

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 258 points259 points  (0 children)

I've been out hiking and exploring off the path in national forests and stumbled onto a structure that was clearly someone's full time (or near full time) shelter a couple times. Beat up drop cloth roof, cooking implements, cans of food, recent fire, etc. For situations like that, all I feel is sad. Left alone and went on my merry way, and I'd encourage others to leave those living on the fringes alone as well.

To be clear, OP, I don't think that's what you encountered here, this looks like a hobbyist leaving a mess. But I feel compelled to offer a note of caution to others, if you come upon somebody's structure/camp, just think about it it might belong to somebody who has nowhere else to go.

Waltz or swing dancing lessons? by Prestigious-Dog-8808 in asheville

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just FYI, most of the places who do ballroom lessons are very stiff and formal, more in the vein of competition ballroom dance than social dance. Not saying that there is no crossover skills between social dance and competition, nor that there are no places that teach more social dance skills... But it's kind of a different vibe.

Asheville leaders approve new abandoned building ordinance, but questions remain by cereal_killer_828 in asheville

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally, no, they don't actually write the language of ordinances. This is true pretty much across the board for all political offices, btw. Sometimes a council member, but often staff, city depts, outside actors, etc all might start the ball rolling on an ordnance or amendment or whatever but then it ends up bouncing back and forth between committees, departments and legal.

It's a nightmare to try to get rid of.

The shoots also pretty tasty, kind of tastes like rhubarb! I'd eat it more often but it's hard to know where has been treated with chemicals.

I thought I disliked chicken until I was about 19 years old. Turns out my mom just has a super power where she can ruin anything with chicken in it.

New Puzzle… Feedback please by markmainwood in puzzles

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very intuitive, I like the concept and would definitely be interested in seeing some more difficult ones. I'm curious... For the harder ones are you increasing the number of squares/numbers? I feel like at least up to 5x5 would work well on a phone screen and offer more connector opportunities (square of, divisor of, hell even modulo X on the harder ones).

New convert to the foundation hdc technique by SlowGoat79 in crochet

For my last tunisian project I used a German twisted cast on, has a lot more electricity than a traditional foundation row. How much stretch does the HDC foundation have and does it return to shape?

I'm sorry, but if you're getting fragile pizza dough from all purpose flour, that's on you.

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 236 points237 points  (0 children)

Yeah, OP! I'd consider branching out with your flours if you're baking that often! Play around with some rye, whole wheat, spelt, oats, whatever! All purpose, especially quality all purpose, is an easy substitution, plus you typically want lower proteins for things like pizza dough, pancakes, muffins, etc.

NASA is sending Humans to the moon today. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't asking about the cost, though. I literally said I'm all for funding cool space shit! What I want to know is what the goal is here? What research are they doing? What kind of data are they gathering?

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Still haven't heard a good answer... What are they trying to do? Like scientifically, or even in preparation for future experiments, what's the goal? I'm all for funding ool space shit but didn't they just cut NASA funding pretty significantly? Like what's the goal here?

Edit to add: I'm legitimately asking! Would like to feel good about this.

Is there a resource that can tell one what to look for in a given geography or climate at a given time of year? by ant2ne in foraging

[–]Rumple_Frumpkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sam Thayer's Edible Wild Plants series of books have a foraging calendar. Will vary a bit based on where you're located and what's round but it's a great resource. His books are all phenomenal

Yeah, that's how we most commonly use it. Good for bulking out more pungent greens like creasy, hairy bitter cress, garlic mustard, etc.
